《A Curious Bird》14. Black Mist
Advertisement
A little bird chirps as it hops toward its nest and places a branch in it.
It then examines its nest and began chirping happily. The bird hop into its nest, relax, preparing itself to take a nap.
A black mist suddenly covered the little bird leaving a husk of skin and bones behind. The black mist rushed toward other living beings in the area, covered them, and left husks of skin and bone behind.
There was no life and left in these husks, drools leaking down their mouths, their eyes were filled with one emotion and that was despair.
"Not enough...Not enough..." The black mist form into one humanoid shape with white mists appearing to forms "eyes". The black mist moves its "eyes" to look around, it hungers.
It needed more...MORE! The black mist attacked every other thing in the area that was alive, leaving behind empty husks, eyes filled with despair.
"Not enough...not enough...NOT ENOUGH!" The black mist's humanoid shape broke apart in several other smaller pieces of black mists and began spreading around in different directions.
...
...
...
Aariv was gasping for breath.
He looked around for danger before relaxing and took a deep breath. "Just what was that?" Aariv asks, the fear, no despair that had been installed into him still lingers. He couldn't believe that he felt such despair.
Aariv took another deep breath as he checks his stat.

His [Fear Resistance] had level up to [Moderate Fear Resistance] which was what allowed him to move and fly from whatever was being summoned.
"Just what was that thing..." Aariv mutter. "Most likely some sort of demons based on the blood, dead people, and that guy chanting something." He got up, closing the stats screen as he began looking for prey as he was still hungry.
He snatches a horned rabbit away from a forest fox, just as it was about to pounce on the rabbit and flew onto a branch and ate the rabbit raw. He was too hungry to care.

Right after Aariv finishes eating the rabbit, he started the scan around for prey again. He was still hungry.
After several more hunting of rabbits, Aariv's hunger was finally satisfied, he was leveling up his skills.
Aariv jumps down from a branch, falling down for several minutes, and slammed into the ground, causing them to groan in pain.
[Stoneskin] - Lv. 6 ---> [Stoneskin] - lv. 7
[Pain Resistance] -Lv. 9 ---> [Pain Resistance] - Lv. MAX
"Oh?" Aariv perks up. Not only did [Stoneskin] level up, so did [Pain Resistance]! Though [Blood Armor] and [Barskin] haven't leveled up. "Still that's good, now I ignore the pain of jumping off twenty feet up in the air over and over again," Said Aarivas he got up, brushing dust off his body.
"Time to do that again," Aariv said. He was about to fly up to a branch before he notices something from the corner of his eyes. Curious, Aariv flew toward it and what he saw, disgusted him.
It was a dead goblin that was a husk of skin and bone with a face that was despair and fear.
"Urgh, what happen to you?" Aariv asks as he circles around the corpse, probing it with his talons. He looks around to see more monsters that were also husks of bone and skin with the same look of terror.
"Don't tell me that this has something to do with that demon," Aariv said growing scared. The fact that all of their faces were that of despair and fear seems suspicious since Aariv had felt despair when the demon was being summoned.
He then heard loud screeches. Aariv turns to the noises, his [Danger Sense] going off, to see a fox screeching, stuck in place.
Aariv was unsure as for what was happening using [Appraisal] to try and find what was happening but only got the fox's stats. He then uses the only sight skill he had which was [Mana Sight].
What he saw was a black mist that he could barely see that was covering the fox. When the fox went limp, the black mist left a husk of bone and skin of the fox, its face of despair.
The black mist didn't move and Aariv could hear something that he was sure was coming from the black mist.
"Not enough..."
Aariv tried using [Appraisal] on it only to have a sudden pain coming to his head before it lessens and Aariv looks at the mist in horror.
"[Appraisal] didn't work on it? Don't tell me that it was so powerful that [Appraisal] wouldn't work on it?" Aariv questions. He began backing away as he recognizes the black mist.
However, the black mist was beginning to moves toward him.

