《Defending Mars》Captives of a Red Planet – 20 – A real prison

Twenty
“Okay, okay,” she told them as they pulled her along painfully. “I’m coming, you don’t have to drag me.”
The two men finally relented, let go and motioned her to walk on ahead of them, Instructing her to go left or right or to climb up a set of stairs when they wanted. Well, where was she going to run? Even though she could visualize the maze so far, getting out would mean going back, not forwards to where she was being put. Tory had yet to cross her path.
And then she was put in a small room, a cell of some kind, this time absolute solitary confinement.
“You stay here,” she was ordered, and then the door was closed in her face and locked.
There wasn’t much to the room. There was a cot against one wall, and a thick window on the opposite wall so caked with dust on the outside she couldn’t even see out of it. There wasn’t much light anyways coming through, so maybe it was dark, night, but she didn’t think so. Perhaps the windows didn’t look out on the outside, but into some other cave chamber, or would have if it wasn’t so caked with orange-red dust.
Tory swore and raged through the room, trying out everything that she wasn’t supposed to say in front of her parent or classmates, either back in the CU or home, The kind of words the team back home would use when they thought she wasn’t listening or didn’t care. But all that didn’t really make her feel better. She wound up lying on the cot and staring up at the cracked ceiling, imagining the cracks represented this place, folded them over in her mind into a three-dimensional maze, and went over all the ways to get out.

She’d always liked mazes for some reason, always. New Angels was a maze really, just a massively big one, and Tory mourned that she would never get the chance to explore even the tiniest bit other than what she had. The outer towers had been the borders, the city itself, rebuild most of the central part had been flooded when the sea came in. Levels and levels, millions of places to sneak around and check out.
And then her life had compressed into a Mars-hard rock of a real prison. As much as Tory had complained about the CU, she’d managed to put herself in a real prison right her, all on her own. Stupid, stupid, stupid!
It was better to think of mazes, trace her steps all the way back to the airlock out. Easy.
Mazes were easy. Locks were harder. Guards with guns had to be worse. And she was being held in a crater millions of kilometers from anywhere.
But now she had an idea why.
“You’re a hostage,” one of the guards had told her. “Your parents give us what we want you get to leave.”
Was she being held for ransom now? How did that make any sense? It wasn’t like her parents were rich or anything like that. The corp had paid for their trip, relocation from Earth to Mars.
How could her parents be so important to some group of Marian terrorists? They were just A.I developers. What were they doing? It had something to do with a big ice field in the northern hemisphere. Utopia Planitia, that’s where it was.
And probably just programming robots here to cut up the ice to make water, oxygen for air to breathe and hydrogen for fuel. Robots who did what they were told, unlike Martians. Martians.
Tory decided that she hated them as much as the people who had brought her to this planet in the first place. But saved her most burning hate for Gurminder. He was the one who had pretended to be her friend, brought her here and left her to rot, he deserved the worst that could be coming to him.

Ancient Bones: The Changed Ones book 1 (Post-Post Apocalypse LitRPG)
Is it truly an RPG Apocalypse... if no one can see the RPG? Generations after the Fall, Mankind has achieved a balance in a world it is no longer the master of. But your prospects in this Malthusian world are limited. Johanna Milton and her friends have an answer: delve into Ancient ruins, avoid Changed beasts and mana pockets, and salvage Ancient materials, collectibles, and trinkets to sell. It pays well if you avoid the perils of the Ancient world. But when they find the skeleton of an Ancient, their lives take a strange turn. Suddenly, Talents straight out of fantasy novels become theirs. While they try to make sense of what happens, eyes turn to them, to the four who seem to break all rules. Or are they merely following them? Because, in the Beyond where he's spent 150 years waiting, one dead Ancient knows the truth. Douglas Moore has played those games often enough when he was alive to make sense of the System that rules the Changed world. He can no longer act on his own, but he has access to the Interface. And four people for which he can bring whatever it takes to face the world. Change is coming. The Changed Ones is a slow-burn litrpg fantasy trilogy (Ancient Bones, Ancient Books, Ancient Bonds) set on Earth, 150 years after the RPG Apocalypse... which mostly failed. It is an homage to the venerable ancient RPGs of the Golden Box era, the Baldur's Gates, and many others, offering adventure where You must gather your party before venturing forth. Keywords: LitRPG, realistic setting, low-leveling, post-post-apocalypse, fantasy earth, slow-burn, secondary POVs, female primary MC, team adventure, worldbuilding. Trigger warnings: casual swearing, adult innuendo (no explicit scenes whatsoever, though). Oh, and potentially a bit of politics. Bonus content: a Litrpg Easter Egg hunt. With lots of eggs across the book, some easy, some hard to find. Current score: 6/20 (20 eggs, 6 found) Publication schedule: on hold until September for book 2.

The Ruins of Magincia
They say all things end in time, but the exalted City of Magi would’ve begged to differ. Yet when an attempted coup goes wrong, the city finds itself brought to the very brink of destruction. In the wake of the calamity that left no survivors, the autonomous infrastructure still operating the ruined city seeks to restore what was lost. Luckily for it, the Mana-devoid Universe it awoke in holds an unexpected surprise: a planet full of sentient life forms. All capable—with a little help—to become the next generation of Magi. Back on Earth, Millie McArthur is a pregnant out-of-work mechanic struggling with the prospect of moving back in with her parents after leaving her unfaithful fiancé. That is until she finds herself just one of the hundreds that have been shanghaied by the callous artificial constructs still manning the ruins of Magincia. Now, she must struggle to learn magic, compete for resources, get good 'grades,' and fulfill the seemingly arbitrary requirements for her future job in this broken city. All while keeping herself, and her son, alive. Is the miracle of magic really enough to make up for all the pain? The Ruins of Magincia is a dark fantasy that's heavy on the drama (LitRPG aspects are very light). Chapter lengths can be anywhere from 7k-12k and there's no current release schedule as I'm focusing on wrapping up volume one.

2nd Floor
Matthias is a struggling writer finally able to move into his first solo apartment. He's thrilled to have a place free of roommates and siblings, even though the building is decrepit and is inhabited by an odd assortment of people including an intrusive neighbor, a little girl who wanders freely, and an overweight orange cat named Cheese. As Matthias settles in things begin getting stranger. Something vile is growing in the dark and it's coming from somewhere on the second floor... where Matthias happens to live.Author's note: this is me trying to get back to my roots: a character driven novella with horror elements. The story of people struggling against an inscrutable enemy, as well as the day to day trials of being poor in America. I have no idea how often I'll update or even exactly how this will all go down because y'girl is a panster. So strap in because this is the first draft and you all get to see it being born!Feel free to comment whatever comes to mind, and helpful critiques are always welcome.
