《Ishtar's smile》Chapter 4: She who comes from the woods

Today I am invited to dinner! A rare and precious event, especially when the host is none other than Enlil himself. Oh, don't think I'm interested in his conversation skills! The lad turns out to be an outstanding cook. He could make the best soup with grass, roots and water. A multi-millennial expertise, it helps. An ancient Atlantean adage says that « the true way to a man's heart is through his stomach », to imagine it different for a woman would be naive, though she admits it less openly.
A long time ago lived a sublime but incredibly modest young lady. The unfortunate woman was drawn into a terrible conflict and what she saw... is beyond anything a human mind should conceive. Her eyes witnessed the unspeakable. Imagine entire countries being ejected into the void of space, six hundred billion victims per minute, a million children committing suicide with smiles on their faces... Despite an education that was supposed to give her enough strength to resist the worst horrors, it got to her. In truth, no one expected it when everything started. The knights thought they were perfectly prepared. In abundance, foolishness.
Towards the end of the war, this moron was shot down in the sky of a hostile world and crashed on its surface, a few hours before it ended up being thrown out of the universe. She was banished in a land that saw her as an enemy. Rather than face her opponents, she disappeared into a forest and slept inside. A thousand-year-old sleep. The embrace was simple, sweet. A peaceful night in company of her best memories. At times, the girl would wake up to eat, then return to her cozy tomb.
Our 'heroine' being blessed with eternal youth, such an escape would eventually cost her her sanity. One morning, the seclusion became unbearable. We all have a limit, including goddesses. So she got up and decided to go wandering, until she met a man locked in another form of exile. It was his own shadow that this guy was running from! In the eyes of this rustic character, she appeared more magnificent than the moon. An inhuman beauty, almost impossible. To the girl, however, the fellow had no appeal... however, he was breathing and talking. A huge advantage for anyone who has known only isolation for ten centuries.

She stayed close, approaching by a meter every week, until she finally stepped into his cabin. The rude brat didn't even make any effort to speak! This poor man never satisfied the least of her needs, yet the young woman was as helpful as the best mate. The bastard's existence was enough for her. He was blunt, difficult, without curiosity or wit, but repelled loneliness. The silly girl offered him two kids! Unfortunately, this dimwit forgot one essential fact about her condition, namely that time has no meaning for an immortal.
As she shut her lids, her husband and his offspring had died of old age! One second, just to rest her eyes, and here she was alone. She cried, then went back to sleep, plagued by the worst nightmares. A blood-red sea spurting from the surface of a burning planet. The horror of an eternity of regrets. Once again, isolation became unacceptable to her, so the girl went on an expedition, discovering a new man. She had babies. All returned to dust in an instant. Sleep again, then solitude. Another man. Children. Dust. Again and again, and again, and again.
Soon they would know her as 'She who comes from the woods', a woman bringing happiness to warriors who had lost their taste for life. Some beautiful omen, a heaven-sent reward. But for her? Only dust. Again and again. After giving birth to the equivalent of a small village, our pal simply falls on the ground, with hope that death will extinguish this inferno in her mind. Did I mention that my story's protagonist is a complete idiot? Because this retard seriously thought she could escape!
Luck often favors fools. A peer found her broken body almost by accident. He had heard legends and was hoping to meet their subject. This wonderful benefactor was a patient man. He searched countries to achieve his goal! Are there still people of such indomitable spirit in your time, mysterious reader? This savior managed to persuade her to return into society, by a miracle that she struggles to explain, and to take a path back to her species. He protected her, discreetly.
