Chapter 9: I can Tank?
‘Hey Jun, you are level 20 now, want to upgrade your class? Normally it takes a quest but, meh.” –Faefae
‘Oh, sure!’ –Me
*DING*
Congratulations on obtaining a class: Bronze Blademaster
Choose your specialization: Damage, Tank
‘Hey Faefae what is the difference between damage and tank specialization?’ –Me
‘Level 20 is when your class becomes a full tank, but you can choose to gain more damage via armor penetration or to upgrade parry to 100% damage block with 20% chance of riposte and ever 10 levels that bonus goes up.’ –Faefae
‘Well I’m definitely choosing damage then!’ –Me
Once I choose damage I checked the dagger specialization and sure enough I had an extra 20% armor penetration while using daggers. That’s pretty cool as at level 100 I should be doing bonus damage to targets regardless of armor!
‘Okay what skills can I get?’ –Me
‘You get two again, 10 silvers each so I’ll just deduct it. One is taunt and the other is Lifesteal which is a passive.’ –Faefae
*DING*
Skills Unlocked: Taunt, Lifesteal
Checking the skills I didn’t see anything special. The taunt was a basic taunt that made the target face me for 10 seconds at level 1 and the Lifesteal stole 5% of my damage back as health at level 1. Taunt is probably very powerful at level 10 if that time increases to 100 seconds!
“Are you ready loser?” –Lilith
So I’m loser now? Call me a slave sure, I’m pretty much that, but I’m not a loser. Best to ignore her.
“Hey I’m talking to you, answer me.” –Lilith
“Oh well you said loser, I was sure you were talking to someone else, not the person who beat your ass in one attack.” –Me
What is this? Why did she pause. If her skin wasn’t red I’d be sure she was turning a shade of red. Is that anger? Shock? Woe me who has no clue about women.
Wait. Why is she looking at me funny. I must have a weird gaze on my face or something.
“Who are you, and where is the weakling that gave my axe back without a fight?” –Lilith
“My killing you was an accident, I always planned to give the axe back. Doing what you say to help you only makes sense. That doesn’t mean you get to insult me at every second. I can always leave at any time or even kill you again. Plus I’m in a better mood now that I have the coal and gained my level 20 class upgrade.” –Me
“What? How did you upgrade your class so fast? My quest sent me to kill the first floor boss and that is why I’m here. I also didn’t ask anyone in my guild to help as doing so would cause complications…” –Lilith
Hah, must be tough being a girl in a guild, asking for help must make her look weak. Maybe that is why she forced me to help.
“Fine fine whatever, let’s do this! But know this. I’m not stopping on the first floor, I need all the iron in this cave!” –Me
Gotta stay on task, can’t let her completely walk all over me!
At this I stood up and started walking into the entrance.

“Come out Faefae, we got work to do. What level are you now anyways?” –Me
“15.” –Faefae
“20.” –Lilith
“Good job, soon you will be 20! And if you are 20 now, what level where you when I killed you? I leveled up to 20 so surely you were 20 before.” –Me
“I was 20, but I was close to 21 and simply lost all the experience in the level.” –Lilith
“Yes, you cannot lose a rank, so every 10 levels is a cap that you cannot go under from death. Meaning no matter what, you won’t ever go under level 20.” –Faefae
“Yes, what your pet said. Wait what? How do you have a talking pet?” –Lilith
“Just a support A.I. pet, but she’s very useful so ask her anything. Also I need to level up stealth so I’ll just attack stuff you attack or that attacks you for now. Just stop when you see ore deposits!” –Me
“By the way what should I call you? Psychotic Death seems a little much.” –Lilith
“Because Lilith is any better? Fine you can call me Jun since Faefae does anyways. But I’m not calling you Lilith.” –Me
“Well if you let me use your real name then you can call me Mei.” –Lilith
“Wait? Are you also Chinese?” –Me
“What are you daft? We have been speaking Chinese this whole time. Languages that you know do not get auto translated and since we are on the US server the default language is English, so if you hear Chinese then the person is actually speaking Chinese!” –Lilith
“Wow that’s cool, I didn’t even notice it, I must have been speaking it on accident or something as I normally speak English!” –Me
“I just feel sorry for you since like me you are stuck in the US surrounded by Americans. Also are you in one of the advanced capsules too?” –Lilith
“Yes, doing rehab so I’m stuck in this game until April 12th next year.” –Me
“Same, though my date is April 10th.” –Lilith
“Well let’s go, iron ore won’t mine itself!” –Me
Seeing the sad look on her face I decided to change the subject and simply end the conversation so I can get my ore!
