《The Island of Vulengate》Forest Fox

“Fox elder magic is often unheard of – and unused because of fox’s humble lives. They prefer not to go down the path as they just need a peaceful life, and they will be happy.”
-Fern, mythical nature scholar
Running thru the grass, I feel it brush against my back. The scents of flowers dancing thru my nostrils. The sun backing my back as I scamper thru the beautiful meadow.
Suddenly, my senses flare as I notice a rabbit scamper off thru the bushes! I speed off after it quickly catching up. As the rabbit scampers into the rabbit hole, I follow her I notice that she has a whole den of baby rabbits. All of them, shivering from fear at the big scarry fox about eat their mommy. I decide to back off.
After getting out of the nest, I decide to join up to Hazel, Mark, and Morthil. They tell me that I should scout ahead to alert us of any enemies ahead of us. They tell me that we are heading north towards the mountains. After scouting – and exploring through the forest for about an hour I stumble upon a wonderful waterfall with water flowing down in a mesmerizing fashion. I hurry back to the party to inform about the waterfall. Al three of them agree that they should stop there to eat lunch.
They are going to get there in about an hour, so I decide to give them a surprise by catching a pheasant or two. After searching for a bit, I find a magnificent bird pecking away at the ground about the size of myself! I crouch and activate invisibility as I get ready to pounce at the bird. I pounce and bite down on its neck causing it a quick death! Yay! I caught my first prey!

Level Up! Congratulations, you have caught your first bird and have gained one level in hunting!
Returning to the waterfall is a breeze and I notice that the party is almost here to I decide to turn on invisibility and hide so that I can surprise them with the bird. Once I turn on invisibility, I crouch and wait as they slowly start setting up camp. Right as Mark is passing next to me, I become visible and surprise him with the bird. He is scared to much that he even screams as if he’s getting ambushed.
Everyone turns their heads towards Mark and laugh in amusement at seeing him so scared. After the notice that it is me who scared him, they notice my big bird and stare while drooling. I laugh and ask if we are going to cook the bird or not. After cooking the bird, we all eat it with delight. It is already evening, so I find a nice place to curl up next to the fire.
Suddenly, a hunting horn sounds, and I’m alerted to a horde of goblins heading our way! I awake the group and we create a plan. I am going to distract the goblins before they reach the camp and take as many out while I’m at it. Hazel, meanwhile, will be shooting arrows at all the goblins from the camp. Morthil, and Mark, however, will flank the goblins and attack from behind.
Putting the plan into action, I activate invisible and sprint down the hill to the goblins. When I’m inside them, I Fox Bite their leader and chaos ensue. When I take physical action against their leader, my invisibility diffuses, and I sprint back around to Mark and Morthil. They congratulate me and then charge in to ensue even more chaos. Hazel, meanwhile, is carefully and effectively taking down the goblins from afar.

After what felt like hours of biting and slashing, the last goblin finally fell dead.

I decided to start investing in the Fox Elder Magic so that I had a means of implicating more magical damage from afar.
Fox Elder Magic Skill Tree:
Invisibility Ward: Removes the invisibility effect of People and Items
Cost: 50 mana per hour Length: Infinite (activated) Strength: can’t be resisted
Lore: The invisibility ward was created when the first Elder was tired of his children ease dropping on him using invisibility
Convinced Surrender: Forces the enemy to surrender (single subject spell recommended to be focused on leader)
Cost: 100 mana Length: until surreders Strength: 45% of resist/level
Lore: Because of Elder Magic’s famous non-harming approach, they created a spell to not harm anybody at all
Mind Control: Puts subject into control of caster. Caster can use the subject to kill his own. (Note: if caster or any friendly forces harm the subject, it breaks free)
Cost: 100 mana Length: 5 hours Strength: 61% of resist/level
Lore: Elder magic makes it so that the user doesn’t kill anything, so his/her karma stays good.
With my choices made, I decided to finally sleep for the few hours remaining until dawn. After a “meh” night’s rest I was ready. The morning air slightly misty with water from the waterfall tagging me every so often, life was a dream. I could go wherever whenever I want to, and I could fit into any hole I dreamed of. But thoughts aside, I had some hunting I needed to do. Today, I felt like catching a rabbit, so I set out.

