《NO STRINGS ATTACHED》CH. 8

Ben: I'm sorry, Sirs? There are no 'S' ranks?
Tempest: But you said there were six!
Atem: E, D, C, B and A only make for five so the sixth is supposed to be S, is it not?
Adeline: Uh, no? Guys, why would S be after A?
The trio looked at each other with faces screaming "Were we lied to?!" and remained stunned in place. Until the employee coughed a few times and said:
Ben: It goes indeed from E to A. The sixth rank is 'L' for Legend. It is the rank given to those whose powers are beyond the common of people.
"L. It was L now. How things have changed!" thought Shen. In any case, they only had one goal and that was to attract attention. The attention from the King himself and for that, this L rank would do nicely.
Shen: L it is then. When can we start the exam?
Ben: Hum, forgive me Sirs, but the L level exam isn't one that can be given that easily to anyone. You need to prove yourself first.
Atem: So we need to earn the right to be tested, is it?
Ben: Ah, well, Yes, in a way, Sir. The highest exam that can be taken is for rank A. If you were to attempt it, you would have to pay 100 gold coins per head and a thousand for the party. It would also take time for us to arrange the exams themselves.
Shen: Price aside, why would it take time?
Ben: The A rank Delver's exam is to win against ten other A rank adventurers by oneself. As for the party exam, you would need to defeat five A rank parties of five people each. The time it takes for us to recruit the adventurers of such level is to take into account. There aren't that many around after all.

Shen: Alright. 1300 Gold coins is it? Where do we sign up?
Both the employee as well as Adeline couldn't believe their ears. This was 1300 gold coins! It was an amount that close to no people could ever even earn in their lifetimes. No, in a dozen generations! And this youth was ready to pay up such a sum right away?!
This was beyond Ben's authority. He got up, bowed and said:
Ben: This kind of examination is beyond my level to request, please wait a moment while I go fetch the manager.
Shen: Sure, go do that.
Once Ben left, Adeline screamed at the top of her lungs:
Adeline: Are you crazy?! That's 1300 Gold coins! And the A rank exam! There is no way we could succeed! Are you seriously going to waste so much money?!
Tempest began to laugh boisteriously attracting even more attention around:
Tempest: Too bad we can't do the S rank exam right away though! Ahahahah!
Atem: This will indeed delay our plans. What do you think, leader?
Shen: It can't be helped. Let's just consider these as vacations? After so long, we deserve to take it easy for a time anyways.
Tempest: That's true! Ahahah!
Adeline: Are you guys out of your minds?!
Shen: Relax, Adeline. We're the ones paying anyways. Just enjoy the ride.
Adeline: Uuuuh...I only wanted to become a normal adventurer...Why did I end like this...
It was at this moment that a small retinue appeared from behind the doors that were at the back of the room. A man in his sixties still looking valiant, another older wearing a magician robe and two robust middle-aged men. They were guided by Ben who introduced the qutuor to the arriving new quatuor.
Ben: Guild Masters, these are the customers who wish to register for the A rank delver's examination.

At this moment, the entire field of the first floor began to erupt in fervent discussions:
???: Did I hear right?! A rank Delvers?!
???: Fuck, no wonder the GMs came here!
???: Since when has there been any who attempted this?!
???: Look at those fools! They're kids!
???: Man, they came here to waste the money of their elders or something?
At that moment, one of the two middle-aged man screamed strongly:
???: Silence!
The entire hall quieted down. The same man then turn towards the sitting quatuor:
???: Are you kids here to joke? If you are, you better get lost this instant! We have no time f-
At this moment, Shen materialized a bag filled with gold coins on the table. The weight of the gold so high that the table broke cleanly in two. Then, Shen got up and looked straight at the man:
Shen: When can we expect to receive our exam?
The old magus of the guild master's group approached the bag and moved his hands over it. Then, he turned around towards his group:
???: 1300 Gold coins, Real and clean.
Then, the man in his sixties nodded and towards the four said:
???: We will arrange for it as soon as possible and will call you when everything is ready. Ben here will take your details so we can get in touch with you. Please refrain from leaving the capital in the meantime and do enjoy your stay.
Then, to Ben:
???: Make sure to record their details correctly, Ben.
Ben: Without fail, Guild Master!
Then, the entourage of the guild master left and the crowd began to heat up. While everyone was merrily gossiping, Ben managed to get the details of the weird group.
Once done, the group left the adventurer's guild under the gazes of everyone. Some malicious too. Money is to greed what shit is to flies. Attractive.
Shen: Well then, first, let's go to the best inn town. Since we already displayed our wealth, let's be lavish.
Atem: Never were words better spoken.
Tempest: Ahahah! Let's go!
Adeline was following the trio while being dazed. The events that happened were so fantastical that she couldn't believe them. Did she, a newly trained priestess, just registered for a party examination of the Delver's A rank?! This could not be possible.
Then, the fear overcame her and she only had a single thought "Will I die?!" before passing out.
The sound of her unconscious body hitting the ground loud enough for the trio to notice. And just about everyone else around.
Shen: Guess this might have been quite stressful to her, uh? Tempest, pick her up gently and let's go.
Tempest: Alright, boss~
He picked up the priestess as if a bag and they went on their way in search of the most expensive and luxurious inn in the capital.