Being a Warrior, Lilith wasn’t able to just walk past the mobs like I could, so we had to actually fight stuff. Perfect chance for me to level up my skills, so my strategy became stealth til combat, taunt a mob away, use piercing strike and aura, while occasionally flying around in combat.
After a few hours we finally made it back to my corner which apparently was right before the boss even though I simply thought it was about halfway through the floor.
“My ore!” –Me
I quickly ran to it and started mining. Success!
“Okay if I’m not mistaken, this is where I killed you so the boss should be near right?” –Me
“Yes but… are you going to be okay? I see you can taunt which is normal for a tank but you always seem to run around a lot and fly around randomly which is very weird.” –Lilith
“Well Mei, I’m simply leveling up my skills as they aren’t all level 3 yet. Though after this floor the only ones that aren’t level 3 are my flight skill and taunt, so my progress has been good.” –Me
Fortunately for me all my passives leveled up fast, even the new Lifesteal quickly leveled up to 15%. Unfortunately I had to take damage for that one to level up which I thought was stupid, but after I realized that, it was very easy to level up from 1 to 3.

“My last passive just leveled up in that last fight so I can finally fight for real, also my taunt lasts 20 seconds now so that should give you plenty of time to wail on the boss while I fly around and keep taunting.” –Me
Luckily taunt has no cooldown, it just costs 20 qi so I can spam it up to a certain point. Well it’s one of the more expensive abilities, but since I’m not a mage and I have large qi regen it isn’t an issue.
“Well all my skills are level 3 so it’s no big deal here. Also I cannot seem to spam my abilities as fast as you can for some reason, my qi regen is horrible!” –Lilith
“Ahh that is because you are a fighter and don’t have meditate skill. Hum… takes too long to teach a similar skill so you are out of luck for now. Custom skills are the best though for the little things, you should try to make some!” –Me
“Huh? Custom skills? Wait! Now I remember where I saw your name before. You were the first one to create an SS ranked skill! What does it do?” –Lilith
“Makes me run fast and helps my qi regen.” –Me
“That’s overpowered! Can you teach me?” –Lilith
What is this? Is this the legendary look? I’ve never experienced this before but the look she is giving me has to be legendary! Bards must be singing songs about such looks! This look is so mesmerizing that I forgot her question, oh wait! I’m just supposed to say yes to anyone that gives that look right? RIGHT?
“Uhh… yes? Um… but we have a boss to kill!” –Me
Phew, hope that worked, say yes then deflect to something more important. But how are men supposed to resist such a look?
“Stupid blockhead.” –Faefae
“What was that Faefae?” –Me
Also fighting all these mobs I noticed Faefae got a lot better at rooting targets and healing. She mainly healed Lilith as she was terrible at not taking damage. But it allowed Faefae to level up to 18 in a short amount of time. She’s finally able to perma root targets in this dungeon which is good!
“Oh nothing, you should be careful though. This girl is going to screw you over! Your name is still red and should stay that way for at least another day of straight killing so be careful!” –Faefae
“By the way, I noticed your name was Red before you killed me, but you don’t seem like a normal Red character.” –Lilith
“I leveled up from 15-20 purely by killing others, but as the leaderboard is not far from us, there isn’t much profit to it right now. I was going to head to the Old York kingdom and kill the people there but I need to wait for them to get stronger so I can get more benefit. I also need time to pass so people have more gold as I have no use for real life money.” –Me
“Ahh same with the money, that is why I still have this axe. My guild downed a world boss and it dropped and as the leader I took it of course. But if I wanted to sell it I would be forced to sell it for cash which I don’t need, so I must wait for people to have more gold then sell it.” –Lilith
“But that axe is amazing! Anyways what is the plan for the boss?” –Me
We did manage to get to his room despite all that talking. Now one more step and we should be in his aggro range, or at least inside his room.