The Legion of Nothing
Nick Klein is your average high school geek--if you can still count as average when your grandfather is a retired superhero, and you've been trained in the martial arts by his friend, a mysterious, immortal mercenary. After his grandfather dies, Nick inherits the last version of the Rocket suit, powered armor that allows him to shrug off bullets, smash through walls, and manipulate sound. Along with it comes the base of his grandfather's superhero team including the team's jet and trophies from forty years of fighting criminals and aliens. Together, Nick and his friends, descendants of his grandfather's teammates, attempt to bring back a superhero team that was originally formed during World War 2. Along the way they'll face the normal problems of high school (bullies, homework, and dating), and the less normal problems like supervillians and mysteries leftover from their grandparents' past. As a story, it uses the conventions of all eras of comics from the 1940s on, ranging from serious to silly. If you're hoping for a grim and gritty story, this isn't it. The Legion of Nothing first debuted on my website legionofnothing.com in 2007. In that period it's updated more than 900 times, is still running, and has had millions of pageviews. The first two years have been released as an ebook, receiving good reviews on Amazon and Goodreads. I hope you'll enjoy it, and that you'll review it and comment. You can also vote for it on Top Web Fiction and rate it on Web Fiction Guide. Member of The Order of Phantasmal Architects.

Ars Magica
Our vision comes back into focus. Our eyes, while being able to perceive the immediate surroundings, still leave us with our minds uncomprehending towards what is actually occurring. Sure, there are definitive things that we can focus on, like the fact that we're either out upon the open sea or the open ocean, there not being much of a difference with no land in sight, as well as the fact that we appear to be upon a haphazardly constructed metal boat, whose seams are barely able to keep a hold of themselves in the crashing waves. However, that does not let us understand what exactly is causing the waves in the first place. If we were to rewind time, we'd find ourselves upon a calm sea under a peaceful sky with the only difference, being a small whirlpool that would be the precursor towards this uproar around the boat. Lightning flashes in the sky, with no clouds being near, and anyone actually manning the boat has either died towards the cause of the smashing tides in the first place, or are fighting amongst the flashes of lightning, all while trying not to become devoured, demolished, and utterly decimated by the beast roiling in the whirling waves. To better understand exactly what is happening here, there is one singular event that needs to be understood, that needs to be explained, and that is the arrival of a creature named Dave. Stepping back from current events and going towards this creature's first appearance in the world, we begin to hear the sound of water slowly dripping across rocky ground. The cavern is utterly silent except for this one constant, its cause feeding channels downwards, sloping towards cracks in the rubble along the floor from broken stalagmites and stalactites. And there, lying on top of something which had fallen over recently, judging from its cracks, is a person, the creature named Dave. His form is fast asleep, either from the impact or from an intoxication, judging from the smell upon its breath. A bright light suffuses into it for a second, giving life towards the pale skin, before it slowly dies down back to the comfortable black of the cave that it's within. Before this moment in time, Dave did not exist in the physical world. At least, not in the reality that he finds himself born into. We do not know whether or not his existence is simply a cosmic joke, or something that is being played out on purpose. All that we do know, is that one moment, the body was not in the cave, and simply formed in the next. The actual earliest time that we know Dave exists, is the interpolation of the memories of J-209, which we'll begin looking into shortly to gain context towards the coming narrative that is being written and hastily trying to keep itself written. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Warning: This story has several things which might turn its readers away. The first is that this story has shifting points of perspective. Don't worry about that previous sentence too much though, as the main character will always have a first person perspective associated with them. However, any other character from which we're viewing the story from will either be in third-person, as we are not necessarily in their shoes at the moment, or in first person, given that the narrator is an actual physical presence within the story. For the most part, chapters will be self-contained with their perspectives, so there will not be an abundance of switching perspectives within the same chapter. The most that an average reader would have to worry about is the fact that perspectives can switch between chapters. The second thing is that the main character is a bit on the 'special' side of things. He's not exactly mentally there most of the time, so there will be some times that his personality or his thoughts do not actively align with his actions. The third, and final thing of importance, is the fact that past the first couple of chapters, nothing has been planned in advance. There are arcs and plots that I want to do, want to implement, or have already been set into motion from our main character's introduction to the world, but the method that I use for my story writing and generating leads towards a bit more random chance being enabled. Basically...there's a lot of dice rolling behind the scenes. To not complicate the story further than its regular LitRPG elements, the rolls will not be publicly available. However, there will be knowledge within the author's notes on whether or not there were positive or negative critical rolls that had occurred within the chapter. You have been warned. Updates: Mondays & Fridays (Schedule permitting) Typical Chapter Length: (2,000-3,000)
