Kal leveled up as well as getting a new skill. Leveling up would grant you 3 points to put into your base statistics, and at every even level 1 skill point to get new skills or quickly gain progress on ones you have. The problem with trying to get new skills using the skill point was that you had to navigate the system trying to find the skill you wished to obtain. Tapping on the skill point on the menu would bring you to the skill homepage, a page consisting of a couple paragraphs detailing basic skills and a tutorial on how to use them. To find specific skills, you would have to try navigating it like a website, though it had no search function and was about as easy as trying to use wikipedia using only hyperlinks to other wikipedia pages. It was also organized in an absolutely horrible way, sometimes the linking of two pages being nonsensical.
Kal already had a spell to get, after some thought he knew he was going to get the spell Soul Arrow. It was a very good beginner spell, low mana consumption and very customizable. Magic wasn't what Kal originally was in his past life, but everyone knew a couple spells so he knew how it worked. Magic was unable to be attained normally until you used a skill point to unlock a spell, and it did something akin to opening a third eye. Spells worked in a simple way, they had a sort of program or model that you would draw in your head, then you would direct through your body to fire. The magic was a sort of fourth dimension to the programs and models in your head, and someone with magic trying to explain it to someone without magic would be like trying to tell a rock what vision, hearing, or sense of touch is and how it works. Once you had magic, it just clicked and you could do magic.

Soul arrow though, was in Kal's opinion one of the best spells. It was available to learn immediately, and was greatly customizable. The size, power, speed, material, everything about it was able to be modified. The only problem is how much knowledge it takes to be able to customize it, with only people who have mastered the spell or very advanced magicians being able to take advantage of the spell to it's absolute fullest.
Kal arrived at the park before he knew it with his body glistening in the moonlight and due to his now superhuman body, not a shiver was running through him. The portal was making it's presence known, a light purple disc floating in the air with a small makeshift camp of small rats perusing through the playground. A small whistle flew through the air, following a small, slightly transparent arrow. Impacting the rat, the arrow made it halfway into the body before disappearing. The rat went stuff, and fell down the slide causing the other rats to see it and become alerted, cautious about a possible intruder.
Kal was already slipping past them, sticking to the shadows he already had another rat killed, his hand deep inside of its head. Luckily the increased ability of his body also increased his ability to hold his liqour, and he was slowly becoming more sober. Another soul arrow killed another rat, and it’s brethren finally found Kal. The last five guard rats started rushing at Kal, who took a defensive stance.
Without a sword, Kal wasn’t confident in coming out without any injuries, but he knew at the least he would win and hopefully get enough experience to level up which would fully heal him. The rats still had no intelligence and blindly rushed at him, crawling over each other. Falling backwards onto one arm and spinning, Kal was able to execute a sweeping kick and it broke something on the rat who got hit, and pushed three of the rats away. The other two were a bit slower and fell behind the other three, but they were met with Kal bouncing off his grounded hand, and landing on the spine of one of the rats. The other rat was able to nick his calf, leaving a shallow gash that Kal was worried was going to get infected. The other two rats got back by the time Kal was back on his feet, standing him down three to one. They were more cautious now after losing almost half of their pack, this time opting to all aim to get Kal from a separate direction. Kal didn’t want to just stay on his feet, so he took the offensive when he saw this and ran towards one of the rats when he saw their makeshift plan. It would have been more effective if they had a larger group, but leaving one member on each side meant Kal could finish off one side to deal with everyone else in a more favourable position. That is exactly what happened, with Kal’s burst of speed being much faster than the rats he was able to step on the head of the rat before the other two even got to his previous position. Since the other two rats were behind Kal, he quickly turned around to meet his opponents. He grabbed the one closest to him and held it up like a shield in front of the other one, he pulled back is his hand and an soul arrow that was longer than his others came out of his palm, impaling the body of one rat to he head of the other.

“That was the last of my mana” Kal thought to himself. Mana was a very finite resource, and the only way to expand your mana pool was putting stat points into mind or to use all your mana, like working out for magic. It was risky to train your mana though, as it took time to replenish and if you used all your mana spells would start to draw off your life energy. Kal was alone here now though, and could leisurely wipe out any small groups that came through the portal while he waited for his mana to recharge, and that was what he intended to do.

Four story anthology
[participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] [participant in #NaNoWriMo] Preface: This fiction will contain four different stories set up as a challenge for myself and to get better at writing. The challenge for royal road writathon is a 55.555 word goal while the nanowrimo challenge is 50.000 words. Reader suggestions is turned on, feel free to point out errors I missed and I'll fix them up! Chasing sun, napping softly: Cultivation/Xianxia genre. Some parts will poke at the ridiculousness of the Xianxia gerne. We follow the life of a magical fox monster, who doesn't like how the cultivation world works. Said beast seems to have more knowledge than is usual for normal magical beasts. In it's infinite wisdom it decided to search for the main character of the cultivation world to have a cozy and safe place beside him. Our fox will act as a "wise beast" to coast along on the main characters rise to greatness, all for peace, happiness and that amazing napping spot in the sun. The challenges for myself with this story: Writing in first person. Comedic effect between talking vaguely and sounding wise. The cost of heroism: A story more centered around fights and mental health of hired mercenaries/heroes. The world is infected with an eldritch corruption. Humans are trying their best to explore and clear out wilderness and the dungeons hiding in them to establish new cities. Lords seek for hired hands to do the professional work. Thanks to the setting, the story will show how awful pasts are the norm and how pragmatic people became thanks to that. People exchange their sanity for riches, fame and gods acceptance. Interpersonal relationships change drastically and quickly. The challenges for myself with this story: Writing grim scenes/imparting a feeling of how grim the world is. Writing fight scenes. Showing different mental states. Describing their influence on people during fights, walks or even after successful or failed campaigns. Who will be the next powerhouse? : A story about a gaming show, it's host Staan and the different participants. Stereotype characters, stereotype backstories, silly challenges and quizzes. The winner of those challenges gets powerups for their power system. Be it magic, ki, psychic power or anything else imaginable and unimaginable to reach the power of gods. The challenges for myself with this story: A softer tone for storytelling. Making the reader smile and enjoy themselves. A different try at slice of life story. I was left behind on earth as my family conquered another world and enjoys riches, but that's okey because I got a cheat too! : Stereotypical Isekai story parody twisted into an Urban Fantasy story. The challenges for myself with this story: Writing over the top and overdramatic scenarios/scenes Writing in first person. Walking into stereotypical scenarios and making them more dramatic/giving them a twist. Different type of humor.

Theo Lane is chosen to be the avatar of a deity to partake in a tournament to decide the One God. He isn’t the only one. No. There are a lot more than he would like. Of course the apathetic high-school student would never agree to the desperate pleas of the said goddess, but there was a reward for the winner. He could become a god himself if he won. The greatest hassle was the stage itself. Instead of Earth, it would be on another planet with technology similar to the medieval ages with a few twists. A planet thrice the size of Earth with denizens of its own, with a history of its own. There was only one wish in his life, and that was to bring back the one he failed to protect. If murdering every other person in the world was what it would take, so be it. It was his only chance.
