《God's Death》2: Chapter 4 - The Life of Somnus
Advertisement
Somnus was extremely excited to be able to watch such a spectacle. He had intentionally looked for forming overgods in the past by exploring the abyss. It was extremely rare, but not impossible to find. Throughout the countless years of his life, he had found a few.
But he wasn't able to see how they did it. He wasn't able to make heads or tails of the logic behind it. He didn't need to though, he had mastered distortion. His abilities lied in dream, distort, displace.
His law of distortion had put him in a separate league from other gods.
There were things in life that were never born
Universal laws that make up the fabric of reality
Things that have, and will continue to exist perpetually no matter what.
When these things manifest they become original incarnations.
If gods can be seen as the incarnations of laws
Supreme Beings. Overgods can be seen as something on a completely different level.
But even those things are jokes to original incarnations
Nothing but a chip to be eaten
Somnus was a god in the process of becoming an overgod as well.
He had formed a domain
He had formed a true body
He had formed his core abilities for manipulating reality
But he was still a god
If such a thing as a true god existed. If something only a half-step away from overgod was a stage.
Somnus would fit into that category.
There was an issue though
Something that made him very different from Gaia
Somnus came from somewhere
He didn't attain his power from five words
He wasn't Knowledge
While his destiny had become paradoxical
He started off as a mortal
He lived a normal albeit unfortunate life
Gaia had a very different path to power
Somnus's original name was Visdre Mallaichte
He was born in the capital of Scotland
During this period. While it was against the law to body snatch, it wasn't something you were likely to get executed for. There weren't many regulations at all in terms of certificates and qualifications when it came to being a Physician.
Unfortunately, he was ditched at a hospital early on
His name was birthed from the odd writings on the petition form left with him
He was called a freak
He was called a monster
He was abandoned due to a birth defect
His fingers were webbed. Fortunately, the bone was not fused.
He could barely use his hands at all
They didn't treat him
He ended up being raised in a church that also dually served the purposes of an orphanage.
He didn't have very many prospects
But he took an interest in the anatomy of the human body
There wasn't very much research material though
He also wasn't very literate early on
So he didn't change his destiny through reading
His destiny changed through a different type of consumption
He wasn't actually kicked out of the orphanage at 13 years old
He ran away
The nuns and priest thought it was part of some grand plan that he was born the way he was.
They were planning to help him find work
Help him have a proper life
He had spent a lot of his time daydreaming
A lot of time was spent dreaming
Hoping he could one day use his hands
It was very rare to have webbed fingers
Let alone for it to be every single one
He was treated like he was the plague
He was isolated from his peers
So he ran away
He stole to survive
He stole the resources he needed
Years went by this way...

He was planning to operate on himself
But he was stopped by a man at the last moment
A man who was a 'fake' doctor. He was a scammer that had pretended to have graduated from The University of Edinburgh.
He had fooled everyone, even himself.
This was a bit easier back then
He was Doctor Dochas
He told Visdre that he would accept him as an apprentice if he let him operate on him
Visdre saw this as nothing but a miracle. It was hope.
But there was a catch
He had to agree to do three years of work first
His food and housing would be provided on the house by the doctor.
He didn't think much of it. So he agreed readily.
He became a ressurectionist. This had nothing to do with ressurection.
During the day. He would sleep and receive lessons from the man if he wasn't working
But at night...
He would dig up fresh graves
He would haul them to the doctor, for study.
He was even allowed to watch!
The time went by quickly this way
When the time came for the sugery, he had decided against it.
The doctor surprisingly didn't put up a fuss.
Visdre became an Apothecary
He eventually even became a doctor
He didn't know about destiny and things such as that.
But he was born with an Extraordinary destiny
In the womb he was able to consume information and grow his destiny from normal before even being born.
How did he do this?
He did it through dreams
Through a desire to dream
His uniqueness lied in his awareness while unconscious
He was calculating unknowningly before he had even been born
The misfortune the universe had thrown at him had put him in a good position in life
He was well respected and lived a good life
But something was off
Vengeful spirits haunted him
He had always enjoyed the lucidity he had in dreams
He was always aware in his dreams
In his dreams, he was almost unstoppable.
He was an entirely different person
The spirits were the owners of the bodies that had been cut-open. The ones dissected for study against their will. The ones he had dug up.
