they observe the flag of the fortress, it's too far to identify well, but they somehow manage to.

Algon Lookout: "sir it's a flag I've never seen before, it has a blue rectangle on the top left with stripes alternating from white to red."

Captain Wickens: "hmmm, seems to be an unidentified nation... alright, send some men to talk to them! use a rowing boat!"

Columbus Crewmember 1: "what do you think they look like?"

Columbus Crewmember 2: "They obviously look like us, duh"

they stand near the edge of the USS Columbus, observing the approaching rowing boat, once they arrive, an elevator lowers itself, the natives walk on top of the elevator, confused about how they did this, they later arrive on the deck of the carrier, impressed and confused.
