《That Small Library by Dover Street》7. Cup

"You look beat." He comments, taking a sip of his coffee while sparing a glance at her. She sighs, setting down her bag on the counter and conking her head against the hard wood, letting out a mumble that was muffled against the countertop. "Work got you down?"
"What do you think?" She more or less mumbles into the wood, letting out a whimper a second later. "Just my first day at work and I'm already being run ragged."
He lets out a non-commital hum, "That's probably just what they do at the beginning. They'll ease up on you once you've got a few weeks under your belt." He continues on typing on his keyboard, before taking another sip of their coffee. "... So, why'd you stop by here? Pretty sure you can doze off at home."
"I'll do it here. Might doze off when I'm in the bus and I'll probably wake up somewhere deserted." She grumbles, "... Just need to find someplace quiet."
He hums, nodding along in response to her words while he continued to type on his keyboard. She frowns a few moments later, the sound of clacking keys ringing against her ears, and she raises her face to meet his stare. There was no doubt about the look of mischief in his eyes -- he's taking the piss out of her.
"Keep it quiet, or I'll punch your lights out."
"... Someone needs to take a chill pill." He airily replies, nonetheless reducing the sound of his keystrokes to a mere whisper, "... Seriously though, if you're planning on sleeping here, find someplace else. Having someone just dozing off in the front desk makes it bad for business."
She blinks. "Isn't this a public library?"

"Yep. Still a bad thing to do, though." He poked his head up the counter, and glanced around the area around them. "... Pretty sure there's a beanbag chair just lying around, so you can crash there if you want. Take a few books if you want to, but don't get any drool on them or I'll charge you for damages."
"Got it." She grunts, letting out a soft sigh as she slides off the stool. The sound of clinking porcelain makes her pause however, and she turns back to see a cup of steaming coffee sitting right on the counter.
"Uh..." She trails off, and she sees him rising out of his seat. "What's this?"
"Coffee." He replies, shuffling towards the back of the counter, "You can have that – I'll just brew a fresh one in the back."
She stares at the creamy liquid, still wafting a little bit of steam. Her brows furrow into confusion, just wondering why he was so accommodating, before shaking her head a second later. "... I think I'll pass. I'm supposed to sleep, not drink some coffee."
"Alright." He nods, snatching the mug and giving her a toast before downing it all in one gulp, mischief dancing through his eyes. "... Ah, that's some good stuff. Want some?"
She frowns, scratching her cheek while glancing about the aisles. "... Maybe in the future."
He shrugs, giving her a wave before stooping back down on his seat and continuing to poke at his computer.
"That's a promise, then."
