《Bride》Chapter 32

Screams from the living room reach my room. I feel like I recognise the voice screaming. It's so strange. Gabrielo is walking into the room and has a smile on his face.

- What's wrong? I asked, stretching.

- There's quite a scene going on downstairs. You should come and have a look," he suggested, giving me a quick kiss.

- Is it that good?

- Come and see! You won't regret it.

I follow him downstairs to find pieces of glass everywhere on the floor.

- A fool and an ingrate! That's all you are!

What's going on here? The screams only get louder, not to mention the sounds of objects hitting the walls. James' father is standing in the middle of the room with a huge pile of dishes. James runs across the room and his father throws everything he can get his hands on at him.

He runs out of dishes and James sits down on the couch without saying anything. His father grabs him by the collar before letting go and pacing around. He sighs and settles into an armchair nearby.

- Before sleeping with Alexia, you should have thought about it," his father growls. Think about the consequences of your actions before you act! James, you're already 26 for God's sake!

- I'm sorry," he murmured with his head down.

- I'm not the one you should be apologising to.

- I already apologised to Alexia when she decided to leave.

- You ruined her life!

- And who told you that? Alexia?

- She had a child at 18," James' mother exclaims as she enters the room. Do you think having a child with her was a good decision?

James' point of view

It was her choice. She wanted a child. She told me that before she even slept with me. This child was planned. The only problem is that nobody knew about it. And I'm the one who takes the blame for any misery that happens to those around me.

I'm at fault, it's true. Except that she wanted this child.

I told her I didn't want to take care of a child. Alexia was clear in her answer. She wasn't going to involve me any more than that if I wasn't ready.

- You don't know anything," I mumbled, standing up.

I meet Alma's gaze, huddled in her husband's arms. She looks at me coldly before looking away.

She has every right to hate me after what I did to her. I was wrong. I wanted to apologise in the past, but she wouldn't listen. I made a mistake. I should have walked away from Mila when I noticed my feelings for her, but I couldn't. I couldn't abandon Mila.

I couldn't abandon Mila who had sacrificed everything for me as my best friend and girlfriend. The saying "Quiet relationship, perfect relationship" is totally wrong. I knew this and I wanted to believe it.

The way people look at us makes us act right. Living in hiding is the best way to go elsewhere. Now I've destroyed everything, my relationship, my best friend, even my career. I leave the mansion before going home.

I open the wine cellar and bring several bottles with me. Some time later, I hear my mother's voice calling me before she storms into the living room.

- James, what are you doing? she shouts, pushing the wine bottles away from me.

- Leave me alone. I'm begging you, just today.

- You think after what you've done you can afford to drink like you're celebrating good news?

- And you think you can afford to berate me now? I did everything I could to keep my promise. I've opened a stable investment business, I'm bringing in money all the time and people envy you! Isn't that what you wanted?

- James, have some respect for your mother," my father threatens, banging his fist on the table.

She's right and you know it.

- Why should I apologise to anyone? You made me this way! Have you ever apologised?

- I didn't make you like this," my mother yells.

- Didn't you? You're the one who told me to get on with it and that the end justifies the means in some cases. The only thing you were looking at was the results so why did you decide to change now?

A heavy silence settles over the room, I pick up my bottle of wine before leaving the house. If it were up to me, I would have thrown myself off a bridge. The only problem is that a funeral is expensive. And I'm sure I'll be criticised for being a coward.

I've done my best to keep my head on straight, but I feel I've reached my limit. No amount of apologising will erase what I've done and it's weighing heavily on my conscience.

I'll just wait for my time to come.

My phone starts ringing in my pocket. I drink my glass of wine and pick it up. Alexa.

- What can I do for you? I asked without bothering to greet her.

- James, are you sure you don't want me to talk to your mother. She's going to want you dead for something that's not worth it," she insists for the umpteenth time.

- Alexa, stop worrying about it. I'll just add the money she mentioned on top of your child support.

- No, you don't have to do that. What you already give me is plenty. James, stop being stubborn and listen to me. You know that-

- Nothing at all, Alex.

- James!

I sigh, waiting for her to start talking again.

- Why do you always take the bad part? I know you have your faults, just like anyone else, but you also have your good sides.

- Because it's easier that way. Nobody expects anything from me.

My mother has no hope for me. My father has given up and doesn't even try to tell me anything anymore.

And to think that all this started after an argument I had in college.

- I'm going to have to go," I said to Alexia. Was there something else you wanted to tell me?

- Matheo said he wanted to see you.

- I'll come to you myself as soon as I have time," I assured her before hanging up.

Alma

It's time for the big departure.

After yesterday's circus between James and his father, it's time to go home. Cordelia is already in the car with Gabrielo getting ready to leave. I have just said a tearful goodbye to my grandmother, my brother and Alexia.

Amber and Steven have been gone for a week in New York. Home seems so far away. Gabrielo has decided to fly home on a private jet for comfort and I wouldn't say no. Staying in the same position for a while is becoming difficult and having swollen legs is bad enough. The journey is getting long, especially now that I'm five months pregnant.

I'm so excited to find out if we're having a boy or a girl. Cordelia starts to move next to me. She's been sound asleep since take-off. I stroke her hair while waiting for Gabrielo to come back with food. The jet has already been in the air for two hours and I'm getting hungry. He comes back with a snack since it's still not time to eat.

- Alma, what are we going to do with Cordelia?

- What do you mean? I asked with a frown.

- How are we going to raise her with our own children? In what way?

- Like siblings, letting them know they're not related by blood. It's probably not going to happen, but she could fall in love with one of our children. If it's mutual, I want them to know that they don't have to hide their relationship. Just that I would never leave them alone in a room past a certain age.

- That's a good idea. I hope they get on well and don't mind talking to us about their problems. We're here to help them after all," he says, kissing my cheek.

- I'm so excited to see the baby," I sighed. I just wish I could avoid the painful part of giving birth.

- Life isn't that easy," Gabrielo replied, laughing softly. It's just a matter of being patient and brave.

Gabrielo's phone rings and he answers a video call. I stay close to him and Cole appears on the screen. He waves to us along with Meavy, both of us grinning from ear to ear.

- I hope you didn't sleep together at our place," Gabrielo threatens without waiting. Especially you, Cole.

- We didn't do anything," Cole exclaims.

- At least not at your place," mutters Meavy.

- Meav', I heard you. We'll talk about this when I get there," I say, watching her squirm behind the screen.

- Anyway, we wanted to tell you," Cole continues.

- We finished the baby's room! Meavy announces. Hurry up and come in, we've finished Cordelia's and Max's too. Not to brag, but we did an amazing job.

- We're going to hurry up to come and see so stay at home," Gabrielo enthuses.

- And stay for dinner, I'll be cooking for the occasion," I added.

- Yes!" they both exclaim over the phone.
