《The Chronicle of a Witch》Chapter 26 Learning About the Past a Little

There were five classes in this school. The normal class, the Class A to the Class D and the special Class, Class S. Naturally, the Class S was only for the top five students while the other classes were also divided by their rank.

The Class S was special, as not only they were exempted from all the study, they also didn’t have to go to the school every day. In fact, if the students wanted it, they only needed to come to the school on the Examination day. Naturally, if they failed the exam, they would be demoted to the lower Class. It seemed, every three months there would be an examination and the classes would be rearranged at that time. So, even if I was in Class S today, if my rank was dropped into, let’s say, the fiftieth rank, I would be demoted into Class B or C.

Yes, the competition was fierce in this school. That was why I planned on studying to the best of my ability. However, I was lucky because I didn’t have to go to school every day. Also, even though Class S didn’t have to go to a class, but we could enter any class. If it were on Earth, this situation was really weird. I never saw or heard a class being held like this, but it seemed that it was a normal common sense in this world.

Because this academy tended to teach the students about weak Spells but with a lot of variation, there were a lot of subjects to be learned here. Besides the basic Elemental Magic, there were also Life Magic, Charm Magic, Curse Magic, Arithmancy, General Magic, Death Magic, and so on. Speaking of which, Death Magic, Curse Magic, and other dark-sounding Magic was illegal, unless they had the license to study those Magic. Naturally, there wouldn’t be a lot of people who could get the license, so, those classes were mostly empty.

Should I get the license to study those dark-sounding Magic? I meant, I didn’t need to study those Magic since I already knew some, but I showed that I could use Dark Magic in the examination before, so they knew about it too. Would they capture me because I could use Dark Magic without a license?

Well, for now, I had to study History and Geography first. Speaking of which, dark-sounding Magic was not on test in three months, so it caused even fewer students wanted to learn them. And since no one learned them, it would be unfair for it to be on the test, and it became a vicious cycle…

Anyway, let’s forget about those dark-sounding Magic. Since I learned Magic by depending on the memories that this body had, and the owner of this body learned Magic mostly by trials and errors, she didn’t get the basics of Magic at all. Mostly, she did it by using her intuition. And that was also the reason why I couldn’t use advanced Magic. I didn’t have a good intuition like the previous owner of this body. That was why I wanted to learn everything from the very basic.

So, I entered the Fire Element class for now. Just when I entered the Class, the whole classroom sunk into an awkward silence. As I sat down on the empty seat next to a timid looking girl, the girl stood up, took her books from the table, and moved to another seat.

…did she avoid me?

Nah, it must be my imagination. Yep, it must be just my imagination. So, I ignored it and opened the book that I received when I chose to enter this class. Introduction to Fire Elements Magic.

Just as I read, the teacher entered the class, but her face stiffened when she saw me. I wondered why…

“Cough, good morning everyone. We will start learning from the basics. Let’s open your textbook…”

Perhaps it was only my imagination, but the teacher seemed like she was nervous for some reason. She was young, so perhaps she was a new teacher? So, she stuck to the textbook because she didn’t want to teach something wrong to the students. If there were something wrong, she would blame the textbook… yep, that was what I thought.

Even though she didn’t make a mistake at all during the lesson, I felt that learning everything from the textbook could be done by reading the textbook. I thought that the teacher would give something more than what the textbook taught us. If she didn’t, then I thought it would be more effective to learn everything from the textbook.

After that, I joined two other classes and the teachers were… doing it like the first teacher. Even though one of the teachers was a middle-aged man, he still taught us from the textbook. Seriously, did every class teach us like this?

Also, speaking of which, I wanted to believe that it was only my imagination, but it seemed all the students avoided me. Every time I entered a classroom, the classroom would fall into an awkward silence. Also, when I sat next to someone, that person would avoid me and sit in another place. Well, in the last class, I intentionally came a bit later so there was only a single seat in the class. The victim, cough, the person that sat next to me was the timid girl from the first class and when she noticed that all the seats were taken, her face turned into a desperate one. Was it really uncomfortable to sit next to me? When I tried speaking to her, she jumped in scare and asked the teacher that she wanted to go to the toilet… and she never returned. I wondered if they really avoided now…

Just as I wondered about it after class, I saw the Iron Lady whose name I still didn’t know until now. If I remembered correctly, even in the opening ceremony, she was still the one who acted normal. Perhaps she would teach normally even though I was in the class?

