《Kings of Hawkings [bxb]》Chapter 16

Most of the day passed and Hugh was still pouting. Jonas was chuckling every time he saw the sour face. "Why are you upset? It was my ass that's on display, not yours."
"I'm going to find who ever took that picture and break their hands." He grumbled as he was finding and outfit for tonight.
Jonas chuckled as he looked at the forum and the many guys complimenting his ass. He thought he should be embarrassed but he didn't care that much. The guys at Hawkings were basically family at this point. And everyone knew that he and Hugh can kick their ass if they dare tired to use the picture against him.
Jonas shifted through the clothes, indecisive. "What's the dress code for tonight. I don't have too many button downs and maybe one tie."
"Button downs and ties? It's just a family dinner. As long as you wear clothes, you're fine." Hugh rolled his eyes and then paused seeing the seriousness on Jonas' face. "Shit, haven't you had a casual dinner with a friend's family?"
Jonas rubbed the back of his head. "Plenty of times, but every interaction is a business deal, or an opportunity to build and maintain connections." He held up a black button down shirt and looked it over. "So no tie? Or casual like a polo?"
"Casual like jeans and a t-shirt, you wierdo. Seriously, what the hell is wrong with St. Vincent's?" He reached into Jonas' closet and pulled out a couple of items and tossed them to Jonas.
Jonas gave the clothes a hesitant look but gave in and pulled a black t-shirt over his body and slipped on the close fitting jeans. He grabbed an earring that wasn't as long as the one that Hugh was wearing, but it still dangled.
He raised his arm, indicating that Hugh needed to approve of his look. He grinned. "You look sexy, sweetheart. And stop worrying. No connections or business. This is just my parents giving you some food and them sharing embarrassing stories about me."
Jonas smirk. "Oh yeah, like what?"
Hugh groaned. "Forget I mentioned anything. You bring it up, I'll choke you with your only tie."

They arrived to a large house on Hugh's motorcycle. Jonas eyed the house with curiosity. Hugh's family obviously had money and lived close to the school, but Hugh still wanted to live in the dorms. In fact, he felt that Hugh could have attended St. Vincent's. He felt grateful that Hugh never bothered with being a socialite though. Both of them could not be molded into Elite society.
Hugh looked at him hesitantly. No one had seen his home before and he always worried that he would be judged for it. "Dad's a lawyer. Does pretty well for himself."
Jonas nodded, not phased by the money, but then faltered remembering Hugh's last name and a lawyer's name that was used like a curse in the Spencer household.
"Alex Richards?" He asked. His father would condemn Alex Richards whenever he had a chance. He always made life difficult for people at St. Vincent's and could never be paid off. Jonas' favorite family dinners including hearing stories how Alex Richards screwed some socialite with his no nonsense attitude.
Hugh nodded and gave him a questioning look.
Jonas grinned. "My father hates your dad. That makes your dad one of my favorite people."
Hugh laughed and wrapped his arm around Jonas' shoulders. "My dad's going to flip that I'm bring a St. Vincent's boy home."
Jonas rolled his eyes. "Ex-St. Vincent's boy."
They were laughing as Hugh opened the door and dragged Jonas inside. "Mom! Dad!"
Jonas was surprised to see a small red head woman come running to the door and jumping on Hugh. Hugh laughed and hugged her, using the momentum to lift her off the ground. "Hey mom."
She stepped back and looked him up and down. "Hugh, dear, you have gotten bigger?"
Hugh slapped Jonas' shoulder. "If it's because I'm fatter, Jo and Travis' cooking is too good for my waistline. If it muscle, just know this mass of muscle makes me go to the gym with him. Either way, it's Jo's fault."
She chuckled. "You look good and healthy, dear." She turned and smiled warmly at Jonas. "You must be Jonas. It's so nice of you to join us."

