《My Brother's Best Friend》Chapter 41

Stepping out of the car, Jax and I walk side by side to the front door. His shaking hand rings the doorbell and looks at me with an uneasy smile.

Without hesitation, I take a hold of his hand and interlock our fingers. I immediately feel his body ease up and suddenly the door swings open.

"Hello, Jax," his dad greets him. "Emma, what a surprise."

I throw him a fake smile and let go of Jax's hand to give him a hug.

Bobby had aged a whole lot since the last time I'd seen him. He had a mustache growing in and some stubble around his chin he needed to shave. The wrinkles by his eyes crinkled as he smiled big.

He looked as though he hadn't seen his son in years and actually felt regret for his wrong doings.

"Yeah, it's nice to see you."

He shows us in and I awkwardly hug my body as I admired the inside of the house. The bright white walls didn't have a single crack of paint off the wall.

There was a chandelier right above the entrance and another one right as we walked into the living room.

"Monica is in the kitchen with Chloe," Bobby says. "I'll be right back."

He leaves the living room and rushes into the kitchen around the corner. Jax sighs and runs a hand through his hair causing it to mess up.

"We can make a run for it." I joke, only hoping he would agree and we'd run out of the house before his dad comes back.

"I'm sorry I made you come here. I shouldn't have been so fast to agree. Knowing my dad we'll leave with even more problems and you'll be in the middle of it." Jax tells me.

I shake my head at him. "Don't be so dramatic." Before I knew what I was doing, I bring my hand up to his cheek. "I'm just glad to be here with you."

What the hell was I doing? How was this taking things slow? I wanted to stop myself but I couldn't. I didn't want to ignore my feelings for him any longer.

Smiling down at me, Jax suddenly begins to lean in, closing his eyes and I follow along. Just as our lips were about to touch, Jax's dad and Monica walk in with Chloe.

Jax and I jump away from each other and awkwardly stare at them as they smile at us.

"Emma, it's so nice to see you again." Monica continues to grin.

I walk over to where she was and lean in giving her a kiss on the cheek. I look at Chloe and greet her as well, and soon after Jax does the same.

After Bobby left Jax's mom, Cathy, he got remarried to Monica and bought themselves a house along with Monica's daughter, Chloe.

She grew up constantly being spoiled and it was written all over the way she presented herself that she enjoyed every bit of it. Her shiny necklaces around her neck shined bright and golden blonde hair twinkled in the light.

"Rosa is just finishing up dinner," Monica states. "Please, sit no need to be shy, Emma."

Throwing her a smile, Jax and I take a seat on the white couch and by the look on his face I knew he was ready to leave.

I felt uncomfortable sitting on the couch especially it being white. I feared of making a mess on it even though I had nothing on me.

They were too rich to worry about getting the couch dirty, though. They'd be able to replace it the second a feather gets on it.

"So, tell us," Monica beams as she sits down with Bobby and a shy Chloe on the couch across from us. "How long have you guys been dating?"

Jax and I look at each other and back at Monica with a startled look. I wasn't expecting her to be asking that and I'm sure Jax wasn't either.

Was it that obvious we had so much history?

"Oh, no," I let out a nervous laugh. "We're just friends."

"Ha, that's what they all say, right Jax?" His dad throws him a wink.

"Mhmm." He mumbles, pressing his lips tightly.

"Are you graduating with Jax this year?" Bobby looks at me.

"No, I'm only a junior." I tell him. "I still have another year."

"What are your plans after high school?" He asks.

"Dad." Jax says, his voice coming out harsh.

"I'm just asking a simple question." He defends.

"I don't really know yet." I awkwardly say.

"You better start planning soon. Before you know it you'll end up like this one here," he points to Jax. "Without a clue on what to do."

"Bobby." Monica plants her hand on his lap.

"Dad, stop." Jax warns.

"Let the girl speak, Jax." He says without taking his eyes off of me.

"Yeah," I nervously laugh. "I mean, I'm sure whatever Jax plans on doing will work out just fine."

"Not if it doesn't make him money to support himself." Bobby says, keep a straight face.

I was waiting for the punch line. I was hoping the man in front of me was going to bust out laughing and say he was sorry for being so rude he just wanted a good laugh. But nothing came.

"Have a little faith." I try to keep my cool.

"It's fine, Emma." Jax says.

"Faith isn't going to make you successful."

"Rosa!" Monica calls out. "Is the food ready?!"

There was an awkward silence before Bobby stood up from his spot on the couch and walked out of the room. Chloe ran after him along with Monica and moments later there was hushed yelling coming from where they were.

Jax and I sat there in silence not knowing the right words to say.

I never expected Jax's dad to act the way he just did. I always knew Jax hated him for leaving his family but the man that I was just talking to was so different from when I knew him.

I used to go over his house and he'd buy us ice cream and watch movies with us. He was like a second father to me. I barely recognized him anymore.

"I'm so sorry." Jax finally spoke.

"It's not your fault," I respond. "I'm glad you didn't turn out like that."

He smiles at me. "I don't think other than me anyone has ever stood up to him like that. You were challenging him and he hates that."

"Look like dinner should be interesting." I grin.

Chuckling, he scoots closer to me and moves my hair out of my face. Without wasting a second, he presses his lips against mine and pecks my lips.

"I've been wanting to do that for so long now." Jax whispers against my lips. "It's been too long without you."

"Why don't we get out of here?" I suggest as we lean our foreheads against one another.

He sighs. "You know I would if I could." He moves away but squishes my cheeks together and kisses me once more.

"I know," I groan. "It's fine."

"Come on," He stands up and reaches his hand out for mine.

Taking it, I hide a smile and we walk hand in hand into the dining room. The maid, Rosa, was placing plates around the table and Jax and I take a seat next to each other.

"I'm starving." Chloe comes running in and sits across from us.

Bobby and Monica follow along and sit down at each head side of the table.

Once Rosa finishes preparing the table and setting the food, Bobby clears his throat and looks at Monica. They seem to be having a private conversation with their eyes as they look from Jax and I.

"So," Monica smiles. "Jax, your father and I actually invited you to share some news."

"Oh, it wasn't to repay him for helping his son out?" He says sarcastically.

"No." Bobby replies.

"Emma, we are just as happy to be sharing this with you." Monica claps her hands together. "I guess there's no other way to say this...I'm pregnant."
