Class 9B

The four heroes, hmm, entered their allotted class and looked for a comfortable seat. Each seating was much more spacious than what they were used to in the middle schools. Sam sat closer to the window with Maya in front and Jim and Dona to the side. The much exciting classes were about to start.

And soon their class coordinator arrived. To their surprise was an upperclassman. He smiled at the juniors placing his book on the teacher's desk pouring water over their heads.

"Did you expect a tier 6 to come and teach you?" He asked laughing slightly. "Don't be dejected. I too had the same expectations." He opened his book and cast a levitation spell floating the book in front of him.

A mage. A tier 2 mage.

The class died down staring at the floating book. It wasn't much but the person who was casting the spell was just a few years older than them.

"I'm well aware that the spell is just for show. Let's get to it then. First, let's go over the syllabus for the Tier 0 students." He paused eyeing over the crowd. "Looks like there is no one above tier 0." He closed the book and walked in front of the desk.

"I'm Peter. I will be teaching you basic spell structure and how to form them. Since you guys are not yet initialized you won't be able to complete a mana circle. So, these first few weeks will be to check how far your abilities have grown." He climbed over the desk and sat on it.

"I will ask a few questions. Just raise your hand if you can answer it. Ok?" A few in front nodded their heads.

"Let's start." He did a dramatic pause.

"Who all have already learned the basic spell structures. You wouldn't be able to draw it with mana but someone should have taught you the basics at least. Please show your hands." A vast majority of the kids raised their hands leaving behind just two girls at the very back.

"Alright. It's still fine. You two at the back. Do you have a basic spell structure textbook with you?"

The girl stood up straightening her skirt. "I got mine yesterday evening from the library. I tried out a few of them but the sketches were all drawn over."

'Library books?' Sam had a vague idea of what must have happened.

The school receives all students irrespective of their background but that doesn't mean backgrounds doesn't matter. The one's from a quarter family usually are rich and they would always look down on the poor students that came from the weaker families.

To make it harder for those with lower family background and to make sure they won't rise to challenge the wealthy families, the wealthy ones always ruin the opportunities provided for the less lucky. Although the school doesn't allow tampering of its property, they still are a little powerless to prevent the infighting amongst students.

A few faculties are also of the impression that it's good to have a bit of pressure on the kids and those that work through those hardships often become the cream of the crop. This was mostly the reason why the school never interfered.

Besides after a few years of this sanctuary, these kids will be forced out in the open. Even the faculties were afraid of these few rich families as they too had families outside. Don't want to be on the receiving end? Get strong. The motto had worked so far.

"Well try and get a better copy. There is no rush. You can make copies of one of your friend's books. Make sure you catch up quickly or you will be left far behind." After a little advice, he waved his hands for her to sit.

"The basic structures are the fundamentals of what you call mana. How many of you know how to draw the flame spell's basic structure." A few hands suddenly shoot up. "Good, then what is the first thing that one should focus on when drawing it?"

The class suddenly became active. Everyone started shouting out answers that they thought were right.

"Fire core." Someone from the first row.

"Thickness of the borderline," Dona shouted.

"Stable mana output." Someone from the third row.

Many answers started voicing out and the few who didn't even know what was right picked a side after receiving all the options.

"The most important thing to focus on when constructing a fire circle is the required power output." He looked over the students and continued. "Everything else will become second nature to you once you understand the required power behind a spell. Countless gamers have lost their party members due to not understanding this." The class became silent again.

"Every spell has a function. Even the smallest spells could become deadly under the hands of someone with superior mana." If you do not consider the required output before you start working on the spell, your effort will be wasted." Peter jumped off the desk and walked behind it taking a chalk piece in hand.

He held the chalk in his palm and used levitate to lift it. "Most of you should know the levitate spell. Tell me, how many of you can guess the required mana to lift it?"

"10 mana"

"10"

"10 mana"

The answers were uniform this time.

"Are you sure? What about this book then?" He picked up the book and made it float with his other hand.

"10 mana?" There was doubt in the minds of the students.

"Ok, let's see what happens if I use ten mana." Suddenly the book fell off mid floating. "Looks like something was off. What happened?"

There was silence again. Everyone knew it only required 10 mana to activate 'levitate'. 'Peter must have stopped casting levitate.' The kids thought.

"Ok, let me try and explain it slowly." Peter took the book back from the floor and rested it on the hand. "I only need ten mana to activate the levitate spell. You are right. So why did it still fall over?" He held the book in his hand looking through the crowd trying to see if anyone knew the answer.

"Ok, why does the book fall?" He asked, seeing no luck.

"Gravity." Said someone from the middle.

"Yes, gravity. Is what causes it to fall. Well, I will let you guys think over it for today. Let's see if you can figure it out tomorrow." Saying so, Peter started drawing a mana circle on the board. It was irregular and not as nice as the one they had all seen on the text books.

"Well, that should do. This is a tier 0 flame spell. You guys still won't be able to make it work but make sure you take it down. It's the most necessary spell for all jobs. Learn it by heart as soon as you can. Don't forget to think about the book ok." He said taking the book with him as she walked out of the class followed by the bell.