He stuck out a hand. "Thank you for having me over, ma'am."
Hugh laughed. "Ma'am? Seriously who are you?"
Jonas punched him in the arm. "I'm being polite, you idiot."
Hugh's mom's eyes gleamed when she saw their interaction. "No need for that 'ma'am' nonsense, just call me Lily. Alex is taking things out of the oven right now. Call him Alex as well. He would cringe being called 'sir'."
Jonas smiled. "Thanks Lily. Hugh has been bragging about your cooking so I have been looking forward to this."
"Oh you flatterer." She pulled Jonas into a hug. Jonas stiffened and then relaxed in the arms of the smaller woman. This caused Hugh to smile happily.
A tall blonde man came around the corner with a smile. "Hugh!" He hugged Hugh warmly.
The man extended a hand to Jonas, while handing a glass of wine to Lily. "Alex."
Jonas grinned. "Jonas."
"Jonas? You look familiar." His face turned stoney. "Spencer? Are you Clark's boy?"
Jonas looked a little embarrassed. Hugh was about to speak up and defend him but Jonas stopped him by placing a hand on his shoulder. "Despite my best efforts to change that, unfortunately I am."
Alex and Lily gave him a concerned look. Jonas rubbed the back of his head nervously. "He won't agree to my requests for emancipation. I even tried to go straight to the courts, but was shut down. So I just need to wait until I'm 18."
"Emancipation? You're trying to disown them?" Alex asked and Lily had a distressed look on their faces. Hugh sighed sadly because he knew that Jonas was trying for a while. He was there when Jonas got the decline from the courts, knowing that it was his father who stopped it.
That day Jonas spent half the day beating the hell out of the punching bag until he collapsed.
"I figured waiting will work too. He's out of the city for a year, so that makes life a bit easier." Jonas explained with a small smile.
Alex looked perplexed at how relaxed Jonas was talking about the situation. "Well, if you need any help or legal direction, consult me."
Jonas looked almost relieved. "I do have a situation I want to ask about, but after dinner if you still have time"
"Of course. Though I am quite surprised to be helping a St. Vincent's boy." He said with with a laugh.
Hugh snorted. "Ex-St. Vincent's." Repeating what Jonas just said outside.
Alex looked down at Jonas's wrist and saw the crown tattoo. "Hugh has said a lot of good things about his roommate, and new King of Hawkings. That also makes you family here."
Jonas shuffled a little and smiled. "Thank you, Alex."
Hugh grinned and wrapped his arm around Jonas again. "Wow. Thats the second time I have seen him look so shy. He didn't even blush this morning when he was bare-"
Jonas slapped him on the stomach. "Are you asking for a spar, Hugh?" Jonas growled.
Hugh's parents exchanged a confused look but Hugh quickly changed the subject. "Jo is an admirer of yours, dad."
"Oh? You're interested in law?"
Jonas shook his head. "I'm better fighting with my fists than words. I just enjoyed seeing someone stand up against the pretentious elites, including my father."
Alex laughed. "It's nice knowing my work is appreciated. I gather you don't like St. Vincent's all that much."
"That's the understatement of the century." Hugh laughed. He looked around. "Where's Lucy?"
"She's upstairs." Lily called out, "Lucy!"
Jonas noticed he was close to the stairs and moved a little bit away and behind Hugh. This allowed Hugh to become the buffer between her and a new male, but it also gave her space to make sure she she did not feel boxed in. Alex noticed the subtle movements and was grateful for Jonas' awareness around his daughter.
A petite redhead sneaks out of her room and and looked down over the railing, beaming at her brother but was shifting nervously. Her eyes turned towards the new figure, who was giving her space and not looking directly at her. She let out a sob. "Jo?" She asked tentatively.
Jonas jerked his head towards her and saw the familiar girl.

But when he wakes up one morning to find himself trapped repeating the same day, he has to overcome his challenges all on his own. This story is an adaptation of a D&D campaign I ran but never was able to complete. I tried to capture the feel of a table-top RPG session —tropes and humor— without relying on the mechanics. This is not a litRPG or gamelit story and no D&D mechanics or system appear in the game. It follows one member of an adventuring party as he deals with the problems with that arise from being an adventurer. Namely, getting roped into adventures. The story has a time loop element, but will eventually move past that. This story explores the magic systems, the history, and the lore of the world through the lens of Tal's entries in his Spellbook and interludes from other written works in the world. New entries on Mondays Credit to JackOfHearts for the cover.
