《The Cat's Eve》Rest

Eyes flickering open Caelum slowly came too. Heaving himself up he was quickly battered with pain around his chest and slumped back down onto the ground. So, moving right now wasn’t exactly the best choice he thought as he took in his surroundings while sitting.
Having a look around he noticed that several sheets had been taken from the janitor’s closet and put around him. Nice of Leon to do, he thought as he saw that Leon was asleep on the ground a few feet away from him.
He was about to lay back down when he realized he hadn’t seen Atlas. Panic gripping his heart he frantically started looking around until he finally saw Atlas asleep on top of a shelf.
With a sigh of relief, he relaxed, happy to know that they had all survived the encounter with the draugr. Looking back down to head to sleep he noticed that Leon was looking straight at him.
“Um, why are you just staring at me?” Caelum said as he pulled the sheets closer around his body. Quickly turning Leon stammered “I was wondering if you were going to turn into a zombie or something.” His face turned red as he explained.
Caelum stared at him for a few seconds and unable to hold it back burst out laughing. “You thought I was going to become a ZOMBIE??” His laughter continued for a few seconds before he winced at the pain.
Leon turned back and said “Well anything could’ve happened with all this shit going on,” still looking quite embarrassed.
Clutching his chest, Caelum met his eyes and then looked down at his sheets. “Yea… thanks for you know taking care of me while I was out.”
“It was no big deal I mean you did save my life,” Leon said as he sat up. “I’m just happy that I get to live another day… you know looking at the bright side of things.”
After that they remained silent for a little, both replaying what had happened a few hours ago in their heads.
“So, this means I’m not crazy huh, this is all real” Caelum said with a dejected look on his face. “Yep, completely real. It’s almost like we’re stuck in some RPG game isn’t it.”

Leon said trying to lighten the mood.
“It’s really cool, that’s why I picked fighter as my class so I can just beat the shit out of stuff,” he said with a huge grin on his face. “Actually, what did you pick Caelum?”
“I picked rogue just so I could hide from danger," Caelum responded with a little embarrassment. Leon laughed and said “I was actually wondering how you knew to pull me into the closet like that.
Then with the same stupid grin on his face, he continued, “For a second I thought you were trying to hit on me.”
Caelum then threw a broom at his face with as much force as he could.
“I was joking,” Leon said as he rubbed his nose where the broom had hit him. “Anyways how does your class even like work? It was almost like you had a sixth sense.
Caelum then started to tell him about his skills and abilities when Leon interrupted him. “Actually, If you think status and direct it towards me in your head, I can just see it.”
With a look of skepticism, Caelum did as he was told when Leon said “Wow Rogue’s Sense seems so cool. You’re already level three? Jeez, working real hard over here huh.”

“Wait you can actually see my status? Show me yours I want to see” Caelum exclaimed. Leon nodded and seconds later his status appeared in front of Caelum.
Leon Sandoval
Class: Fighter Lv2
Skills/Abilities: [Inferior Balanced Body] [ Basic Combat Proficiency] [Fighter’s Vitality]
Titles: N/A
Quests: [Above and Beyond!]
Focusing on his abilities Caelum was able to find out that a balanced body just made him better on his feet, and that unarmed combat proficiency, just helped him realize how to fight better without weapons.
Fighter’s Vitality was where things got interesting. It made him heal faster after getting out of a battle. Looking at Leon’s arm he noticed that it had already stopped bleeding. In the fight with the draugr, his arm had been badly cut up.

