《Hot Chocolate》chapter twelve, meet the group.

Last night and this morning were great, but I know the dream will end when we walk into school.
And it did.
"Hey guys."
"What's up?"
"Nothing much."
My best-mate, Matthew, was waiting in the social area when I walked in with Camila. I want to leave but I know she wouldn't come with me, so I waited with the rest of the class until the bell rang, listening to Matt make small talk with her.
We entered biology and she gave me an apologetic smile as she sat beside one of our old friends, Lucy.
I sat behind her, and to my delight, Matt was seated next to me.
I listened to the teacher discuss plants or something while I scribbled on the back of my notebook. When Cami said we had 'first, third, fourth and six period' together I thought we'd actually spend them together. But nope.
We briefly said 'bye' when I left for my second class but she seems so distant at school. We'd always talk and sit beside each other when we were just friends, why should it be different now?
I spent second class talking to Katie. It's kind of weird because although we've messed around I wouldn't even consider it again, and I haven't had a single thought about her.
"Is she with Matt now?"
"What?"
"Camila."
"No- I don't know actually."
"Have you told her?"
"Told her what?"
"Do I have to spell it out for you?"
"No. I don't and I'm not going to."
"Ok, just don't take it out on Matt."
"I'm not..."
"I saw the death stares you were sending his direction. He hasn't done anything, he's just talking to her because you're letting her slip away."
"Since when do you give me relationship advice?"
"So you're admitting you want one!"
"No I- you don't get it, just leave it alone."
"Maybe I don't, but I've been rooting for you two since she moved here freshman year. And I've already assigned myself as a bridesmaid at your wedding."
I scoffed and turned back to the board, watching Mr O'Brien scribble down some Spanish verbs.
She is right about Matt, he hasn't done anything bad, but I know he's not the one for Camila.

The bell rang and Katie and I made our way to the benches outside in hope that we'd bump into the others.
But we didn't.
I searched for her as we walked into Calculus, just to spot her with Matt once again, the two of them at the back of class, whispering and smiling.
I sat on the other side of her, Katie sitting down beside me, filling up the back row.
"Hey, you alright?"
"Yeah..?" Cam said like it was something obvious. "You?"
"Mhm." I nodded, sinking into my seat.
Matt leant back on his chair and I kind of wished he fell.
"Hey DeMarco, you hear Joey's back?"
"Oh, cool."
Matt, Joey and I were quite the trio when we were younger, before I met Camila. We were the messers in middle school, the inseparable trio. Matt tried to keep us together but we all went our different ways, I started sports and made new friends, Joey started using and Matt- just became weird.
"He's still grounded but he has to choose between rehab or school so."
"Well, you can't smoke in rehab." All eyes turned to the completely stoned looking kid walking into the room.
"My boys!" He sat backwards on the chair in front of Camila so he was facing her. "Hey, La-La."
"What's up, Joey?"
"Not much, you know, 'parents are a bust but yolo... Hey, Kitty-kat, you had fun the other night."
"Wish I could remember it." Katie gave him a fake smile.
"That's the best part."
"Quite down please." The teacher rushed in, "open your textbooks to page 34."
*
Third and forth period consisted of Matt chatting with Camila, Joey flirting with Katie who was having non of it, and me almost falling asleep.
We sat in the cafeteria for lunch. I only picked at my food and listened to Matt attempt to talk to Cami but act cool in front of Joey at the same time. God, it was painful.
It's humorous how dysfunctional our friend group is. Though I doubt you can even call it that anymore.
I looked around to table, almost laughing to myself. We've gone from being an average friend group with everything in common to people who can barely form an all-inclusive conversation.

We've got Camila - the pretty, artsy, blonde. Katie - the popular, sporty, bitch. Joey - the constantly stoned, head in the clouds kid. Matthew - the desperate, try-hard, burnout. And me.
Our lunch table looks like the cast of a coming-of-age 80's movie.
Joey began telling us about what happened after the party, complaining about his parents.
They're actually nice people. He used to be close with them, but something changed and he started taking drugs or vice versa.
"I don't know how they didn't catch me sooner, I hid them under their noses - literally. If they sniffed they would have been as high as me..."
*
I almost fell asleep in fifth period, but the class is so boring they didn't even notice.
The bell rang for my last class and I packed up quickly in hope that I could catch Camila before it. I noticed her in the hall and snook up behind her, placing my hand on her shoulder, "Boo."
"Theo!"
"What's up?"
We entered the classroom and sat at the back of the room. "You busy after school?"
"Nope, you can come over if you want."
"Is Zo home?"
"She won't be after 5, she's taking the night shift and won't be home until like 3am."
"I'll be there." I winked.
She rolled her eyes, "you're going to get us caught, someone's going to notice."
"I'm not- you are. You do know that us not speaking is weird, people will notice that."
"We're talking right now."
"But we-" I was interrupted by a group of students and the teacher pouring into the classroom.
I scribbled a note on a random page from my book and passed it to her.
I'll be over at 6, wear red plz ;)
She scoffed and gave me a small smile before flipping it over and writing back.
Come at 7, I'll wear whatever I want thnx ;)
I've barely spoken to Theodore. Every time I see him he's talking to Katie, and as much as I love her, I know they had a busy summer together, and it makes me insecure as shit.
I spent the morning with Matt. He asked me if I wanted to go for coffee after school while pulling that pleasing smile so I couldn't say no. Theo saying I didn't need Matt played over and over in my head. I know he doesn't want me to be with him, but I can't help but get along with Matt.
I was sauntering down the hallway to my next class when a felt a heavy hand on my shoulder, and for a second I had to guess which one of them it was. Which made me realise how dangerous this situation is.
"Boo."
"Theo!"
"What's up?" We sat down at the back of our next class. "You busy after school?"
I can't tell him about Matt. I might tell him afterwards but I can't tell him now. Plus, I'm only going for an hour after school...
"Nope, you can come over if you want."
I'm playing a risky game here but I can't help myself. I want them both. Theo's my best friend and makes me feel amazing physically. And Matt's so sweet, who's respectful and makes me happy.
"Is Zo home?"
"She won't be after 5, she's taking the night shift and won't be home until like 3am."
I lied, Zoe's already in work. But I'm hoping Matt will bring me home before 5 so Theo won't have to know.
"I'll be there." He winked.
"You're going to get us caught, someone's going to notice."
"I'm not- you are. You do know that us not speaking is weird, people will notice that."
"We're talking right now."
"But we-" our conversation was interrupted by students and the teacher pouring into the classroom.
I watched him rip paper from his book and scribble on it, folding it before stretching his hand to me and passing me the note.
I'll be over at 6, wear red plz ;)
Cheeky bastard. It's better to be safe than sorry, and I have homework to do too...
Come at 7, I'll wear whatever I want thnx ;)
"You need a ride home?" He whispered.
I shook my head, praying he doesn't ask who's bringing me, and thankfully he didn't.
I purposefully lost Theo in a crowd of people after class, stalling myself in hope that he'll drive off and not see me get in the car with Matt.
"Hey."
"Jump in."
