《T.E.N.T.A.C.L.E.》An Alarming Announcement

Once the teams were armed and provisioned with backpacks full of essentials, the students gathered again for a briefing.
"So more weapons... Does this mean we're going to keep patrolling the city?" Sakura sighed.
"I assume so. It seems super haphazard to ship us weapons after we already cleaned up the city, but it is the government after all," Benzo chuckled.
Just then, the room went silent. The grizzled military man C-team had encountered before strode out to the center of the gym, still wearing his shades despite being indoors at night. He cleared his throat.
"Thank you all for your hard work in the field today. With your help and sacrifice, the city is now much more secure than it was. Our work isn't over, though. the crater in the center of town is still a focal point for these invaders. We have it on good authority that they are coming up through the crater from deep in the earth. It is unclear if the object that crashed into our city simply released them from the earth or if it brought them here to begin with.
He paused, taking time to look over the student body and make eye contact with as many as possible. This was a man who was used to leading people. Taki listened with a sense of foreboding. The way he said "our work" even though he had clearly been riding around town supervising all day. This was also a man who was used to selling people something they didn't want.
The man cleared his throat again. "What I will now ask of you is this: we must take the fight to them. You have new, improved weapons. Please continue the fight by venturing into the crater and fully eliminating this threat."
There was a collective gasp from the class.

"What!?"
"That's insane. That's suicide!"
Teachers and the principle shouted for silence. They didn't get it, but a low murmur would have to do.
The man in shades continued, "We will provide you with the means to survive this. Along with your new weapons, you will also have armor. We will coordinate transportation to and from the Crater as needed. And once this is done, I promise you, we can all go back to our homes and get back to a normal life." He stood aside and allowed the principle to now take the limelight, ostensibly to provide a more familiar face for the remaining detailed instructions.
Before he could speak, however, Natsuki spoke up. "What are teachers doing to combat this invasion?"
"I'm sorry, what was that?"
"The teachers. And really any adults here. What are they doing to help with the fight? What is their civic duty?"
"We, er...well we are helping coordinate..." The principle stammered. He had clearly assumed they wouldn't be questioned on this.
The man in shades stepped back in. "Listen well, everyone: we've all got our jobs to do. The adults - your parents included - are fighting on different fronts and in different ways. We are protecting this country on a national level and coordinating with foreign governments to fight this threat globally. By doing this, you are helping your town and your country. Don't question it - just get it done and you can all have your old lives back."
"One other thing I would like to mention, since some of you have been raised with an unseemly rebellious streak." He glanced pointedly at Natsuki, "Please also keep in mind - we consider desertion treason. If you should decide not to help with these efforts, you will face dire consequences."

"The hell with this," one of A-Team's hot-boy clones stood up and made for the door. "I'm going home - no way I'm crawling into a hole to fight god-knows-what.
BLAM
The tall boy fell to the floor, a bleeding hole in his back. He sputtered and jerked, lying face-down in a quickly spreading pool of blood. Sakura screamed.
The shocked students were silent, mouths agape as they slowly came to grips with what had just happened.
The man in shades holstered his handgun and resumed a poised stance. "As I was saying, desertion is considered treason and, as you are now aware, is punishable by death."
He looked around the room. This time his eye contact was not as friendly.
"See you all bright and early tomorrow morning. Let's all do our best." The man smiled and exited the assembly, carefully stepping over the corpse of the student he had just murdered.

Checkpoint
as an anomaly sweeps the world, many gain strange abilities. as for Mal, the power makes it so they cannot die, or more accurately, they get sent back in time to the last place they were safe at. A power that seems like a blessing until you’re crushed under rubble, drowned in sewage, shot, stabbed, all while having the royalties to feel all the pain from such fates. And to put the icing on the cake, a strange message appeared before everyone’s eyes stating that unless someone breaks down the gate within 17 years, everyone will die”. now Mal needs to find a way to “break down the gate” (whatever the hell that means) or they will be forced to die and revive, only to die again for the rest of time. Which would suck, probably. /————————————————— this is technically a time loop novel. the MC is chaotic neutral with a worryingly lack of care about how their actions affect people. i want to interact with my readers so give critique and suggestions. I will sometimes host polls for the personality for new characters, story decisions, and the ability to cancel annoying characters, besides Mal, if they get enough complaints. I am also impatient and will end decision polls when I want to write more. If no one votes, I choose, so don’t let that happen. if you’re want world building check out hitchhikers guide to checkpoint (an encyclopedia of what I made up with lots more explanation)

The Kodoku Game
In Japanese folklore, there once existed an ancient technique among alchemists for harvesting the strongest poison known to man. A poison so vicious, so horrendous, that a single drop could incapacitate an entire nation of humans, several times over. A poison so intense that a single drop could turn the tides of a war on its head. As potent as it appeared however, this poison could be harvested from the blood of a single insect alone- an insect the alchemist’s called the ‘Kodoku’. As lucrative as was attaining this poison however, the problem lied in identifying this insect- its appearance, shape and size changed from region to region and from continent to continent. Sometimes it took the appearance of a ladybug and other times a horned-beetle. In order to determine the identity of this special insect the alchemists came up with an ingenious method. They created an impregnable jar of clay out of the best sandstone they could find and placed hundreds of different insects into the same jar. The jar was made with such great mastery that it allowed no insects to escape and allowed no objects to enter. The laws of nature dictated that the insects would remain together in the jar forever. However, it turned out that as time went on, the insects’ hunger for food and power caused them to turn against each other- one insect ate another until only one remained. This sole insect contained a poison that far surpassed that of all the others and became stronger as it ate more and more insects. The alchemists at this point had succeeded in identifying the Kodoku and could extract it’s poison as long as they continued to feed it regularly. Although this folklore ends here, the actual story does not. One day, as the alchemists cheered in joy of having identified the Kodoku they so eagerly wanted, they forgot to close the lid on the very jar that was considered to be completely impregnable. This small gap was just large enough for the Kodoku inside to crawl out. Famished from not having been fed for weeks, the Kodoku ended up eating the very alchemists that nourished its growth until not even the bones remained. Yet, the Kodoku’s hunger didn’t seem to subside in the slightest. So it traveled to the next village and began eating whatever it could find there. Its poison made it unparalleled in strength and slowly but surely it began to dwindle down the population of the entire city. Yet its hunger only continued to grow. So it traveled to the next city over and ate all it could there. Very soon, the Kodoku couldn’t find any more food to eat. There was no one left to eat and no one left to spectate. So it stood there, by itself pondering what possibly was left to eat that could satiate its hunger. But there was one thing left that Kodoku realized it had never eaten. Itself.