Leon saw that Caelum was staring and once again had that stupid grin on his face. Caelum hated it, they almost died, and he was still smiling. All of Caelum’s emotions boiled over and he shouted “how… how can you be all cheerful WE ALMOST DIED! And the whole reason I’m level three is that I got fucking AMBUSHED BY A MONSTER.”
“It’s like you’re not even taking this seriously!” he added as he felt his anger dying off.
Leon’s smile slid off his face as he turned away from Caelum who was feeling a little embarrassed at his outburst but still peeved off.
“Sorry, I just wanted to make the mood lighter especially since you didn’t even have to save me.” After a short pause, he continued. “I was with three other people when all of this started.
Sighing he stared straight back at Caelum. “We didn’t take it seriously at all, we thought of it as a game. And so, we were being loud and obnoxious when that draugr came probably attracted to all the noise we were making. For all I know I’m the only one who survived.”
"So, yea sorry I’m trying to not think about how were all going to probably die."
Caelum was for a loss of words. He had lost his temper and it caused Leon to remember some terrible memories. Embarrassed he muttered a small sorry. Turning Leon said, “It's ok, you were right I have to be more serious about this whole situation anyway.”
“No, because I was being a complete jerk, acting like I was the only one this system has fucked over,” Caelum said with sadness in his voice. “All because I fought some stupid level one ghoul.”
Leon, let out a gentle little chuckle at that. “Wait so how exactly did you end up fighting a ghoul immediately when you got out of your class selection.”
Caelum explained the entire thing, about how he stepped out of a cottage and minutes later was fighting for his life.
“Wow, that’s rough, thankfully you made it outta there or we would both be dead."
A few minutes of awkward silence passed, and Caelum remembered a question he had when he was fighting both the ghoul and draugr.
“Hey, I have a question, do you know why I can do all these feats I couldn't before. I literally jumped almost three meters in the air, when I’ve never done that before. Its like I have all this newfound energy in me. When I jumped it felt like lightning was coursing through my legs, all while he stared as his arms and legs.
"Honestly, I don't know but I think its mana. The group I was apart of before... the attack had a mage." He explained that she said the feeling of adrenaline experienced probably helped them use their mana instinctively.
All while Leon explained, Caelum tried his hardest to look as if he wasn't feeling too tired, Leon did seem to know quite a fair bit.
Despite his efforts Leon seemed to notice and said, “We should probably head back to sleep though given, you know the battle for our lives we just had.”
Peeking at his phone Caelum saw that it was around 1 am. “Yea you’re right but... what happens next.” Leon said, “well were you heading anywhere before this because I was just chased by a monster the entire day.”
Caelum then told Leon about the announcement someone had made over the intercom and how he had decided to head to the gym. Leon then proceeded to lay his body on the floor and said, “Well then it’s a plan, were going to the gym tomorrow.”
Caelum smiled and rested his head against the floor as he tried to head to sleep. With the thoughts of not being alone anymore, and a clear plan he slowly drifted off to sleep.
That was until Leon started to snore very loudly, but he seemed to stop pretty quickly when Caelum threw a mop at his back.

Synopsis: Issa Pyxis, Spacer orphan and illegal heretic, graduated from living on the streets to running with a gang years ago, but now it looks like that’s all going to change. Her inheritance, more specifically who—or what—she is, is catching up with her, and on a planet with the Emperor’s inquisitors slinking around in every shadow, nowhere is safe and no one can be trusted. What will she do? A cyberpunk story about identity, loneliness, covert infiltration, evil dystopias, and much more! Features: - Cyborgs and cyberpunk galore - This is indented to be somewhat “rational” and “hard” Sci-Fi story - Original Fiction however parts of my worldbuilding are inspired by other Sci-Fi stories (duh) Rationale: The future is cool, AIs are kickass, and questions about consciousness are simultaneously existential and yet unanswered. To me, this story is a vehicle for exploring these topics, and also, I wanted to write a story where the protagonist was unafraid of themselves and where their self is more like a git-repo than a meat computer. Disclaimer: This story primarily takes place in what we’d describe as a “cyberpunk dystopia” with some extra technocracy, autocracy, and religious fervor thrown into the mix, so there will be some “grittiness” in this story. Caveat emptor. Also, [insert your favorite boilerplate “views expressed” disclaimer here]. I shouldn’t need to say this, but the main character and other characters in my story can be wrong on occasion (gasp!) and the way they view the world isn’t always objective truth (if such a thing even exists) nor do their views and opinions necessarily reflect the views of me, the author.
