《Post-Living》Chapter 24.1: Safeguard

The Chief was tense. Really tense. He stood up, and walked back and forth in the room we currently are in, and Mira and I, of course, looked at him, confused. We didn't know what made him so tense because we basically left him out of our conversation about the things that were troubling their town. It was called "Deku", which is apparently a spirit-possesed plant that is sinister enough to get a body consisting of bones without flesh. Seriously, why not just get an actual human body? That could cause a lot more trouble, not like I want them to.
Mira stood infront of the Chief's big body.. or bone.. or big-boned body. His eyes.. wait, no.. his skull was apparently looking directly at Mira, from what I could tell. I couldn't really determine where he was looking, and simply made a guess. Mira stared at him back, and asked him what's wrong. He eventually sat down, and told us what he was so tense about.
"You chose a bad time to come here.. but.. I hope you can finish the job."- said the Chief, who's definitely hiding something. I don't know what, but it feels.. bad, somehow.
"What do you mean?"- asked Mira. She was determined to finish the quest, and that determination got to me, because the reward of the quest is higher than the last time I saw it. Mira's Rail and mine lit up, and the quest reward suddenly got raised. The Chief saw the flash, and from the looks of it, he was hoping for a miracle.
"Sorry, but I contacted the quest administrators about it. I made the reward higher.. for a reason. I'm sorry, but, you're probably thinking that I need a miracle right now." - Spot on.
"I don't know why, but look over there."- The chief pointed at... nothing. He pointed at a hill. Mira and I looked at him, confused. Well, if that's the case then I guess he's being paranoid at nothing. This is exactly why these quests are the easiest means to get money. Paranoia helps, apparently.

"What..? Why're you looking at me like that?"- said the Chief. You pretty much know why. We're looking at fucking nothing.
"*sigh* Look, do you know why this place looks so deserted? There has been cases of skeletons going missing, and believe it or not, yes, this town operates the same way as your normal towns. Skeletons do not die after a number of years, and therefore, we thought it was only normal. Half a year has passed and not one came back, if anything, the number of the ones living here kept decreasing and decreasing. This is why the town is so deserted. It used to be lively, mind you."- Lively... did he just make a pun? Wait, that's not the main focus here. Skeletons going missing..
"AAAAHHH!"- Mira shouted. It wasn't in pain though, it's basically someone who had an amazing idea and starts shouting Eureka kind of shout.
"That's why.. you're pointing at the hill?!"- She said. This girl is a lot smarter than I am, heh, on this world, of course. She and the Chief have a somewhat scary look on their faces. Sorry, but I can't catch up. What were they talking...... oh... oh wait.. OHH..!
"AAAAAAAAAAAH!"- I screamed, it was like Mira's, in a way. I know what was happening now. I think I know what they're pointing at.
"That hill over there.. is covered in trees."
"So- that means..!"
"We've encoutered a few of those Dekus so far, but we had a hard time fighting one. Tell me, is one of you proficient in the element of Grass?"
"Sorry, but I can only hack and slash. Wait, why didn't you SPECIFY IT ON THE QUEST THEN?!" -I shouted. Why the hell didn't he just contact grass types then?!

"We're a town secluded deep in the middle of the forest. Do you think we have the money to specify the things that we want? Elemental users, or mages, costs more than those physical ones. In order to land on something, I chose random adventurers to make the quest reward on an evenly price. This is the suggested price." - He said, while sweating profusely. Adventurers getting classified based on the rare ability of magic.. It makes sense.
"Wait, really? Then I should get more, Xin!" - Mira said, overjoyed by what the Chief said. Don't tell me she's actually powerful in that element.. No, that would be too farfetched. I mean, maybe she knows a few spells and all.
"Here, look!"- She showed me her Rail..............
......
......
Wait.. seriously? What the fuck?! Her stats...
Elemental Attributes
Fire - 50%
Water - 50%
Wind - 50%
Grass - 50%
Earth - 50%
Isn't 100% the limit?! Then.. she's the same as him.. an Irregular?! How the hell do I keep landing on these talents?! And to top it all off, she's basically an angel! Her limit can go up to 250%, and her elements are all even. That means that she can pull off a fuck ton of spells..!
"Uhhh, Xin?" - She stared at me, while I was busy thinking of the many combinations she can do with her attributes. Look, I played a lot of games. I know what it feels to handle an overpowered character, and she IS one. Aggghhh, how can one person be this blessed.. and I'm stuck here, finding ways on how to die because of this cursed immortality.
"Xin! Hey!" - She shouted, bringing me back to earth.
"Please.. uhmm.. don't die while I'm at it."- Huh..? Of course I won't. I would be more glad if I actually did. I feel like she's hiding something.. but at this point, I've managed to develop something called Ignorance. I couldn't care less.
...Heh, this type of thinking has got me in all sorts of trouble but..
Let's see where it goes.

An astroid miner encounters pirates attempting to commandeer his processing ship, Elizabeth, while he was away responding to other miner's mayday. The miner (Jeffrey Sokolov) and his Artificial Intelligence (Elizabeth - both the ship and AI were named after Jeffrey's late wife,) outsmart the pirates, capture them and bring them back to the Earth/Moon station - where they attempt to turn them over to the Naval ship, Wanigan. However Wanigan is in the process of mutiny. The executive officer of Wanigan sends a small squad of Marines under command of a petty officer. The petty officer realizes an opportunity, convinces Sokolov to join her cause, and together with the AI (Elizabeth) re-take the Navy ship, and restore her captain to command. In order to perform these acts, Sokolov and the ship Elizabeth are drafted into Navy Reserve. The captain of the Navy ship Wanigan re-recruits Jeffrey to act in a secret capacity, he is given an almost unlimited credit, the squad of Marines that came aboard to arrest Jeffrey, and the petty officer. Piracy and corruption are overly common, but Jeffrey, his team and his AI defeat the enemy, only to have it resurface shortly afterward. Aliens from several surrounding regions have found Earth and the solar system to be a rich source of mineral wealth. They secretly tried to manipulate humans to doing their will, and Jeffrey discovered that they were the organizers and force behind the piracy. Jeffrey and the navy take on the new menace, but new tools, including faster-than-light travel become available. Jeffrey and Elizabeth improve on the Navy's technical innovations, incorporate alien technology into their ship, and continue to dominate the region infested with aliens with somewhat superior and somewhat inferior technology. This is the saga of a technically sophisticated man, his smart and loyal artificial intelligence, and the people he surrounds himself with.