Catalyst: Avowed
The year is 605, and in your home— the country of Corcaea— the souls of mankind belong to demons. A phenomenon known as the "Catalyst" is what's to blame. This diabolical phenomenon lurks within every man, woman, and child. It can turn any human into a demon, if they fall prey to one, all-consuming element. It can be anything. Fear. Grief. Generosity. Even love. In a land where Gods are real and Corcaea's theocracy is the last hope for mankind, you follow in the footsteps of Father Richard Anscham: a deeply disturbed young priest, the leader of the Church of Mercy, and the foremost researcher of the Catalyst. Despite completing a holy mission from the Goddess of Mercy, obtaining a holy Relic, and escaping from demon-infested ruins, Father Anscham is in greater peril than ever before. Ravaged in mind, body, and soul, the solace he begs to receive from the Church of Flesh is impeded by a cruel lesson: the ramifications of a life spent sacrificing everything one has for others. See through the harrowing eyes of a man at his wit's end; through a dark fantasy tale of horror, hope, and desperation. Search for the cure. Conquer your personal demons. Welcome to Catalyst! As this is an archive of Catalyst Quest (an interactive, collaborative story), the prompts that were included with the original run of Avowed have been stripped, and the story is presented like a traditional novel for your reading convenience. If you would like to read Catalyst in its original format or participate in current events, you can find us here, on Sufficient Velocity. This book is complete! The story will continue with Catalyst: Calunoth, just as soon as I am done revising its content for here on Royal Road.

8 161The Kodoku Game
In Japanese folklore, there once existed an ancient technique among alchemists for harvesting the strongest poison known to man. A poison so vicious, so horrendous, that a single drop could incapacitate an entire nation of humans, several times over. A poison so intense that a single drop could turn the tides of a war on its head. As potent as it appeared however, this poison could be harvested from the blood of a single insect alone- an insect the alchemist’s called the ‘Kodoku’. As lucrative as was attaining this poison however, the problem lied in identifying this insect- its appearance, shape and size changed from region to region and from continent to continent. Sometimes it took the appearance of a ladybug and other times a horned-beetle. In order to determine the identity of this special insect the alchemists came up with an ingenious method. They created an impregnable jar of clay out of the best sandstone they could find and placed hundreds of different insects into the same jar. The jar was made with such great mastery that it allowed no insects to escape and allowed no objects to enter. The laws of nature dictated that the insects would remain together in the jar forever. However, it turned out that as time went on, the insects’ hunger for food and power caused them to turn against each other- one insect ate another until only one remained. This sole insect contained a poison that far surpassed that of all the others and became stronger as it ate more and more insects. The alchemists at this point had succeeded in identifying the Kodoku and could extract it’s poison as long as they continued to feed it regularly. Although this folklore ends here, the actual story does not. One day, as the alchemists cheered in joy of having identified the Kodoku they so eagerly wanted, they forgot to close the lid on the very jar that was considered to be completely impregnable. This small gap was just large enough for the Kodoku inside to crawl out. Famished from not having been fed for weeks, the Kodoku ended up eating the very alchemists that nourished its growth until not even the bones remained. Yet, the Kodoku’s hunger didn’t seem to subside in the slightest. So it traveled to the next village and began eating whatever it could find there. Its poison made it unparalleled in strength and slowly but surely it began to dwindle down the population of the entire city. Yet its hunger only continued to grow. So it traveled to the next city over and ate all it could there. Very soon, the Kodoku couldn’t find any more food to eat. There was no one left to eat and no one left to spectate. So it stood there, by itself pondering what possibly was left to eat that could satiate its hunger. But there was one thing left that Kodoku realized it had never eaten. Itself.
