《Twisted King》6: Reunion

Our small group had made a lot of progress towards reaching the city, but even as the city grew closer and closer the sense of the journey being complete didn't appear.

Eventually we got to the very outer limits of the city and I realised why the sense of completion hadn't come.

In front of our group were the rank A heroes, I quickly covered my face with the wizard orcs robe as a cloak.

They didn't seem to notice us all that much, they were out in the fields of the city training with a group of knights.

But going any further would arouse suspicion and cause me to stand out, I had the elderly miner go ahead as the leader of the group and explain to the guards.

They seemed satisfied enough with our explanation as some of the heroes looked at our group, including me.

It made my nerves flare up for a moment but eventually we reached the city and were allowed to enter without an absurd amount of difficulty.

Then the group parted ways with me, leaving me with a chance to look through the city.

I entered a weapon shop and saw the owners rather large collection.

"Want enchanted or unenchanted weapons?

I had no idea of which was better, so I just went for an enchanted weapon if only because of the possibility of messing with it.

There was more than enough gold left for me to rent a room at an inn and plan what I would do going forward.

The bed of the inn looked far more comfortable than the one in the castle, and the privacy gave me a chance to test the enchanted weapons I had bought.

I had purchased three daggers and two rings with enchantments on them.

Unfortunately role reversal seemed to have no effect after all, but I still wasn't annoyed with what I had purchased since they seemed useful.

I took a look at my status window before sleeping, I had decided to leave the city after staying the night.

There was a goal forming quickly, save the other E tier members and kill the king.

There was likely a very short time limit until all of E tier were dead or tortured, rescuing the ones who had been left outside of the city seemed logical.

I had managed to gather information on how to get back to the others, a teleportation array in the center of town that would allow me to get close to the outside of the capital city.

With the knowledge that my plans were basically assured of success I went to sleep fairly early, waking up as the sun rose.

The teleportation array required only around 10% of my total funds which allowed me to still have a fair amount of wealth left over, the miners had informed me the day before that I had robbed a fairly successful mining operation so my sheer amount of wealth was quite high for a single person.

The manager at the array was disinterested in me, he explained that typically only nobles used it but since I could afford to pay then he didn't care.

The array itself was a stone disc on the ground with ancient symbols carved into it, they started shining as I stepped onto it and had it exit to just outside the neighbouring capital thanks to the operators knowledge of the location.

I travelled through, my teleportation leading me to fall a small height into a very sparse forrest.

The capital city was behind me, I saw smoke from a campfire quite far up ahead and approached cautiously.

I had half expected to find a camp full of bandits or the corpses from E tier, but the fact that they were camping and seemed to be relatively ok reassured me as I arrived.

There were plenty of familiar faces, I tried my best not to look intimidating as I approached ; My lack of a weapon and the sense of familiarity allowed me to get close enough for them to recognize me proper.

"Holy shit Rem?!"

"Yes, I was lucky that they hadn't checked the place they sent me to in a while. It was a cave fairly close to this place and there were no living monsters."

Of course this was a lie, but explaining the trickster god's gift and my sudden explosive growth wouldn't make me any less suspicious to them.

"Well we're just glad you're ok, we don't have enough food to stay in this place for long and were thinking of getting a small group to check out some ruins up ahead. What class did you get?"

"I'm a healer."

I expected them to be unhappy as I told them but their bright and relieved expressions told me something was strange.

"E tier doesn't really have any healers, most are in D and C tier since they're quite useful. You can at least treat cuts and bruises yeah?"

Neglecting to tell them about deterioration and degeneration was one thing, but it seemed stupid to me to hide my actual healing abilities.

"I can heal anything up to broken bones and missing limbs, I don't know about organs though."

I hadn't checked the capabilities of any other healers and they hadn't either so they couldn't decide whether I was a powerful one or not, but being able to do that much would make me an asset to them for sure.

"That's amazing! The exploration group could really use you, but you must be tired right?"

He seemed to be a leader type, I decided to answer honestly.

"I slept not too long ago, so I'm ready to go whenever they're ready."

This seemed to please him, as he brought me over to a small group with makeshift weapons.

There was a knight called Callum, a magician called Xara and a warrior called Ben.

They seemed to be extremely low level, 1 to 3 at most but even that was better than the rest of E tier.

I could see why we were cast aside, there was nothing particularly strong about any member of the group myself not included.

The four of us were eventually told to set off towards a ruin in search of resources and riches that would let our fifty~ campers survive.

Being suddenly sent into unknown dangers was not a great first impression of the nameless leader.

Out of fifty plus people only three had the potential to kill monsters, the rest had either been too scared or too weak which disheartened me a tad.

The journey took us the better part of an hour and we were eventually greeted with an imposing run down fortress, free of guards.

The other three were talking amongst themselves, I presumed I wasn't included by virtue of being a loner.

Xara eventually came over to me and tried to engage in conversation.

"So how did you survive all on your own Rem?"

I had thought over the answers to questions like that many times before arriving at camp.

"Pure dumb luck, and I was careful."

The answer seemed to her satisfaction as Callum and Ben talked about their last fight with the beasts of the forest, the slightest sign of success had inflated their egos a fair bit.

We entered the ruin and were met with an ambush from a room full of rotting corpse knights, I presumed the tohers would struggle but it took only Callum and ben with little support from Xara to clean the room of undead and even raise one of their levels from what I could hear them saying.

The deeper we went into the ruin, the less undead confronted us.

Having survived in a dangerous place already I was keenly aware that we could suddenly walk into an extremely dangerous situation, I spent thirty whole minutes of exploration on hyper alert until we found a throne room.
