《Jupiter's Rising》Chapter 9 - Shot into Space

A headache, an hour worth of sleep and high levels of panic and anxiety were just about how I was feeling watching the egg being tampered with by 4 tentacles streaming out of my hand.
‘Hahaha… I don’t even know since when I started just accepting all the blatant shit this slime has been spewing nor why I am oddly so accepting of it.’ My thoughts were again leading me down a potential nervous breakdown. It really was odd how I was so accepting of everything that had happened these two days. I couldn’t really understand it nor would I believe anyone else would handle it so well discovering slime in their head, withering a tree for personal use and, the cherry on top, being part of a bold sci-fi move to get shot out into space by your personal slimes incubator.
‘Maybe it’s what god had rewarded me with for alleviating my complete lack of ambition and excitement that mundane life provided me with? With my luck I doubt it is. I probably lost some bet in some karmic mind game in my past life and get this as a twisted joke of some sorts.’ It probably was or I died and ended up in hell with a slime for a handler? I will probably never know.
I really wasn’t sure what to think of all this, just that I kind of enjoy the prospects of rising above my considerably depressing life and do something with myself other than just sit around buying and selling shit I don’t really care about.
I hear a few sparks to which my anxiety worsens.
“Hey…haha…uhm… Phoenix, you sure you know what you’re doing over there? Teleportation technology doesn’t seem to be the best thing to be fiddling with no?” I nervously ask as sparks are never a good sign of anything scientific.
“Jupiter, I need to focus. Don’t worry; I received the proper info-packet on what to do in emergency situations!” Phoenix replies a little annoyed.
‘Ah right, more bombastic methods that your high and mighty rank 4 civilization had. Alright, your humble slave shall just shut up and wait for my impending death in space then.’ I sarcastically thought.
Phoenix was still fiddling with the device mumbling incoherent words and numbers for a good two hours as I sit there just watching and hoping the egg doesn’t just fizzle into an explosion.
Apparently, the egg came with a sort of advanced crystal reactor which can harness insane amounts of energy which always held a back reserve for if ever slimes or other sentient things were lost during transport as space was fraught with dangers like thieves, monsters, space crap like black holes and random rocks flashing by at the speed of light. Really is a wonderful place to visit which I just happened to have the honor of doing.

I still reassured myself that either I am getting teleported back to slime nation for slavery and tests or end up somewhere new and exciting where me and phoenix could evolve into some sort of great badassery. It was the only thing keeping me slightly expectant of what is to come and I guess my life really was shit since I decided this was still better than what I was currently doing.
Now what slime god here is trying to achieve is set up the teleport to accommodate me as well while setting the directional system to send us to a habitable planet with higher energies somewhere in the galaxy or the nearby galaxies which I still find absurd as the pure distance itself was absurd. This whole fucking idea was absurd. Was it mentioned that this egg only has power for 1 trip and will probably get destroyed in the process?
Here I prided myself, slightly sociopathic-y, in being slightly crazy and whimsical yet I look like a goddamn child when compared to Phoenix and its ‘rank 4 super races’ antics.
‘Sigh…if gods do exist… I really hope y’all help me arrive in one piece wherever we end up.’ I pray quietly a little prayer for us.
“You really should trust my abilities Jupiter. You are acting like a child.” Phoenix casually tosses a line at me which freaks me out.
“Wait! You can read my thoughts?” Shocked at the possibility that Phoenix has heard all the crap I’ve been saying in my head.
To which I breathe a sigh of relief as Phoenix mentions” No but even I could tell your just as anxious as a little kid fighting they’re first world beast.”
“What’s a world beast?” I ask feeling weird at the thought that children are fighting something that sounds like an epic rank dungeon boss.
“Many of the worlds from higher rank civilizations contain beasts that roam and rampage around the world as those planets contain higher energies allowing greater growth so jobs to deal with such creatures exist and many train from young to kill them as they are great for wealth, the growth of the child, helping keep people safe and materials! Oh the amazing materials!” Phoenix nearly goes fanatical at that last part.
“Wouldn’t higher rank civilizations be the apex predators ruling over the worlds without having to fight against beasts?”
‘I mean, wouldn’t having crazy tech like teleport and stuff help you deal with that sort of dangerous thing, no?’

