《Childhood Dreaming》Chapter 5

The stars twinkled overhead while two sets of eyes stared upon them. Not a single cloud covered up the beauty of outer space, or its vast, infinite set of questions still left unanswered, waiting for humankind to solve them. The forest around them made for a nice scenery and separated them from all other trivial matters in their normal lives. Only a slight gust of wind broke the silence.

"Adam, do you remember the first time we met?"

"Wasn't it during PE?"

"Yeah, we were paired up together during the obstacle course."

Chris grinned as he turned towards Adam.

"Oh no…."

"I'll never forget how stupid you looked when you tripped on that tree log and face planted in mud!"

"Hey, don't laugh! It's your fault for not warning me you know. We were supposed to be a team!"

"Yeah, yeah, but you gotta admit that it was at least a little bit funny."

"Sure…"

"Kinda funny how we would have never met if not for PE classes."

"What's so funny about that?"

"Just thinking about how the universe works. Like, what are the chances for us even existing and deciding to go to the same school as each other. What are the chances for life to even exist in this infinite universe? Just look up at the sky. Look at all the empty space, and still we managed to exist in the exact same place at the same time."

"Sure you're not just overthinking it? Well, I guess you kinda have a point. The universe sure does work in mysterious ways."

The silence once again laid upon them.

"Adam…thanks for sticking with me all this time."

"No problem. I'm happy I made that choice too. Just think about all the fun I'd miss out on if it weren't for our friendship, like that time at the camping trip with the school."

"Ohhh, yeah. I had totally forgotten about that!"

"It was a lot of fun, but next time maybe you should bring a fully working tent."

Adam smirked at Chris, turning red from embarrassment.

"You know camping isn't my strong suit! Anyway, if it hadn't been for that, maybe we wouldn't have grown so close to begin with, literally."

"You didn't have to bring that up…"

"Why? It was my first time spooning with someone."

"Don't phrase it like that! Ugh, I shouldn't have shared my tent with you."

"I'm joking!"

Some awkward few seconds went past.

"Maybe you should have brought a larger tent." Chris said.

"Or maybe you should've taken care of your own tent."

"Come on, I know you liked it, whether you admit it or not."

They both filled the air with laughter before once again, silence took over.

"It's getting late, maybe we should start heading back? Don't want our families worrying."

"You're probably right…"

The boys packed their stuff before they started walking home.

"Hey…" A slightly awkward voice said while peeping up at his best friend.

"No matter what happens, you'll be there for me right?"

"Of course, through thick and thin!"

They both smiled at each other happily. Thanks for being my friend, Adam. I know I can trust you, no matter what.
