《Betrayal of the Dead》6. -Lemon chicken?-

Isla perked up as he heard a distinct rabbit-like squeal coming from behind his back.
“The trap… I completely forgot!”
He scrambled around and picked up his spear, knife and club.
He was ready for battle.
…
“Stop fucking moving you little bastard!”
Isla cursed the ‘rabbit’ as it skilfully dodged another spear strike.
It resembled a rabbit in every way, except for the two small horns growing out of its temples, it was also a bit bigger.
Isla wasn’t good with the spear, spear combat was not included in his scout training.
So even after 5 minutes of continuously thrusting it at the horned rabbit that was trapped in the pitfall he had gotten nowhere.
He was getting tired and frustrated.
So he did the only logical thing that a raging gamer would do.
He threw something to vent his anger.
*Thunk*
The rock knife struck the rabbit exactly in between its brows, its brain started to slowly leak out of its punctured skull.
*SILENCE*
“Huuuu!?”
Isla looked down at the hand that had launched the stone making a noise of disbelief.
“What the fuck… I have aimbot?!
He picked up another stone and quickly threw it at a tree about 2 Isla’s away.
And missed.
By a long shot.
He shook his head, thankful that there was no-one there to see him miss.
…
Having repaired his trap he made his way back to his cave as night fast approached.
The fire he had set up previously was still burning brightly so he added in a log for good measure.
He picked out a boulder that he would make his butchering boulder.
He cleaned it with some water from the gourd and laid down the rabbit.
He chopped off its head and strung it up on a stalactite that hung outside of his cave.

As his late uncle once told him as he was preparing a rabbit they had caught together on one of their days out,
“Raw rabbit’s blood that ain’t prepared properly could kill ya”
Yeah.
He died just like his parents.
A car crash.
…
It was getting really dark when Isla decided to skin and cook the rabbit over the fire.
He took it off the stalactite and brought it over to his butcher spot.
Isla started by hacking off its lower legs.
“I’m going to keep these… rabbit’s feet are meant to bring good luck…”
After putting the feet away he peeled back the skin on the legs revealing meat.
He cut with his knife between the rabbit’s legs.
What followed was easy, he just peeled off the rest of the hide, similar to how you would take off a sock.
And put it away saying.
“This hide is absolutely useless to me, I have no way to tan this… fuck me it’s good hide too…”
It turns out we were lied to by games, rabbit’s don’t drop ready for use rabbit hide.
Then very softly and precisely he removed the innards, making sure not to rupture them, if that happened the meat would be ruined.
He placed them into a previously prepared hole.
He washed his hands and the remaining meat with water from his gourd.
“Finally…”
It was now ready to be cooked.
“Just plain meat won’t really taste great, hmmm I guess I could stuff it with some of those yellow berries, a bit like lemon chicken.”
…
A smell akin to honey barbecue, or was it cheesecake(?), filled Isla’s nostrils.
The stuffed rabbit was done.
Isla placed it down on the bowl-stone giving it a second to cool down.
His stomach was rumbling and he was salivating like a rabid dog.

