He shot four of them in quick succession, his sights locked on the location of the others.
[Enemy defeated!]
[Enemy defeated!]
Only two notifications, huh. He supposed that meant the other two had survived.
Sophie grabbed his arm. "We need to run!"
Lance nodded. "Agreed."
They sprinted off, dodging and weaving between the buildings and avoiding the monsters chasing them.
Ahead of them, Lance saw a building, a large brick block, with a sign above the door reading 'police station.'
Lance grabbed Sophie's hand and pulled her toward it. They threw themselves against the glass windows and broke through, finding themselves in a dingy hallway.
"This way!" Lance said, leading her down the hall.
The monsters were closing in from either side of them. Lance turned and fired a bullet into one of them, sending it flying backward.
He heard Sophie scream as she was dragged away from him by a pair of claws.
"Look out!" Lance shouted.
The creature swung its claws at him, but he jumped out of the way, causing the monster to stumble forward.
He ran after Sophie, firing bullets at the creature to try and slow it down.
Lance's shots hit the monster, but they didn't seem to have much effect. It continued to charge toward him, flailing its clawed arms wildly.
Lance fired his last bullet into the creature's leg, which caused it to lose balance.
Sophie took the opportunity to free herself and jumped onto the creature's back, wrapping her legs around its neck. She formed that same blue energy between her hands, and soon enough the creature was roaring with pain.
She rolled off to the side, landing on her feet, and ran over to Lance.
The creature roared once more, its cry painful to listen to, and then it keeled over, its distorted grey head crusted with ice.

Lance fired three shots into the monster's chest. It continued to rage against him, trying to dislodge him from his position.
"Stop moving!" Lance shouted.
The monster stopped, and Lance began to move again. He kicked the creature in the chest, knocking it to the ground.
"Stay still!" He ordered.
The monster glared at him, its red eyes flickering with anger.
Lance stepped back, drawing his knife from his belt. He gripped it tightly, ready to throw it at the creature.
A spear of ice came sailing past his ear, and he barely ducked out of the way before it slammed straight into the creature's neck.
"Hey, you stole my kill!" Lance complained, though his smiling face belied his true emotions. "Thanks, Sophie."
She scowled back at him, though he could tell that was an affectation too. "It was a team effort."
Lance shrugged. "Whatever."
The monster's body shuddered once, twice, and then it was still.
[Enemy defeated (cooperative)!]
Lance sighed. "Okay, let's go."
Sophie gave him a smile and nodded. "Right behind you."

Old Riding Author Lunatic Asylum
Just off the A19, in the dark, incomprehensible lands known as Yorkshire, there lies a town. A town where shadow-silent alleys glint with the secret hunger of knives. Where blood soaks the chipboard window shutters of forsaken terraces stretching off into the night. Where the smog-choked air rattles with the depraved laughter echoing out from clubs that can only generously be described as post-apocalyptic. Well, that’s Middlesbrough. But down the A19 a bit (an impossibly long way down, actually) there lies another town: Raughnen, in the ancient, forgotten Old Riding. It is an equal match in muggery and thuggery alike. It also has magic spells and pointy wizard hats. And now, across the miles and across all sensibilities, a pretty nasty power (a magic one) calls out for its pretty nasty counterpart (a decidedly unmagic one): a proper sound Boro lad. Nothing good can come of it. This is a collection of one novella and four connected short stories: I. A Yorkshire Summoning II. Old Riding Day Trip (the novella) III. Heaven is a Parmo IV. Death on the 66 V. Death on the 257 In total, this comprises 34 chapters totalling around 35,000 words, so try not to worry. It will be over relatively quickly. There are three more short stories with more tenuous links to the core collection: Rush, Paper Round and Scenario 79: Sausage Fingers, all of which can be found in my collection Short Records of Misadventure. Reading these may allow you to make more sense of certain parts of the story, if any sense is to be made at all. NOTE: There are instances of prejudice and discrimination within these stories, including elements of sexism and ageism, which are purely the thoughts and actions of the characters involved and which certainly do not reflect my own views on these matters. ANOTHER NOTE; A WARNING, PERHAPS: This can get a bit weird. In less than 150 pages, we have four viewpoints, first and third person narratives, and a completely disjointed plot with lots of gaps, dead ends and no real resolution. Also ZERO lunatic asylums. It's all a bit odd. If that sort of thing isn't your cup of tea, which it most likely isn't, it might be best to move on now.

Advent of the Mindfire Mage: A Challenger's Return Story
Updates MWF, 6PM EST! Not so long ago, a story was posted on Webnovel, one that fired my imagination unlike almost anything before or since. It was known as The Challenger's Return: Rebirth of the Rainbow Mage. However, 150 chapters in, the author NightWind, who I'd personally interacted with and begun to consider a true friend, vanished from the internet without a trace. And so, I have acted upon my fervent desire to pick up his torch, to refuse to let his world that stirred such passion in me die. Read below about my own take on The Challenger's Return. Was Lheticus summoned to the Tower by chance, or by choice? Either way, with the new power he wins, he won't hesitate to burn anyone who seeks to keep him from his true love to cinders, and with a unique ability of the highest potential, he may just succeed, but he's just as likely to burn himself down. And as it turns out, the latter case may be woven into his very destiny...can that destiny be changed? And if it is, what will be the repercussions for the Tower? (You may want to read a fair amount of the original Challenger's Return before starting this, as, particularly in the early chapters, many things that are laid out in it are glossed over in this story.)