Because of his awareness in dreams
He could see them
He could hear them
Sometimes even while awake
He hid such symptoms afraid of what would happen if others were to find out
He didn't wish to become a monster again
But they grew stronger
He became more scared
He reached a tipping point
He had a meltdown
He experienced a realization
He tore the spirits apart in his dreams
He used their bodies to open a gateway to the spirit realm
During the day he was just an old man
He was Doctor Mallaichte
At night however
He was the emperor of the spirit realm
An unstoppable generator of chaos and distortion
His destiny had become perfect
When he retired
He didn't wait to die
He paid some people quite hansomely to be buried alive
He was convinced that this was his destiny
He wondered what would happen to him if he passed away while in the spirit realm
He expected he could stay there forever
When he had begun to feel himself suffocating
When he was starting to lose consciousness
He tried to free himself
His body fundamentally rejected to let him just die
But it was too late
He couldn't even scratch the inside due to his nails being far too deformed
He tried to sleep
But the fear was too much
He wasn't able to die in the spirit realm
Advertisement
He only felt sad that he wasn't able to see what would happen
He died
What he experienced, however, was something different
It was absolutely nothing
But he had a uniquness to him
One he had before he had even been born
The origin of his misfortune
He experienced the abyss
His destiny was eternal
Time passed by weirdly
There was nothing
But he loved it
He studied it
Finally
He was able to dream
His dreams were special
They had been connected to the spirit realm when he was alive
It was like his backyard
There were vengeful spirits, demons, hiveminds; hidden existences in this realm.
They would try to contact you
They would try to stop you
It was very easy to be trapped forever there
It wasn't a good place to be
But it was his home
He wasn't able to break past the chaos or order that surrounded the realm
So instead, he studied the hidden existences within
His destiny was still just eternal
He formed himself a true body
He formed himself a true existence (a domain)
He returned to the abyss
He studied it
He adopted a new name
He became a god
He was no longer Visdre Mallaichte
That person had died too long ago
He was Somnus
He had come to find out the universe was bigger then he had expected
There was more than just the spirit realm
The abyss was something that was outside existence
It was something that simply didn't exist
But he studied and explored it
His destiny had become paradox
Paradoxical Destiny
He began to manipulate nonexistence
He came to find there were many different universes
There were multiverses
The rules were decided by the gods
The universes were housed by them
But the Gods were housed by something else
He began to become sane
Extremely sane
He discovered the condensed version of an existence
He was able to distort a representation of the body of what housed the gods
He had found out about the existence of overgods
He constructed a room in the abyss
These overgods were never meant to be revealed
The representation should never be seen at that level
Through his law of distortion he could see through it
He was seeing things he shouldn't have
He would host a service
He would provide a convenient service for the gods
He explored many overgods
Most didn't react to his presence
He could see his condensed existence as well
It was a grey circle
The loop of distortion
The Law of Distortion
He saw other god's existences as well
But he also came to find out the hard way
That not having your existence anchored is very dangerous
The representation allowed for better manipulation
Being outside of something makes it easier to change that thing
If he removed his loop
If he removed his law
He was removing himself from both existence and non-existence
He went to a place that should never be named
There he saw an incomprehensible number of representations of overgods
They floated about that space like a gust of snowflakes
There was an endless amount
Attached to each one were the gods
Sometimes a few
Sometimes a lot
His body wasn't even able to appear here
He was just a grey circle
This was how he would anchor onto an overgod
If he waited too long
The endless swarm of circles would disperse
They would scatter as if he was the plague
There were things that existed here
The foundation for all things and concepts
They didn't have a destiny like Somnus
They also didn't have No Destiny either
These things seemingly always existed
They were under completely different rules
These 'things' are known as original incarnations
You shouldn't even try to grasp what they are
They do have names though
Life. Death. Pain. Fury. Anger. Wrath. Hope. Hallucination. Creation.
Even Destiny
This is barely a drop in the bucket
If you could think of a concept of something
You would likely find its original incarnation here
But this was not the multiverse
That's a lower level container
This was something you should never interact with
This is something you should never try to comprehend
Somnus loved chaos
He loved the unexpected
He thrived in it
But...