He couldn’t resist it.
He took the first bite.
*SILENCE*
Bliss.
Tears filled his eyes.
He let out a muted sign.
“wow…”
Memories of his mother’s cooking engulfed his mind.
He took bite after bite through tears and sobs.
Then he smiled with juices still rolling down his chin.
“Thanks for this mum…”
…
After he finished eating every last scrap of meat he cleaned himself and the bones with the last of the water from his makeshift canteen.
He gathered some long grass and leaves and made himself a sleeping spot by the fire, as soon as he laid down Isla.exe shut down and he entered his dream world.
…
This was the first time he had slept after his original bodies death.
Isla opened his eyes.
All around him a light blue, creamy mist.
He held his breathe waiting for something to happen.
*SILENCE*
Nothing did.
He breathed out.
‘Of course’
He thought as the mist quickly vanished.
In his view were six corpses.
…
“AAA-!”
Isla woke up with a shout.
But then he forgot why he had started shouting.
He had just experienced one of his best sleeps in existence.
“Wow… that… was so… good… I feel so alive right now”
He glanced at the fire which had gone out through the night.
Then he got an idea.
Charcoal.
It was perfect.
Great for infections, food poisoning, helping stop diarrhoea, as a makeshift deodorant and soap, and for writing.
There was a hole in the ground that was about the shape of a human head where he shoved all of the charcoal from the previous nights fire.
“Now I just need water and some more berries to make activated charcoal”
Why activated charcoal you ask?
Well it has already been stated above.
All but for writing and as deodorant are functions are functions of activated charcoal.
Activated charcoal has a lot less impurities and can even be digested without major health problem.
So although it is no a universal health potion, it is the closest thing that can be acquired easily.
Sadly the effects do seriously lack in comparison.
…
Isla made his way over to the brook picking berries and putting them in his mouth along the way, he had decided that the ones that he needed for the charcoal would be collected on his way back.
He got to the brook.
But this time he went a bit further along and saw…

The Humble Life of a Skill Trainer
For Joshua Still, Skills were the lifeblood of his business. He wanted to understand them, collect many of them, and teach a few of them. Which was a problem because while his profession of a Skill Trainer was perfectly legal, it was frowned upon by most of the kingdom. After all, it wouldn't do for a non-tailor to teach Tailoring. Or, so says the Tailors Guild. The same could be said by the Blacksmiths, the Bakers, the Butchers, the Candlestick Makers, the Mages, and every other Guild with enough money and clout to complain. But still, Skill Trainers provide a valuable service, and so he has managed to start his business and keep it under the table. To a degree. With many a bribe. But his quiet anonymous life of research, practice, and training was about to change. When the Baron demands you pay him a visit, you have little choice.

Dominion Expansion (a 4X LitRPG)
Clay is one of the world's top players of 4X games, a genre where the goal is to eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, and eXterminate. He's also one of the only players in the world to so stubbornly stick to the one city strategy, a favorite tactic of his that involves only ever using a single city or planet depending on the game's setting. All that matters to him is winning with his favorite strategy, but earning the respect of his fellow players for taking a sub-optimal strategy to its highest level has always been a nice bonus. And now it is because of his skill and entertaining determination that he has been chosen to represent a higher realm in a strategy game where the fate of Earth and dozens of other worlds are at stake. To the victor goes the spoils, and the spoils include entire worlds and billions of lives. That's how he ends up representing the ascended realm of Hell in a grand "game" between an entire pantheon of godly beings and other higher powers. But while it may just be a game to those overseeing it, it is a genuine war for survival to those participating in it where billions of real lives will go to the victor of whoever wins, and many will die before the game is over. Quick Author's Notes: System inspired by Civilization, Endless Legend, Stellaris, and Crusader Kings 2. Combat mechanics inspired by the Total War series. Slow-paced with many long-term plans. Protagonist has a personality heavily inspired by Ron Swanson. Know who that is and love him? You should like Clay. Know who Ron Swanson is and hate him? You'll probably hate Clay. Planning on writing every single day (turn). Days with important things happening will have the system/game mechanics be the priority of the chapter. Days where there isn't really anything important happening will be more slice-of-life and focused on character interactions. Designed a dice-based randomized map generator to create the world as the story goes on, so I don't even know myself exactly what's going to happen as a lot is dependent on world generation. Tech tree with hundreds of technologies already designed. There is a "harem," but it's not the main focus, the girls won't be cardboard cutouts, and I'm not going to completely forget about any previous women in the relationship whenever a new one comes along. One last thing. The "game" starts off with primitive technology level. The current plan is for the "endgame" tech level to be equivilent to WW2-era technology. After that and war just gets boring until you end up in space. Cover is temporary and made from royalty-free stock images while waiting for the real cover's commission to finish.
