《Two Brothers》17: Drunk on Elvish wine

"May my arrow hit where you will them Lord, God will always guide my hand"
-Common prayer said by the Archer Corps.
Jack exited though the door and looked at the cause of the commotion, for some reason he initially suspected Bosco to be the one scaring around the locals. He was mistaken. A blonde man was walking down towards the village from the woods.
Jack walking towards him, he noticed that Bosco was following him, he did not knew when did the dog started to do so but he was glad to count with his help, at around 10 yards Jack stopped so did the Blonde man.
"you with them?" Asked jack while holding tightly to his spear and shield ready to start fighting at the first glance of aggression.
the Blonde man smiled and shook his head side to side
"I'm here for them" the Blonde man reached inside his coat, which made Jack raise his shield and spear defensively, the man just raised his hand slowly as to calm them down.
"this is an... extermination request, for the Deserters, you can confirm it yourself" The blonde man held an envelope in his hand, Jack did not wanted to trust this man, but he doubted he could verify his story himself.
Word traveled quickly and before their stand off had time to finish, the man that was healing his brother had exited the house and approached the two Humans.
"i guess that he is not with you" The Elf looked at Jacks raised Shield and Spear
"What business you have with this village?, speak now!" ordered the Elf in an authoritarian voice.
Jack sat in front of the blonde man, After the Elf who he suspected was the village head or at least a person with authority confirmed the man's story he allowed him to enter and collect the items he needed to confirm the deaths of the deserters. they where now sitting under a tarp tent the Elves have erected to accommodate the guests, a table separated the two man who looked at each other trying to estimate each other's strength.
"We did not had the time yet, They call me Siegfried Stormbound" Said the blond man while putting his right hand over his hearth
"Jack Callahan, sleeping there is Brandon Callahan, and that is Bosco" Jack said while rightly pointing at his brother and the dog without taking his eyes away from Siegfried.
"You also have family names, and your companion is quite interesting" Said Siegfried while drinking down the wine gifted to them by the Elves for saving the village.
"Elven wine is best" he said while poring himself another cup
"Do people around this lands usually don't have a Last name?" Jack asked while taking a small sip from his cup.
It was red wine, after moving his tongue around his mouth savoring the remaining of the wine in his mouth he came to a conclusion, it tasted great, a light grape flavor with light tones of cherry and flower petals, easy on the tongue and pleasant, it had a refreshing note to it, maybe some ingredient he could not discern, and it had a low alcohol content, at least half of what Earth wine had, maybe around 6% alcohol Vol, He raised his cup and drank until he was satisfied and exhaled loudly in satisfaction, it definitely was a fine wine.
"Around this lands?" Siegfried said with a smile on his face "I would not know, i never ventured this far in to the Savag... Unconquered territory"

Jack noticed that the man corrected his words, midway, maybe he did not wanted to offend the locals.
"But for humans to have a last name as you call it, usually means that you where born in to nobility" Siegfried downed another cup quickly.
"Are you a Noble?" Jack asked But Siegfried shook his head indicating that jack was mistaken
"I'm an Exile, I do not belong to any House. My name was given to me by my mother. Helga Sormbearer, She was given such name after... well lets say i was an unruly kid when growing in her belly, She bared the storm inside of her and when i was born, i was named Stormbound. Usually names like this are a bad Omen, but i consider myself lucky so far" Siegfried raised his cup and Wished health to his mother where ever she was.
"Does the Name Callahan means anything?"
"I Would not know, it was the Last name of my father, we where given it when we where born, as is the custom of my people, but The same as you, we are not nobles" Jack shrugged at the question. "So why are you exiled?" Jack wanted to know if this man was a criminal of some sort.
"such personal questions so early in the night" Siegfried laughed while saying "lets make a deal, i tell you my story and you do the same, it is only right" he downed another cup before beginning to talk.
His story was quite simple and disappointing in fact, He was born and raised to the rulers of the Highland Clan from the mountain ridges of the north. For some reason his father who was the patriarch of the village despised him, this made Siegfried become a trouble making teenager, getting in to fights and courting females of marriageable age. After years of messing around his father had enough when a young girl that was supposed to be untouched and was a week away from getting married to his younger brother revealed that she had sleep with him. His father gave him an ultimatum. Since then Siegfried had roamed the southern Kingdoms working as a mercenary and gaining quite the reputation, in the capital he was known as the "The Golden Giant" or "The Walking Storm". When Siegfried mentioned that he was called "The Golden Giant" he finally caught up with a fact that flew over his head the first time he meet the man, He was at least a head taller than Jack who topped at 6'4", and he was muscular, maybe a 100 pounds heavier than Jack. He was a free spirit in a twisted sort of way, taking pride in completing his jobs with deadly efficiency and then whoring his money away. Along the night he told more anecdotes about the women he had fucked than about the fights he's been in.
When it was Jacks turn to speak he chose his words carefully, he did not lied, but also did not told the entire truth just like he suspected Siegfried did.
"so you both got Teleported to this world?" Siegfried's face was blushing from all the wine they had drank so far, he had a small hiccup before he kept drinking, three wine pots down he undid the Wax seal of the forth one and poured himself another cup.
"That is quite the story. And you call that beast of yours a "Dog" " Siegfried rubbed his chin "It looks like a Worg, but those things are Feral, and i never seen one tamed" Siegfried looked at the Dog who was sleeping, a half eaten bone laid in front of him.