Before I knew it, I followed her to her next class. I sat down and as expected, everyone avoided me. Oh, right, I forgot to mention this, but today, only the first-year students were in school. They intentionally separated the first-year and the others so the first-year students would know where their classes were. It seemed in the past, there were a lot of first-year students that entered the wrong classroom and it caused a bit of chaos. So, right now, they tried to teach the freshmen about the classes they attended to.

The Iron Lady saw me in her class, but her expression didn’t change much. Well, her face was always cold, so I didn’t know whether she was surprised or not when she saw me. Anyway, it seemed she didn’t really care whether I was in her classroom or not.

And the lesson started. Unlike the other teachers, the Iron Lady taught us without sticking to the textbook. Of course, she sometimes used the textbook as references, but only sometimes. Most of the time, she didn’t even look at the textbook at all. It was far better than the other classes I had taken!

Just as I happily listening to her, the Iron Lady abruptly looked at me and called out my name. “Miss Fey, can I have a few words with you for a second?”

I nodded subconsciously and followed her out of the classroom. The Iron Lady faced me and a hint of apology flashed in her eyes.

“Why do you come to this class?” She asked right to the point.

“Er, to study, of course,” I replied honestly.

“You can use ten elements, so you don’t need to study the basics of Element Magic again, do you?” She asked.

“…would you believe me if I said that what I learned is from trials and errors?”

The Iron Lady was stunned. I could make out a word impossible uttered from her lips, but there was no sound at all. It seemed she didn’t believe me.

“…although what you said is unbelievable, but I believe you only want to learn about the basics of every Element Magic, don’t you?” When she saw me nodding to this question, she continued. “If that’s the case, I ask you to stop coming to the class. Your presence distracts the whole class. If you only want to study the basics of Element Magic, I can teach you privately so you will not disturb the other students. Will you do it?”

Eh, why did my presence distract the other students? I meant, I didn’t even do anything distracting!

But if my presence distracted the other students and that meant that I couldn’t go to any of the classes, I could only nod to her suggestion. Though, I still wanted to know the reason why they were distracted.

“…alright, I will wait for you in the library then,” I said dejectedly.

After that, we returned to the class. I picked my books and bag and exited the classroom. I felt that I was bullied, just like in my previous school. I was sad…

To forget this sadness that welling up inside of my heart, I started reading a book about History. Learning History was fun. I felt like reading a novel after all. For example, the story about the Battle of Astaroth. It happened long before the Acrodia Empire was formed. Astaroth, the Demon Lord of the North, invaded the human territories with his powerful army. The war lasted for thirty years before the God of Thunder Brian, the Goddess of Ice Briana, the God of Knowledge and Wisdom Fritz, the God of War Raymond, and the Goddess of Justice Borealis chose their Champions for the first time. The Champions fought the wars and became the Heroes before long. After that, they fought into the enemy’s main stronghold and killed the Demon Lord Astaroth with their combined strength. The fight was described in great detail and when I read it, it sounded like an epic fight.

However, thinking about Astaroth… he was one of the Dungeon Master in the north area. I remembered when he complained about the long war that happened at that time. His powerful army was actually a bunch of Golems that he created to open the land for farming purposes. He complained that the humans attacking them just because they opened some lands and wanted to cultivate those lands. Also, I remembered that Astaroth only said that the humans were like pests and no matter how many times he repelled them, they would always come back to attack him and his Golem.

In the end, stronger humans destroyed all the Golems that he painstakingly made and invaded his Dungeon while ‘freeing’ the Beast-kins that lived around the Dungeon. By ‘freeing’, I meant that they captured those Beast-kins and enslaved them. As for the Heroes, they entered the Dungeon and they only entered the tenth floor before being defeated by the Mithril Golem that guarded that floor. Well, three of them retreated from the Mithril Golem, but Astaroth stopped the three of them… and made a deal with them. He wanted the Heroes to return all the Beast-kins they captured and they could say that they defeated the Astaroth. Also, Astaroth wouldn’t open the land anymore. Or the other choice was for Astaroth to seriously send all his Mithril Golems that numbered more than ten thousand, his Adamantite Golem that numbered more than two thousand, his Steel Golems that were countless and other Metallic Golems that were countless.

In the end, the Heroes chose the first option and they returned all the Beast-kins they captured and said that they had defeated the Demon Lord Astaroth. After that, both Astaroth and the human lived in peace and the area around Astaroth’s Dungeon became a restricted area and no one stepped into that area for countless years.
