《Area 51》1.5 Containment Breach

I lay on my back for a while, flinching after every bang of the door. Eventually the red thing seems to have left in search of easier prey, or perhaps it is waiting for me to leave the room. Either way I am not leaving the safety of this room for a while.
I sit up and look about.
“Fuck.”
Leaning on the wall directly behind me is a corpse with a gun in her mouth. Blood stains the walls.
“Just another mess.”
I repeat my mantra aloud.
I suppose it’s a quick and painless way to go, as approved to being eaten alive by aliens.
A cursory observation reveals that the blood is fresh too, she must have killed herself within the last hour.
I’ve cleaned up enough ‘messes’ to know how fresh spilt blood is. While I can’t clean up this mess, but I can at least pay some respect to her.
A check of her clearance card reveals a name, ‘Marlyn Scott’. I remove the gun from Marlyn’s grip and lay her down, then I close her eyelids.
‘I feel a little better after this. I also feel a strong resolve. I will not die down in this fucking pit, like Marlyn. I will not be just another mess, that some poor fucking ‘sanitation technician’ will have to clean up when this is all said and done. No more of this bullshit.’
After a compose myself from emotional outburst I look around, taking in every detail of my surroundings.
The room is quite spartan in appearance. There are four surveillance stations with six unilluminated screens each, along with a single terminal in the center of the room.
In a corner is a water dispenser, and an instant coffee machine. In another corner is a tall healthy houseplant.

Adorning the walls are a few posters, some are posters of what to do in emergency situations, while the majority are landscapes with words of encouragement on them, such as ‘have a nice day!’
I feel a slight bit of jealousy at my surroundings.
‘Why couldn’t I have been a security technician, instead of a fucking janitor. Bullshit.’
They told me I was a natural at cleaning. Whatever, I’ve got bigger things to deal with.
First I search all the drawers, all of them are almost empty aside from documents. The only thing of note that I find a large pair of scissors which I take apart into two blades, they may be useful later.
Then I drink some water because I am really thirsty, I am also starting to get hungry, I will need to go to the break room to pick up some food.
Lastly I try and boot up the surveillance system, but I am a sanitation technician not a technology technician.
I think that whatever caused containment to fail also caused security to fail. Which doesn’t make sense since they are on two different systems, with lots of redundancy.
It isn’t a leap of logic to assume that almost all the other systems compromised too.
It’s clear that there must have been some sort of cyber attack.

Arnar the Dungeon
Arnar is a dungeon core. Everybody knows dungeons are evil, man-eating entities hell-bent on killing and absorbing whatever wanders inside their depths. The problem is no one ever told him that. Well, the truth is no one ever told him anything and he refused powers-that-be when they tried to make him into the proper dungeon. That should teach them not resurrect people into dungeon cores. Now it is too late. He has a perfect plan to become the best dungeon on the continent and nothing will stand in his way. Especially something called common sense. Disclaimer of sorts: I am non-native English writer that used to write mostly for himself. After my last computer decided to die on me taking all my works with it I lost the desire to write for quite a long time. This is my attempt to go find motivation to write again as this was my favourite hobby. The idea is to be held accountable. As for being non-native, I don't believe that should be a major issue as I feel my proficiency in English to be sufficient enough to not be too much of the distraction. That said, be forewarned that the rules governing punctuation are beyond my grasp. All I can do is try not to completely suck at that. As mentioned this is an attempt to motivate me to write again so any message, encouragement or constructive criticism will go long way. Theory of Rifts (LitRPG)
You can join my Discord here. Keynes Kid is gifted with a photographic memory and being several months away from receiving Level 1, and a Talent, he finds himself in the center of attention of people who want to shape his Talent. If they can get him an intelligence related Talent, they will hit a jackpot. The Talent Unlocking ceremony finally comes and Keynes Kid receives… Error… Anomaly (What?) His new talent is… useless. Why then does the World Government want Keynes so badly they will silence anyone who knows about his Talent? At the same time... Somewhere in the Universe, ancient beings stir from their slumber, awoken by the system alert and the wall of glaring red warnings. Their greatest fear just manifested and they are hell-bent on erasing it from existence. -------- It is a slow-development story, so you won't find the MC with super powers at the beginning. -------- It is a coming of age story and focuses on a Talent system (in the beginning) with several additions that bring to the table upgrading of a planet’s tier and such (a bit later). There will be quite an amount of rebuilding society as new, unknown resources enter the economy, and a lot of travelling, delving and naturally, unlocking the secrets of the Universe. As for the setting, the story starts in XXI century, which technology-wise isn't much different from what we have now, but it is enhanced by magic associated with Talents. This allowed the humankind to colonize the solar system, but the technology that allows for interstellar travel doesn't exist (yet). Because it’s my first attempt at LitRPG, please be forgiving but constructive. I hope you will enjoy the story! --- Cover by Daniel Gembus https://www.artstation.com/daniel_gembus instagram.com/danielgembus