"ether way, since you where the one that killed the Mage and a few of the deserters you are entitled for part of the reward" Siegfried commented while holding the Mage's staff. "If you come with me to the capital, i will give you half of the Coin I'm supposed to receive for proving their deaths"
Jack was drunk but he was not stupid, A person doing such a thing out of pure kindness was rare, it raised suspicion.
"And why would you do that?" jack said while rocking slightly on his chair, he was feeling a bit dizzy, he never used to drink heavily, and now his vision was beginning to blur.
"Don't get me wrong Jack, I don't think that you are naive, and you are doing the right thing by not fully trusting me, same as i don't fully trust you" Siegfried's voice and tone had lost all of its drunkness and he was now looking at Jack in serious manner
"When i was a kid my father was an asshole, but he was never a bad man. When I was young, I hated his iron will and his unbreakable code of honor. If i managed to convince a village girl to sleep with me why should i shy away from it, if i was able to steal the liquor from the cellar why should i not drink it? If i was offended by someone why should i not break his arms in retaliation? But that a different Siegfried, one that did not believed in the teachings of The Wolf, one that never farseeing consequences. I'm a different man now" when he spoke he looked away at the canvas tent wall, Jack seen this look many times. The 1000 yard stare.
"I'm not a kid anymore, experience had taught me that if you do good things, The Wolf will chase the Evil away and will lead the good towards you through the dark night" Siegfried sighted and finished his cup of wine and started to unfold his sleeping bag on the floor on the opposite side of the tent to where Brandon was recovering.
"The Wolf. Is he like your god?" Jack asked while finishing his cup before starting to prepare his bed also.
"no like my god, he is a god, like many others, he teaches many things, if you pray long and hard enough he might even guide you to the other side when your life on this world ends" Siegfried paused. He looked over his shoulder and meet Jack's eyes "i have seen him. Maybe one day you will do so as well" He blew out the oil lamp nearby him and covered himself with the sleeping bag facing the Canvas.
Jack turned off the Oil lamp near him and the Tent was covered in darkness. He was to dizzy to lay down, he had a feeling that if he did he would puke out most of the whine he drank that night, He thought about what the man had told him. Did he believed in God? after all that he saw during the war? he did not had an answer, his mind kept wondering about his conversation with the Blonde man, on the distance he heard some quiet whimpers, as if someone that was trying to hide the fact that he was crying.
Maybe this man was not as two dimensional as Jack initially thought. He laid down and closed his eyes, his drunken stupor took over him and he drifted in to a dreamless dark sleep.
In the lowest Level of an underground Dungeon the floor was covered in a bright purple liquid. The Calm surface of the liquid started to be disturbed by an vibration. A heavy rumbling resonated around the room from deep inside the galleries, couple of stones on the ceiling detached and fell inside the liquid making a deep "gulp" like sound effect.
The earthquake intensified and the walls of the chambers began to crack quickly before transforming in to wide gaps, the Level of the liquid lowered at a quick pace revealing a Lone figure chained to the middle of the room.
Twisted horns and spikes protruded from the monster's body, it spit some liquid out and gasped for air. The gasps turned in to Demonic screams that resonated deep inside the dungeon's hallways, the chains Holding It prisoner snapped with a metallic sound, one by one they broke releasing the Long forgotten beast from their hold

Journey of Infinite Steps
Science Fiction/ Low fantasy Iliad. Oliver just wanted a job that could keep his family fed, and himself sane. Was that so much to ask for? Apparently. As he instead ends up facing monsters and dodging his way to another world instead. Competent as he views himself figuring out how to reopen a portal back home by himself is defiantly above his knowledge base. Of coarse it would be vastly simpler if he could keep 'getting back home' as his primary goal. 'Staying alive' is unfortunately a far more immediate and relevant goal. I will post any content warnings on a Per Chapter basis. Divisive content will be as skip-able as I can reasonably manage Discord Link will be available for those interested in assisting editing/ coauthoring. Especially character writers/those willing to work out the math/ economies and world building even if only as a wall to bounce ideas off of.-----Full Synapsis contains serious spoilers----- Looking to take care of his family, Oliver finds himself flung into a faraway place. Try as he might, his Iliad will not be simple or peaceful as he'd like. Alas the slow and unending war of Chaos and Order has long memories and longer reach. If Oliver is to make his way back home it looks like He'll have to solve the universe one fight and mystery at a time. Especially as the Laws of Physics shift, often on a per world basis. Hopefully there is still a home to come back to.
