《Romance of the Three Beasts》7.3 - Dragon's Trust

Eventually they had arrived at a large clearing around a lake. Dragon had been led out in his bonds. The lady was left behind, and this was the furthest he had been away from her.
He was led inside the large cave where several other slavers awaited. With the way they carried themselves; their haughty expressions, the way they eyed him up, their malicious grins, Dragon knew that they weren’t quite as soft as the other slavers that had led him here.
His eyes then drew towards a throne made of rock, jagged along the edge, though it didn’t seem to bother the large man, that looked more like a lion with hair that was like a mane, and a beard that flowed down to his chest. He was slightly dirty looking, his hair rough. Dragon noted the large sabre hung loosely at his side.
“…” Dragon just glared at him as he always did to pretty much anyone.
The lion man stood from his throne and the slavers that led him in dispersed, though their leader remained behind him.
A low growling sound grumbled from the lion man’s throat. “Why did you bring this one?” He started to walk around Dragon and eyed him up.
Dragon remained standing there. He was still heavily injured, and outnumbered. It didn’t matter though, he didn’t have the intention to fight anyhow.
“He’s strong.” The leader replied simply.
“Strong?” Lion man replied.
The leader nodded. “He took’n ah Red Wolf.”
“Oh yeah?”
“Alone, wasn’ so hot eitha’.”
“Oh yeah?”
The leader nodded towards the lion man.
The lion man then turned to stare at Dragon.
“I like the look in your eye too. Sure, you can join in.” The lion man grinned.
Dragon continued to glare silently.

The lion man cocked his head to one side. “What do you say, huh? You don’t really have a choice.” He roared with laughter. The others joined in, causing the cave to echo with the cacophony of laughter.
Dragon continued to glare, remaining still.
The lion man walked up and stared into Dragon’s eyes. “See, the way things work here is…” Then he punched Dragon against his gut, causing him to wince and bow, there was no need to spend any ki here. “I command and you obey.”
Dragon slowly returned to standing tall, only to be struck across the face. He stumbled back, but remained on his feet. He spit out some blood, but otherwise didn’t react. It was then the lion man continued to beat on him, pounding the injured fighter.
“So, what’ll it be? Will you start following like a good little pup? Or do I need to keep convincing you?”
Dragon spat up some blood and then stood up once more, half bowed. It took a moment, but he stood tall and glared at the lion man once more.
The lion man stepped up and as he threw a punch. However, as he did so, Dragon stumbled forward and hopped up.
Dragon aimed a kick towards his opponent, but unfortunately for Dragon, this wasn’t the first time his opponent had tangoed. His heel struck steel, and though it almost shattered the blade, causing it to shudder, he didn’t meet his target. Lion man struck Dragon and he fell to the ground once more, spitting up more blood.
As he was beat on, he heard the steps of others arrive before a slight gasp and whimper. He looked up to see the little lady.
“What’s with the girl?” Lion man stepped away from
“She’s a noble’n, but they’re ah pretty pair.” The leader replied.

Lion man looked at the girl and then Dragon. “A pretty pair? Well one of you aren’t so pretty anymore. Let’s make both of you not so pretty.”
Lion man walked up to the girl, sabre drawn.
As he did so, Dragon tensed up. In his bleeding form, with several broken bones no doubt, he could feel a deep coldness grip him. He could feel what little ki he had burn up before his blood started to grow hotter within him. His eyes filled with blackness, his sight starting to blur and disappear.
The coldness turned to warmth, but the dread remained. As it flowed through him, there was a change in the wind. However, before his consciousness eluded him, there was the sound of wind picking up, and then a roar.
“DRAAAGOOON!” Roared a familiar voice.
He paused. He looked up, his eyes no longer filled with blackness, going back to normal.
“…”
‘Alright.’ He thought.
Dragon then fell unconscious.

The Adventures of Alan
What happens when a university professor somehow ends up in another world, where magic bends the laws of nature? Alan is, albeit unwillingly, about to find out. As a professor of physics, he has a decent understanding of how the world works, or so he likes to think. Armed only with his knowledge, Alan is thrown into a world very different from his own. In his new reality, he will meet both friends and foe, he will seek knowledge, he will build power, and perhaps he will even find love again? Follow Alan through his adventures, and find out for yourselves how he deals with the challenges thrown at him by a new world, while struggling with the issues brought with him from his old one. * Author’s note: A fair warning. This is the first time I’ve published anything, and basically the first time I’ve written anything more than mandatory school-stuff. The story will probably have inconsistencies, grammatical errors (not my native tongue, though that excuse is getting old), and potentially confusing (missing?) plot. I will naturally do my best to write something worth reading, but my main goal in writing this story is to have fun and explore the limits of my own creativity. My hope in publishing it here, is that I’ll reach someone who enjoy the story, and can push me forward towards writing more, as it is difficult at times to find the motivation to write just for myself. Additionally, I can’t really promise to have regular updates, as I have a full-time job that often likes to take the ‘full-time’ part literally, and a sporadic social life that occasionally surprises me (happy surprises mostly, so I shouldn’t complain). I’ll aim for once a week to start with, and take it from there. Happy reading! Cover photo by Jeff Hire (/photographer/gun4hire-58415), from https://freeimages.com/.

Contact First
2039 - Earth A narrow beam energy signal appeared aimed squarely at earth from the TRAPPIST system. The communication consisted of a layered set of repeating data over several thousand wavelengths. Over the next few months scientists discovered that the lower wavelengths carried an encoded numerical language which could then be used to interpret the more complicated messages carried on the higher wavelengths. After half a year of painstaking work the signal was fully decoded. It described a small satellite launched along a precise trajectory towards the fourth planet of our solar system. Included was a package of advanced research that humanity would need to have ready in order to receive the satellite and decelerate it safely. The alien data provided the kick that humanity needed to turn from petty squabbling and unite to explore the final frontier. Major government and corporate leaders worked together to create the framework for the United Federation of Sol. UFS spaceports went from scaffolding to daily launches in every major city around the globe. Ships floated like dandelion seeds, spreading on solar wind to grow into colonies. 2397 - Mars orbit, Egeria Station The command center was a hive of activity as checks were conducted and systems initialized. Scientists flitted by like mayflies as communicators beeped and holoscreens spat out green tinted readouts. Nervous energy was thick in the air as everyone anticipated the culmination of over three hundred years of work. Massive fusion reactors under the planet's surface thrummed with barely restrained power as energy fed into a gleaming metallic maze criss crossing the planet. Metal fingers reached up, overshadowing the mighty olympus mons and trying to grab the stars. All over the solar system, people quickly turned to look as gigantic energy lances shot from the dusty fourth planet. Two years later. The same people that clapped loudly at the successful activation of project Hermes now wait with baited breath. A silver capsule trailing bright photonic sails is captured by a net of grav beams and guided with care bordering on reverence into the station. Holoscreens across the headquarters project an image of the sleek craft settling in the bay. Data connections are established and the holoscreens blink to white. Slowly an image forms on the screen. Across the headquarters people stare in wonder as a wholly alien face stares back. "Contact established. Welcome to the universe."

It contains terrifying moments of murder, suicide, mayhem, rituals, hauntings, and nightmares in various poetic forms from ballads to sonnets and many more. Most of these pieces are oneshot tales, but the "Haunted Blades" ballad sequence is marked with an asterisk (*) throughout the collection to denote an interconnected series of poems.
