《A Bully's Regret》Chapter 13

"Wow," Amelia breathed when Grace had finished telling her the sorry tale.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"I was embarrassed," she told her. "Here I was promising that I would never forgive Harrison, only to crumble with a few weeks of him flashing me his pretty boy smile."

"Have you talked to Harrison about this since you've been back?"

"No," she huffed. "And I don't want to. He's tried to bring it up a couple of times but it's too painful to talk about. I know he's different now but if I think about those last few weeks again it'll break me."

"I think you should talk to him. I don't know why he did what he did but there has to be more to the story."

"How could she have known about Harrison asking me to prom if he hadn't told her?"

"I don't know," Amelia shook her head "but I do know that that man is in love with you."

She blew her breath out in disbelief. "C'mon," she scoffed.

"Grace, a few years ago, Harrison came to me and apologized for his behavior. He told me that he always had a thing for you and wanted to see if I could put him in touch with you."

"What?" she breathed in shock.

"I refused. After highschool, he and Jessica continued a thing for about a year, maybe more. They were never serious but I always saw him hooking up with different women every time we saw him on a night out. I just thought he was a manwhore and there was no way I would give your number to him.

He told me that he was serious about you, started waxing some poetic shit about how you were the one who got away. I was shocked. Especially seeing the way he treated you all those years. I still refused and told him why.

Well, color me shocked when he cut ties with Jessica, cleaned up his act and attended college. I watched him for a year before becoming friends with him. For one year I watched that man not even glance at another woman. Slowly he started being friends with Liam before we became close as well. I swear to God, Grace, I have never seen Harrison with another woman since I've become friends with him."

Grace sat heavily down on the couch next to her. She was speechless.

"When Liam proposed, I immediately started planning my wedding. That's when Harrison came up with the idea of this school reunion. He wanted to recreate prom for you. He told me that he had really wanted to go with you but that he didn't have the guts to ask. He never told me about your connection for those few weeks. He roped me, James and Ruth into helping him. You were always going to be working with him when you arrived back in Langley. You were right to be suspicious. I was never in the committee," she confessed guiltily.

"The plan was always to get you two alone and talking. I promised that I would do that and the rest was up to him to woo you."

Grace stared a hole into the cream coloured carpet. She couldn't believe it. All of this was to get her attention? To get her close to Harrison? She had been so wrong about a lot of things regarding Harrison - could she have gotten their friendship wrong all those years ago?

But how did Jessica know? She knew that Harrison had said something to his clique all those years ago to stop bullying her. That was why Jessica had remained quiet for those few weeks but also couldn't resist throwing her daggers whenever they had crossed paths.

So Jessica must've been following his lead but to guess right down to his comment regarding prom? How did she find that out if not through Harrison?

"You can stare blankly at the floor all day, but there's only one person who can give you the answers to your questions." Amelia gently said.

Harrison. She had to see him. Now.

As Grace pulled up outside Langley High she took a deep calming breath. She had first gone to Harrison's house but after knocking for a few minutes she realised that he was either ignoring her or he wasn't home. She was betting on the latter.

She tried calling him but it had gone straight to voicemail. Once she calmed down enough to think, she realized that there was only one other place he could have gone to - the school hall where the reunion was to take place tonight. The reunion that was manufactured for her benefit. Talk about pressure.

As she walked up the steps of the familiar building she could already see how amazing they had transformed the hall. The hardwood floor was covered in black coloured carpet and a red carpet ran on top for a few meters. Tables were being set up sporadically with beautiful gold coloured chairs to accompany them. The stage at the front had a beautiful banner that read 'Casino Royale". She could see that a live band was going to be setting up soon. It wasn't finished yet, but she could see that it was going to be beautiful.

"Grace!" Ruth approached her with a soft smile. "I wasn't sure if you would be coming."

"Word travels fast, huh?" she smiled, wryly.

"Any drama that happens on Main Street would have reached Levin within an hour."

"Figures. So where is he?" She couldn't see Harrison among the throng of people bustling about.

Ruth gestured towards the stage. "Came plowing through here, ignoring everyone. He's been squatting in the back room ever since."

"Thanks, Ruth. I'll have a chat with him."

As she moved towards the stairs leading up to the stage, Ruth called out, stopping her.

"He loves you, you know." she said quietly. "Give him a chance. At least to explain."

Grace nodded that she had acknowledged what Ruth said but she wasn't making any promises. She needed to talk to Harrison first.
