《17》6. Freedom

12 missed calls from Doctor Rai.

On a scale of 1 to 10, I am as screwed as 17. I've just taken a test for my Calculus class and it ended up taking longer that I intended. I was one of the last students to finish, but overall I think pretty good. I had to turn off my phone because if it rings or even vibrates, I get an automatic fail on my test and I really don't want that. After buying a snack from the cafeteria, I turned on my phone and that's when it blew up with notifications.

12 missed calls from Doctor Rai. 10 text messages from Doctor Rai. 3 text messages from Eva. 1 missed call from Rami. One text message from Spooky. Eva and Spooky's texts were just asking to hang out with them and do stuff with them, but Doctor Rai's messages are what worried me.

GET TO THE LAB NOW!!!

I NEED YOU!!!

DREW PLEASE GO TO THE LAB!!! EMERGENCY!!

Just after seeing those messages, I ran to my car and drove to the lab like I'm on a Fast and the Furious movie -- except extremely careful of course. After anxiously speeding through the streets, I arrived at the research center and my anxiety only went up. I could not even go in the parking structure of the building because there are so many cars blocking its perimeter. More specifically, law enforcement. Cops and government agents.

When I entered, there were people running all over the place. Enoch isn't at the front desk, the securities are arguing with police officers and there are scientists running in hundred different directions. Most are leaving, but are being stopped by cops. My heart beats faster as I make my way to the basement. I need to find Doctor Rai and Lysander.

Luckily, no one had stopped me, as the cops are too busy chasing people wearing lab coats. I tried to remain as calm as possible. However, when a hand grips on my arm and pulls my body inside a room, that didn't work out so well. Automatically, I stomped on the foot of who had grabbed me, causing them to hiss in pain.

I turned to my catcher and was surprised and relieved to find Doctor Rai. "Holy shit. I'm so sorry!" I exclaimed quietly. Right behind him is the werewolf himself, with his eyes scanning me up and down worriedly. "What's happening? Why are there so many cops? What are they doing here?"

Doctor Rai made sure the door is locked. We are on a janitor's closet, which is very low in capacity.

"You need to take Lysander away."

"What?!"

"Drew, please." He begs, touching my shoulders. "The government wants to take Lysander to another lab. With the military. They want to make him a weapon. They are going to do absurd experiments on him that I can't even imagine. They've done it before and it never works. Lysander, he's special. He's a werewolf and the last of his kind and he deserves better than that." His eyes darted back to Lysander. "Whatever happens, they can't get their hands on him."

Breathing heavily, my mind feels as if it is going to blow up. I agree with Doctor Rai. Completely. But it is such a big responsibility and I don't feel like I can do it. I don't know if I can. "What about you? Why can't you take him? You know more about him than I do."

"We don't have much time. You two need to leave right now. They'll find us any minute." Rai replies quickly. "You're not in the system yet. You were only an intern and interns do not have records in the lab, but workers do. We didn't put you in the system yet, so they can't track you. They can track me, find out where I am and everything, but not you. They don't know who you are nor anything about you. The only ones who do is Doctor Maxine, but you don't need to worry about that."

Running a hand through my hair, I took another deep breath and turned to Lysander, who is already watching me. "Okay." I nodded at Rai. "I'll help you hide him, but I'm not sure how long I can do that. It's such a big responsibility and I'm just ... I'm literally just a student, an intern, unlike you who knows exactly what he needs and -- "

"You're so much more. Especially to Lysander. Trust me. Now go!" We all heard footsteps echoing through the halls, outside the little room. Rai pointed at the window that is close to the ceiling. "There. You can get out from there. I've checked already, there's no one guarding that area. You need to leave and go as far away from here as possible! Go!"

Before I could reply, I was pulled towards the back of the room. We both stood by the window. He then all of a sudden gripped on my hips and pushed me upwards, I opened the window and jumped a little so I could get out. I landed on soft grass, thankfully. I backed away a little and watched Lysander also emerge out of the window. I was a bit shock that he actually fit, because he's very fit.

I put on my hood and told Lysander to do the same so that if anyone do see us, they won't easily identify us. "Come on." I grabbed his hand and lead him to my car. We had to be careful because my car had a couple of armed men near it. While they were looking away, I jumped at the driver's seat and Lysander did the same in the seat next to me. Not even bothering to put on my seat belt, I let the engine roar and blast away from the crazy mess of a place.

"Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck." I repeated as I entered the free way, mixing in with other cars. "Fuck." I put on my seat belt and leaned my back against my chair, catching my breath. "I can't believe that just happened. I can't believe I just did that." I slowly eyed the boy next to me. "I just stole a werewolf."