Dungeon Core Chat Room.
This is a slower-paced "experiment and dungeon building" web novel that tries to use the idea of peer-to-peer communication with Dungeon Cores instead of Dungeon to slave monster communication to break up the detailed dungeon building. Rank 1 description: (minimum met for system initialization...detailed description as follows) Each race was given a system by the gods to make up for their shortcomings and balance their place in this world. Humans: Abysmally bad at understanding and using magic unable to use more than the lowest of magic were given the "Skill System" magic in the form of premade skills with use, study, and mastery tied to experience. Elves: Intuitively understand magic and have long lives leading to vast knowledge and skill in their chosen fields. However, as a species, they have nearly zero sex drive and less than low fertility, so they were gifted the "World Tree System" with experience gained through the care of natural areas – gifting the chance of children to increase their numbers without dirty copulation. All “natural” or “wild” monsters are given an "Evolution system" designed around killing and consuming as many creatures as possible, slowly increasing strength and, at thresholds, allowing mutations to alter them multiple times. Dungeon cores are different. Unlike humans, they can see, manipulate and live off mana. Unlike Elves, they naturally crystallize after extended periods of time in high mana level areas. However, they cannot easily move or communicate and typically go insane without companionship. As a species other than the odd eccentric they are unimaginative. Brute forcing solutions without the drive to truly innovate. Thus they have been gifted with the "Dungeon Connection System" a magical version of the internet accessible by their peers that allows them to barter and sell: bait, traps, monsters, and knowledge, as well as entertain each other with “adventure streams” using exciting recorded battles and humorous reels of arrogant chumps biting off more than they can chew to often fatal effects. This is the casual story of a dungeon unluckily spawned far from potential adventurers forced to innovate beyond its peers to find its place in this world. Rank 2 Description: Justification. I've been on a dungeon core kick for months and while I love the genre – it's sparse with entries. Often the forced conflict gets repetitive and frantic solving of threats "power levels" the protagonist to god levels to progress the plot – taking away the nice steady progression fantasy I'm looking for. (Progression in this story is linked to how strong of monsters/traps/whatever he can create not his "level"...this is demonstrated by some of his newer monsters beating his older monsters not with discrete "this monster has 10 attack this one has 40") Additionally, the focus on 3rd parties with their drama takes away from the reason I’m reading dungeon core novels in the first place – I'm looking for magical crafting, experimentation and kingdom building – not defence from higher and higher levelled enemies looking to steal/destroy/control the MC. This novel is kind of just me writing the story I wish I could read. I like thinking about the experimentation that can be done in fantasy settings using 'mana' as an excuse to make up rules and try to keep them internally consistent. IE once I define how a rule works, I'm going to commit to keeping it – no breaking hard truths I've given when it's convenient, even if it backs me into a corner. Hopefully, that should make the story interesting to read even if it's SOL and less action-oriented. There will be problems to solve and a clear progression in strength (of created monsters and knowledge) however due to not wanting to force conflict for the sake of conflict the general theme will be closer to slice of life with few action sequences and no overarching goal so please keep that in mind when picking this up as the genre is not for everyone. Finally, I have a clear goal of what I want from this story (not an endless romp but a series of arcs and then a conclusion that's a couple of dozen medium-sized chapters long) I want to commit to finishing it or at least bringing it to a point of rest. I hate all the engaging stories that stop with a “hiatus” indefinitely so in the event I lose motivation I'll work to end this even if the ending becomes rushed/unsatisfying just to give a sense of closure. I’m planning on including several polls in terms of direction and taking feedback heavily into account if I get enough readers (but may choose to ignore it if it deviates too far from the direction I want to take this as in feedback like: “The MC needs a cartoonishly evil arch-enemy that wants to enslave him and force the mc to pump out magic items” or “the MC needs to make a body and learn teleportation then live with humans” will get shot down without consideration.)