“Well this guy is annoying, I was able to get him down to 10% and then he went berserk and became unstoppable! In just a few hits I had to abort and then you killed me.” –Lilith
“Okay so fight normally and then what at 10%?” –Me
This made me inspect the guy to see how much health he had. He’s humanoid and looks like an Ogre maybe?
Ogre Level 20 (Boss)
H: 60,000, A: 85-100, D: 60
So lots of damage but low armor, shouldn’t be too difficult.
“I see you have full plate armor, so your defense should be high right?” –Me
“Yes, he can’t break my defense until berserk, thus I can just beat on him until then. So just let me take hits until 10% then taunt and fly away! You seem to have mastered your movement in flight. I cannot even use it in combat, you have to teach me that too one day.” –Lilith
“Uh sure, sounds like a good plan!” –Me
And before I could do anything besides go into stealth, she was already charging the Ogre. I guess she really wants her class upgrade.
“Faefae keep her healed. I’m going to wait awhile so I don’t accidentally gain aggro, even though that should be low with my level 5 daggers.” –Me
“Fine.” –Faefae
What’s wrong with Faefae? Oh well no biggy. Once his health hit 75% which only took her about 10 seconds, I stealthed up behind him and with my new upgraded Piercing Aura, unleashed my favorite combo!

And just like that, the stupid boss lost a good 10% life and I backed away to insure I didn’t have aggro. Apparently tank classes do more aggro per attack than non tank classes for some reason.
“Wow, you took 10% of his life in one second, how did you do that?” –Lilith
“Real life dagger skills plus high armor penetration.” –Me
At 50% armor pen plus all my bonuses, he didn’t stand a chance! And after another minute with her insane damage and me attacking every once in awhile, he finally reached 10%. I also noticed his size got bigger, health rose and armor rose even though he stayed 10%
“Now!” –Lilith
TAUNT! –Me
Oh shit! That is one scary mofo with that huge ass club in his hand! I always attacked from behind so never noticed. He also grew to a solid 3 meters tall so the first thing I did was fly away! Fortunately the ceiling was 50 meters high so no problems here.
I even flew straight up so he had nowhere to run.
“Buahahahahaha so easy! Nothing can stop me now!” –Lilith
“Crazy girl…” –Faefae
“Why do you say that Faefae?” –Me
Somehow she ended up on my shoulder so we are too far from Mei to hear us chatter.
“Do you see that barbarous woman? She is attacking like a wild woman! Have some self-respect!” –Faefae
Still not sure what Faefae’s problem is with Mei. All I see when I look at her is hotness. I’m literally blinded by anything else, I can’t even look her into the eyes for any length of time or my eyes might fall out.
Just glad this game doesn’t have any touch stimulation or I’d have a massive woody the entire time I’m around her.
“Time to die bitch!” –Lilith
*DING*
Level up!
After flying down I congratulated Lilith as it seemed she was able to class change on the spot. Though I thought that was weird.
“How are you able to class change on the spot?” –Me
“I’m helping her cause running back to town while Red would not benefit anyone. I also upgraded her skills since I can do that.” –Faefae
“Wow your pet is amazing! That’s it, you are now my permanent partner for this year of rehab and suffering! With your pet and taunting abilities, nothing will be able to stop us!” –Lilith
“That may not be possible, our goal is to take over Old York and kill everyone there and stay Red forever!” –Faefae
And before I could say a word, Lilith and Faefae started arguing and seemingly came to an agreement on what the course of my life would be. I tuned them out for a bit and checked the drops. Money split and we both got a gold so that was nice, but only a stupid club dropped! Stupid quest mobs!
Wait! Once his corpse disappeared I saw a shiny underneath him.
“What is that under his corpse? It looks like loot!” –Me
“What? Real loot from a regular quest boss? That’s rare…” –Lilith
“Oh it’s a dagger, and I use daggers! Get!” –Me
Ogre’s Toothpick (Green)Attack:147-167Durability:100%Power: 24
Speed: 67
Stamina: 22
Requirements: Level 20
Seeing the two still arguing I simply equipped the dagger and pulled out my furnace to repair my gear and start making bronze gear since it appears it is going to be awhile before we move from this spot.

