The Surrogate

The next morning as he was getting ready to leave for work he could tell she was worried, so going over he hugged her. "Hey, everything is going to be alright."

She rested her head on his shoulder, it tore her apart just thinking of what Joyce was putting him through. "I'm afraid of what Joyce will do. I knew it was a mistake moving in here, now she can use me as an excuse to hurt you. It's almost as if she hates you, why would she hate you so much?"

He placed his hand on the side of her face and lovingly caressed her cheek with his thumb. "I guess it's not all her fault. I was never in love with her and I think maybe she knew it. I tried to love her the way a husband should and I think she was hurt and over the years it built up. Now she wants to make me pay, wants me to suffer. I don't care what she does to me, but she better not try to hurt you."

"It's not me you need to worry about, it's you."

"I can handle whatever she dishes out. I'm sorry, but I really have to get to work. I want you to rest and not worry. I love you," he said, giving her a kiss before leaving.

His morning rounds at the hospital kept him busy until lunchtime. When he got to his office he sat down and called his lawyer and discussed with him about the papers he received from Joyce's lawyer.

"I want you to get this thing rolling and I want it over with as soon as possible." After talking with his lawyer for over half an hour he hung up. Now all he had to do was wait to hear back from him as to when they can go in front of the judge.

Christy knew that he had a busy schedule and was worried that he wouldn't take time to eat lunch. So she made up something and decided to take it to the hospital. When she got there his receptionist told her to go right in.

Cole looked up when he heard a light tap at the door and in walked Christy. His face lit up as he got to his feet. "Now this is what I call a pleasant surprise."

"Something told me that you wouldn't take the time to grab lunch so I thought I would bring you something."

As soon as she placed the bag containing his lunch she was pulled into his arms.

"That's so thoughtful of you, and to be honest I could sure use something to eat. But first I want my kiss."

Just one touch of her lips stirred the desire in him. He shoved the articles on the desk over to the side and lifting her up sat her down and got between her legs as he continued kissing her. He then moved his lips leaving a trail of kisses over her chin and onto her neck. His member grew hard when he heard the soft moans coming from her mouth.

"Oh God, I'm so sorry Dr. Mason," his receptionist said when she walked in and caught them.

He stopped kissing Christy when he heard Terry. He cleared his throat and took a step back. "What is it?"

"Mr. Fuller is on line two," she said and closed the door behind her.

He took one look at Christy whose face had turned red and knew she was embarrassed. "I'm so sorry about that. It's not like her to just walk in, I don't know why she didn't buzz me on the phone. Just let me answer this call and then you can share my lunch with me."

She got off the desk and went over to the window and looked out. She had never been so embarrassed in her whole life and was worried that Terry might spread gossip around the office which she was sure wouldn't be good for his reputation.

Moments later he hung up the phone and walked over to where she was standing. "Please don't worry about her walking in on us."

"How can I not worry? What she caught us doing was very inappropriate and what if she tells everyone about it?"

"So what if she does?"

"Cole, you're going through a divorce. If people find out that we were making out in your office Joyce could use it against you."

"No one here at the hospital even likes Joyce and I'm sure that they are glad she's going to be out of my life and theirs. She was always so rude to the staff and the other doctors I work with. Now come on, let's eat before I have to get back to work."

Giving him a smile she sat down with him and opened the bag and took out his lunch, but she still had this nagging feeling that what they were doing would eventually be held against him.

"Now that was delicious, thank you so much for making it and bringing it to me. Now how are you getting home?"

"I came in a taxi so I'll just take one back."

"I think it's time we get you a car."

"I don't need a car, at least not until after the baby's born and that way I can take him to his doctor's appointments."

Even though she said she didn't want one he was planning on buying one for her so that she can get around and not have to depend on other people or public transportation. "As much as I've enjoyed this I really have got to get going. So I'll see you at home."

She gave him a quick kiss before leaving and when she got in the elevator there were a couple of nurses who started giggling. She was sure that they had heard what had gone on in Cole's office and that she was the center of their giggling. She made a mental note not to carry on like that again until the time was right. But damn, when he started kissing her neck she couldn't help the feeling that overcame her body and got lost in the feel of his lips on her.

After he was done surgery and was coming out of the room he ran into Abe who was heading in to do his own surgery on a patient.

"Hey buddy, I heard you were getting some action in your office earlier."

"Boy that didn't take long to get around," Cole said, rubbing the back of his head in frustration. He would have to have a talk with Terry about spreading gossip.

"Don't worry about it, people around here love hearing juicy gossip and spreading it around. When Gina and I started going out we were often caught making out in my office. From the look on your face, I see you have something else on your mind so spill the beans."

"Well if you must know I just recently asked Christy to marry me."

"No way, so what did she say?"