Original Incarnations
He feared them
If you don't find an anchor soon enough after entering this special space
The overgods will naturally disperse leaving you to be singled out
An incarnation by the name of Erase
It would approach him
Everything would shake
This was a different type of fear
He had felt fear when he died as a human
But he had planned that
He knew that if he died as he was
If he died here
He wouldn't even experience abyss
He wouldn't even experience nothing
He would be completely wiped out
No matter what
Every trace
So he tended to avoid that space which should never be named
There is a limit to a paradoxical destiny
It isn't wise to gaze upon original incarnations
He still had to do research
He still grew
He had found some interesting things
He decided to explore that space
He wanted to look directly at an original incarnation
When he gazed upon the body of Destiny
It looked back at him
He was wiped out completely
He was reborn
There was an image in his mind
A screeching sound
"ThAt Is ThE oNly waRnIng"
He had restarted
He killed himself far earlier this time
Quickly building his paradoxical destiny once more.
He became Somnus again
He made sure to avoid gazing at the incarnations while traveling and looking through that space
In his mind he still harbored thoughts
"What makes them better than me?"
"What if I were to become an overgod."
A bigger circle
"Could I get another warning?"
"Could I endure?"
He had attained great fortune from merely looking at Destiny
He became aware of the rules it had set
He needed more of it
His manipulation
His distortion had improved
His domain was taking on true aspects of time
He viewed himself far above those mortals he had grown up with
He was in an entirely different class
He was satisfied with his position
Satisfied until he was sent back in time from merely looking at 'it'.
That kind of power
It made him feel like he was a mortal
How did they attain such power?
His domain was time
His law Distortion
But was it really?
Somnus was enlightened
He turned this enlightenment into an Angel
This angel was his pocket watch
His experience being reborn once again as Visdre
That type of distortion was on another level
He would surpass it!
He needed to become an overgod first
Baby steps
Little did Somnus know...
There was an original incarnation quite interested in him
Knowledge
"You will help me."
Knowledge was upset with not having a destiny
It wasn't even no destiny
Destiny didn't allow it
Balance agreed with her
Knowledge wasn't as powerful as the others.
But it was of necessity in the make-up of everything
It was an essential concept
Knowledge only wanted to use the power of destiny because he had become aware of his situation.
He had realized he was in a book
He wanted to reach out to actual 'reality'.
Knowledge did something very taboo
Something Taboo would even frown upon
He broke some of the rules set by Space
He broke some of the rules set by Time
He was planning to become stronger
So strong that he could go beyond
He needed the help of outsiders though
He knew what he was made of
He understood many truths
So he split his true soul and stripped away all power from it
It was still too powerful
So he just destroyed it a few billion times
Until only the faintest specks remained
Still too powerful
So he destroyed it a few billion more times
It was barely a few words at this point
"That should do it."
"The System"
That was what his true soul had become
It couldn't even be called a true soul at the moment
It was literally just two words now
"Maybe... I should destroy it some more..."
He decided that was enough though
He easily scanned every overgod in existence
Looking for the perfect situation
The others would notice if he went missing
But what if he was able to become an original incarnation again?
What if he doubled his power in an instant
How would the others be any wiser?
He looked back into History
He was not able to interact with Reality
He would bless someone with the curse of knowledge
So they would give birth to his body
He found someone who held a uniqueness a perfect candidate for such a blessing
The mans name was Visdre Mallaichte
It's hard to even interact with the overgods without destroying them entirely
He was about to bless the man with knowledge before he was even born
Unfortunately, Trickery started to feel something off
Prediction also jumped in and held Knowledge down
Judgement showed up and restrained him
"We aren't to mess with them."
Knowledge had been put under watch
All of the original incarnations balanced each other out
If it was just one.
You could do what you wanted
But there were so many rules that they literally dog-piled on each other and wouldn't let anyone mess with the farms.
Knowledge didn't give a shit about the rules
He wasn't satisfied with his place
He was going to go beyond
So he couldn't even use his curse of knowledge
From a mere thought, many things could change
He looked for loopholes and found many
He found a different man
The man's name was Fei Fangbian
Knowledge could change someones entire existence with a mere word
He placed one suggestion in the mind of Fei
"Read."
This almost destroyed that man's universe
The man was a child at the time
Barely a few years old
Barely even knew how to read
But he went to that library the next day as if his life had depended on it.
He had a weird dream...
