《Spread of Chaos》Ch 4 - Dead men walking

Ohm Icura was hoping his casual show of power would go a long way towards convincing the young ones to accept his offer. His combination of threats, intimidation, and fear had served him well in the alliance so far and he saw no reason that should change now.
He couldn't help but think of the students as children, despite the fact that in this world, many married at their age. He knew little of their world, but the oracles had been clear the souls the god would choose would come from a developed region of a nonmagical world. The ancients had dealt with enough otherworlders to leave enough clues as to what that most likely meant. Long lives, late marriages, and few children, generally meaning lower maturity age levels compared to the humans of this world. He glanced at Navier, the elves were a bit like that but on a more gradual scale.
"Aaaaahhhh!"
Suddenly the scream of one then many of the students rang out. Ohm Icura turns around, startled. From out of the woods shambled walking corpses, one of which had already gotten its rotting hands on a blond hair boy and was about the sink its teeth into a defending forearm.
"Deadmen!" Exclaimed Jharak pulling his short sword from beneath his robes and charging towards the boy. Before he can get there a stream of water flies into the open mouth of the Deadman, then turns to ice, freezing the mouth open but mostly harmless for now. Bihai turns her attention to other threats, leaving the actual destruction of the undead to Jharak.
Deacon Moorzu's face is full of rage and glee at the chance to decimate the undead, his specialty as a bearer of the light. The fact that these are pagan undead is a source of joy he cannot keep to himself. The shafts of light that fall from the sky burn and melt the undead while healing the living.

Navier's gust of wind knock the undead off their feet and away from the students, those that haven't run off into the woods in their panic. Unfortunately, the undead are largely immune to the deadlier attack of wind, as they do not bleed.
Ohm Icura drops deadly blocks of stone on the heads of those immobilized by wind and water. While doing so, he calls for the students that have run off to come back, a feat that the children could not yet appreciate, even if they weren't about to die.
Leon and Lisa had not run off, but mostly because Lisa was holding on to him so tightly, he had no choice. Chris ran towards to crowd in front of them, that being where the bulk of the undead were, to see if he could help. Leon looked around himself to make sure that none were sneaking up on them, but to his surprise one had almost made it towards him and Lisa, these things have NO presence, he thought.
Like looking at a tree in the forest or a rock in a quarry, my mind isn't telling me that they aren't there, it's telling me that they SHOULD be there! Too scary!
Leon dragged Lisa away from the Deadman and towards the instructors, who were doing a fairly good job of keeping the students alive. Bobby Mindal being the only visible exception, despite the shield Leon assumed he got from whichever god brought him here. The boy was thrashing under three corpses, melting even as they took chunks of flesh out of him.
"Aiiiyyeee!"
"Aaahh!"
"Run!"
Screams came from the woods nearby as the students who ran in there discover more of the Deadmen drawn toward the commotion. Those left on the path huddle together, which allow the instructors to better able protect them. Chris, having found no opportunity to help, puts himself between the others and any undead too near. Billy and those with weapons, don't even try to use them, leaving Leon to think Chris would have been better off with them.

"Freaking zombies, man!" someone exclaims.
"They...they aren't zombies, the box says they're called Deadmen." Another of the students informs the rest.
"What Box?" Leon and some of the others shout.
"Just... Just ask what are those, when you look at the zombies, I mean Deadmen." The voice responds. Leon thinks It might be Cassidy Breman.
Some of the students continue to ask what she means, but Leon does exactly as she says.

Whoa! That... could be useful. Leon looks around and it seems most of the students are seeing the boxes too. He looks for Samantha and sees her hanging on to Billy, his heart jumps for a second but he figures he must have been the closest person to her, no big deal, or perhaps she was just used to his presence. It's my own fault, I should have been by her side instead of talking with Chris and Lisa.
Soon enough the Deadmen are finished off by the instructors. Ohm Icura looks around at the carnage with relief. Despite the surprise attack, only one of the 29 children are dead, but eight others ran into the trees in panic. If we weren't under contract, I would let them die and simply take those god weapons, but...
"Navier! Jharak! with me to find the missing children. Bihai, Moorzu, I leave the safety of the rest to you."
With that, he and the two instructors he called swiftly ran into the woods to retrieve their wayward charges.
The water and light adepts guide the children further along the scant trail, keeping a sharp eye out for more Deadmen. The children though frightened are distracted by the boxes they can use to tell them about this new world.
when used on things lithe trees or the ground, it doesn't reveal much information other than the name or known use but they soon discover how to use it on themselves, which Leon does.

Valor and Violence
Valor and Violence is a series of short stories following different, yet all equally colourful, characters set in the same world. Birth of a Legend, the first short, follows Captain Erskine Erwell, a newly promoted Captain in the Calandorian Royal Navy, charged with protecting his people from all who would do them harm. Great news for the Calandorian citizens, bad news for the Skjar reavers that ravage the shores in search of slaves. But when a small reaver fleet slips the net and escapes to the southern jungles of Marduk, Erwell must fight a war on two fronts; one against the raiders, and a far more difficult war against the hostile landscape. If he can't find allies in this strange land, he may end up being the one in need of saving. The first part of the second short story will be uploaded on Saturday, the 11th of June, following Ferez Ahud, an aspiring young battlemage charged with the unsavoury job of 'terminating' a rogue member of his college. But how this nobody of a mage became a fugitive remains a mystery, and when the answer is discovered, the tables are turned and the hunter becomes the prey. I'll be uploading chapters of more in-universe short stories each week or as close to, work permitting. Content Guidelines: course language and violence