"She said to ask her later when I'm a free man. I feel so stupid for having asked the way I did instead of romantically. So I will wait and when the time is right I will pop the question again and this time it will be done with dinner, flowers and an engagement ring that will have her falling in love with me all over again."

"Cole, I don't think she could fall more in love with you than she already does and probably wouldn't even care what kind of ring you gave her."

"I know she wouldn't care, but I want to give her something special. I'm going to start looking until I find the perfect one."

Abe looked at his watch and said he had to get to the surgery he had to perform. He just hoped that all the gossip that was going around the hospital about Cole and Christy wouldn't get back to Joyce who with no doubt would use it against him.

After leaving the hospital she went to the grocery store and picked up some meat for dinner, she wanted to make him something special. By the time she got home, June was gone so she started preparing the meat and potatoes and all the fixings. While it was cooking slowly in the oven she laid down on the sofa to take a nap. She was still there asleep when Cole got home.

When she felt a pair of warm lips on her cheek she opened her eyes. She jumped up when she could smell burnt food. "Oh my God, I fell asleep and I think dinner has gotten burnt."

"It's okay, just relax. When I walked in and could smell something burning I went into the kitchen and turned off the oven. I'm afraid that whatever you were making is ruined."

"I'm so sorry, I wanted to have your favourite meal cooked for you by the time you got home."

He cupped her face in his hands. "That was so sweet of you but please don't worry about it. I can always order us some takeout."

"I only meant to close my eyes for a few minutes," she said, her eyes tearing up.

"Hey, don't do that, don't cry. It's okay. You were tossing and turning most of the night in your sleep so I know you were tired. Now you lay back down and I'll go order us something."

After he got her settled down he went to the phone and ordered the food. When he looked back she had her eyes closed and he stared at her for a few minutes. She was so sweet and always thinking about him ahead of herself. It was time for him to tell his mother all about her and what was going on. So while she napped and he waited for the food to arrive he went into his office and dialed his mother's phone number.

Sweetheart, it's so nice to hear from you.

"Mom, there's something I need to tell you and it's very important."

I'm listening.

"I'm divorcing Joyce."

I'm sorry it had to come down to that but darling, it's about time that you opened your eyes and realize that she wasn't making you happy. How are you dealing with it?

"It's a big relief off of my mind, but there is so much more to tell you."

He then told her everything from the beginning and all about Christy and how he had fallen in love with her. He didn't leave anything out, he even told her how they haven't even consummated their love for each other yet.

I'm happy you found somebody who you truly love and someone who loves you. But I do hope that you're not rushing into anything and that she's not just a rebound.

"It's not a rebound mom, I love her from the depth of my heart and I want you to meet her. I just know you're going to love her and she is carrying your grandson."

I'm on a cruise right now and won't be back home for another month but as soon as I get back I'll jump on a plane and come visit you and this young woman you're in love with. I also want you to know that I am thrilled to death to be a grandmother and I can't wait to meet him. You take care now sweetheart and I'll see you very soon. I love you.

"I love you too Mom." He was so glad that she took it better than he expected her to. He loved his mother but never really had a close relationship but he was hoping that this baby would change all of that.

As soon as she hung up with Cole she turned to her husband Steven. "Well you're not going to believe this, my son has finally come to his senses and is divorcing Joyce."

"Well, it's about time Gloria."

"And that's not all, he has fallen in love with someone else and they're having a baby." When she saw Steven lifting his eyebrow she held up her hand to stop him from saying anything. "Now before you go off on how he's still a married man let me tell you the whole story."

When she was done revealing everything her son had told her he sat there Steven nodded his head. "As much as I hate Joyce I'm glad that he did not cheat on her. It's also a good thing that he found true love and I'm very happy for him."

"So am I but according to Cole she is accusing him of adultery and sleeping with the poor girl. We both know what kind of a woman she is and I'm sure that she's been up to no good all during their marriage and I plan on finding out everything."

"What are you going to do?"

"I'm going to hire a private investigator to find out what she's been up to. Cole needs my help and if we can get the dirt on Joyce it will help him in the divorce proceedings."

"No my dear, we are going to help him. I'll make some calls and get someone right away. I might only be his stepfather but I do think of him as a son."

"I can't wait to meet this Christy, from the way he talks about her she must be really special. Just think honey, we're finally going to be grandparents. So what are you doing sitting there? Get on the phone and make the call before he has to go in front of the judge."

Steven got to his feet and went over and kissed her on the cheek. "Yes dear, I'll do it now."

When he was gone she sat there smiling to herself. She just knew that Joyce was and has been cheating on Cole for a long time and now she was finally going to be able to prove it. She would have done it a long time ago but since her son was still married to Joyce she didn't think he would believe her and would be furious and never speak to her again.