He had found reading was incredibly fun all of a sudden
It became his favorite hobby
Knowledge had made a plan he found not too shabby
He placed a suggestion in the mind of Visdre as well
This was before he was even born
It was also a single word
"Dream."
Knowledge saw infinite paths and opportunity
He was a being who constantly had legendary thoughts
This plan was only one of them
These words would inspire great change
After a few hours
He saw that Fei had become God of his universe
He then gave him another word
He should be strong enough to handle it
"Gaia"
Immediately Moltzrar was enlightened
He had come up with a legendary plan in an instant
He was planning to become eternal
He would do so through his creation
He would create a paradox
He would go further in destiny
Moltzrar then created Gaia
During the creation process
Knowledge imparted the two words into not the soul of Gaia
Neither the spirit body or existence
Knowledge's words were powerful
He simply sent the words to Gaia before he was created
He sent them through time
Time wasn't paying attention
Focus was trying to get Time to do something
Gaia would be aware of nonexistence
Before he was anything at all
After a few minutes
When Gaia had gotten a little older
He decided to send three words
Since Gaia was himself
He should be able to handle at least three
Those words were
Scope
Object
Global
Knowledge knew this would implant the clue for himself to go beyond
He should handle those words just fine
Those other original incarnations knew Knowledge was smart
But none of them ever expected words could cause such a problem
Not even Plot! or Convenience!
Hell even Thought wouldn't be able to comprehend such planning.
Trickery was fooled
Planning didn't see it coming
Past completely was too slow
Future wasn't even paying attention to Present
Present himself was meditating and couldn't be bothered
Destiny didn't see it coming
Prediction was wrong about Future as well
Judgement didn't really care
He was just there doing his goddamn job
It had been a long time since Somnus had been Visdre
He was now going to finally be able to observe the process of becoming an overgod
Normally it would be hard to observe a sea of consciousness directly like what he was doing
Or even to find a specific overgod he had left
But the forming overgod 'G77' was different
It was easy for him to track him down in the swarms of overgods
Somnus had formed a special connection with Gaia
Gaia had prayed to Somnus in the past for help
When you pray to an existence
Your spirit body will instantly appear in the sky of their true existence
Through the spirit body of Gaia
The green star in his sky
He watched on as the ascension began
This was going to be exciting

Together, Orson and Enoa battle a magic-obsessed militia, clash with a host of rivals, and face constant adventure on their journey to find the Dreamside Road. *Updates Monday and Friday The Dreamside Road is now on TopWebFiction! Vote so people know this exists. _____________________________________ NOTE: The Progression tag applies specifically to Enoa. Also, fair warning, that element doesn't enter the story until she begins her studies. Content: Main characters range in age from teenagers to people in their thirties and older, but it will not contain gratuitous violence or explicit sexual content. It also won’t shy away from implication, anything to make this story and its world feel more real. Characters will freely allude to potentially triggering topics, including living with a disability, facing terminal illness, coping with trauma, surviving societal destabilization, and the consequences of bigotry. At its most intense, the Dreamside Road is a hard PG-13. Worldbuilding: This is not a story with a lot of early exposition scenes, conveniently explaining ‘magic systems’ and political dynamics. Readers will learn, progressively, as the characters do. This story/world has a ‘magic system’, or rather, a set of systems, but the effort to quantify and understand the truth of the setting plays a role in the backstory, as well as in some character motivations. In that same vein, not every character has a firm grasp on the nature of their world, and not every piece of dialog from every character should be taken as entirely truthful Worldbuilding. Also, this isn't the softest Sci-fi. There are at least some basic explanations given for various elements, but Royal Road does not give me a spectrum to choose from. Given the choice between hard and soft, let's just say The Dreamside Road won't be cited in any college Physics papers. Setting and Theme: The Dreamside Road walks the line between fantasy and science fiction and deals with finding one’s place in a changing world. Many of the characters in this story are United States natives and the story begins in the United States, my homeland. However, knowledge or interest in this country is not necessary to understand the story, especially as it progresses. Also, as this is a novel that deals with societal collapse and while that damage may be widespread, in story, I don’t want to overstep and critique the culture of others’ unless I have particular knowledge in a given area. Ultimately, the Dreamside Road is American in the same way Harry Potter is English, fantasies that do not have a full secondary world, but with enough original elements to fully diverge the setting from our the real world.