“No. The universe contains many, many different things. Only planets with such weak energy and creatures like yours would allow for this sort of total planetary domination while peaceful are completely useless to growth of individuals and races as a whole.” Phoenix states matter-of-factly.
I guess I could understand the notion. People even on Earth always strive for more and better so I guess other races feel the same way and so they chase after this evolution thing…
‘Deep, didn’t think I had such profoundness to me hehe.’ I continue to self-inflate my ego with a passion, probably going to be the last time anyways.
“Done!” Phoenix declares with pride. Then it returns to ask me with one of the tentacles facing towards me “You have anything else to do on this rock before we leave?”
‘Good question. Do I have anything left to do here?’ I somberly think about whether to leave a message or something or should I collect anything but there really wasn’t anything I could think of. It reminded me again of how depressing my life was.
‘Well, maybe I should leave a note for my family? Yeah. Probably a good idea.’ So I grab my laptop and start typing up a short email just so that those who raised me knew I was going to be alright even though they would probably never see me again which, surprisingly, didn’t really bother me much considering my hermit life choices and tendencies.
“Dear family, I decided to make a trip somewhere really far-away. There isn’t any real way for me to communicate from there as wifi and cell reception won’t really work but I will be fine and I hope you don’t worry too much. Hope you all stay healthy!” Send…
‘Oh god this sounds like a fucking stranger messaging them. Ah whatever, I won’t even be here to get the reply so who cares. Now just delete my internet history and I should be good to go.’ I bitterly smile at my email and fond internet memories as well as get rid of the not so fond stuff, damn important that part.
“Your race is quite blunt in communication I see.” Phoenix chimes in.
“Yeah, yeah. Let’s just get going.” I reply a little upset at its comment.
“Very well. This might just hurt a little but overall we should be, totally, fine.” And with another softer almost whisper like tiny voice the word “probably” slides right past my attention.
……….
I stand in the middle of my living room with all the furniture having been moved out of the way holding the egg in my hand while Phoenix still keeps fiddling with it.
I stare at the ball in my hand as some of the engravings start lighting up in a slightly bluish glow like little stars in the sky. The ball closes itself as Phoenix retracts back into me. It starts slowly spinning like it did when Phoenix first popped out but it started getting faster and faster as time went on.
Cold sweat dripping down my back and forehead.
“Phoenix, you sure this will be fine? And where are we going?” I ask nervously while reprimanding myself for not having asked shit about what’s going to happen.
“ Don’t worry, though we aren’t in the egg as stated. I managed to get a stable enough algorithm for you and me to travel through and it will be sending us towards a high energy planet like a metal to a magnet.” It reassuringly says.
‘Wait we’re supposed to be in the egg? The fuck Phoenix!’ Yet again, my mind falls into chaos as I realize I should really start getting clarification on such important things. Yet, no time to ask for more as the soft blue glow starts spreading from the ball and expanding outwards in a dome like manner around the ball slowly starting to cover up my arms as it begins to swallow me in its light. The bright glow too much for my eyes so I had to close them and soon I heard rumbling as the ball lifted off my hand to which Phoenix just said its working.
I hear a clear and very crisp “Ting”’ sound… after which, everything was dark and I faint.

The War Wolves
If you’re good at something, never do it for free. That’s what Ludgar’s uncle taught him. Sellswording isn’t the most glamorous life, but it pays well if you’re good at it. Interesting as well, if you ignore the very probable possibility of a swift, sticky end at the hands of pointy things. When the mercenary lifestyle grows incompatible with the Kingdom of Evandis, he and his merry band of misfits set off west to seek those with a better proclivity for warfare and with much deeper pockets. At his side: a wandering barbarian who teeters on the edge of savagery, a girl who would have a heart of gold if she didn’t pawn it off to the nearest fence, a wannabe knight who is absolutely overcompensating for something, and the last person in the universe who should be anywhere close to magic. But, as most mercenaries find, the right decisions are quite an expensive luxury, and the wrong ones happen to pay very well. Then again, what are the value of morals to a hungry wolf?