Typed this on a tablet so that is why there is an obvious lack of status windows. They will show up in later chapter when I'm at PC and can do all the necessary math to make them right. Next chapter decides Jun's fate. With or without his consent!

Fallout: Vault X
An original novel set in the Fallout universe, written to be accessible to all, featuring unique people and places. Vol.II. out now Fallout: Vault X tells the story of John. A vault dweller, who spent every day of his twenty five years underground. Like his father, and his father before him. Proud to live in the last remaining bastion of humanity, all that survived The Great War of the atomic age. Hidden deep below the surface of the earth, toiling under brutal conditions. Year after year, decade upon decade. All to expand into the natural cave system the Vault occupied, building for the future. However, John knew what his forefathers did not, that everything he’d been taught was a lie. After finishing school at the age of ten, John received his standard issue pipboy. An arm mounted personal computer, worn by everyone in the Vault. Used to coordinate the relentless pace of expansion, needed to work as an apprentice. To learn the craft that would be his life’s work. A noble calling to ensure a future for all that remained of the human race. A quirk of fate saw John equipped not with the crude, clunky, pipboy model his father wore. That almost everyone around him wore. His looked smaller, sleeker, finished in a jet black sheen. And capable of doing far more than its drab counterparts. The world above had been ravaged by atomic flames, yet life clung to its bones. The Red Valley fared better than most in the century since the bombs fell. The clean water and rich soil protected by rolling hills. All spared from direct strikes, for the most part. Life survived here. Trees spawned from charred ground, misshapen, green leaves turned red. Along with simple crops, grown wild at first, then cultivated by the survivors. The scavengers of the old world were inventive, hardy people. All determined to rebuild in the ruins of a world they never knew. In the decades that passed settlements emerged. They grew, spreading along the valley floor. Reclaiming the pre-war remnants of the once industrialised heartland. Salvaging the robotic wonders of a bygone age to build their walls and work their fields. To protect them in the dark of the wasteland. But such things are uncommon in this world, and the rarer something is, the greater its value. And the worth of pre-war technology had not gone unnoticed. The last, real, power in this world rested in the mechanised hands of The Brotherhood of Steel. Forged from the mortally wounded old world military. The Brotherhood used its access to the weapons made for a conflict no one won to strike out into the wastes. Men and women were equipped with advanced armour, aerial transportation, high grade weaponry. Accompanied by the training, strength, and will, to put them to use. They established chapters and set up outputs far and wide. All dedicated to a single purpose. To ensure the technology left abandoned by its long dead creators didn’t fall into the wrong hands. Namely, any hands that were not their own. This is the world John escaped into. A place of horrors brought forth from atomic fire. A place where survival meant battling against the darkness. Fighting a war each day to get to the next. And war...war never changes

8 182Getting Hard (Journey of a Tank)
Herald Stone always built tank characters in every MMORPG he played. To be immortal—that was his first Goal, a simple childhood dream. However, the turbulent realities of life put an end to his gaming days. Years passed, and Herald Stone, now having attained success and stability, was presented with the opportunity to redeem himself...to fulfill his first Goal. Trivial? Childish? Others might think so. But Herald Stone always fulfilled his Goals—every single one. No matter what. Immortality beckoned in Mother Core Online, and this time Herald Stone would answer. Choosing a long-forgotten race, hidden away in an unknown region, the journey of an immortal tank begins. This is the tale of Herald Stone...getting hard. Schedule: Mon-Wed-Fri ~1.8k-2.3k words per chapter. Also published on Scribblehub. My other ongoing story: REND | Royal Road Expect a focus on building a true tank in MMORPGs. Heavy game elements and numbers are present. But actual math will take a backseat to strategies involving skill builds and synergies that steadily become more complex while remaining understandable. The main character is atypical in LitRPGs or web novels as a whole. He might take some getting used to. Character arcs will develop over a long period. What you see now will be different as the main character changes. The start of Getting Hard is slow-paced (more so than others of the genre) and includes world-building and character development before focusing on the LitRPG.
