《Curses》20. Fixing some old problems

With his new sword in hand, Tyler turns and looks at me, “1 to 10 how did I do.” He then starts to go through some forms with his new sword, getting used to it.
“About 9 out of 10. You didn’t do anything really wrong, just somethings you could have done better. I’ll show you tomorrow but we’ve been in here for 10 hours and need to get home.” I say back.
Tyler agrees and we head out of the tower. On the drive back I realize that {Pestilence} is in the system. That someone could just use it, not knowing its full capabilities. That they could wipe out nations with it. So I took a gamble.
“Um, hello, system can I modify a spell you copied?” I say to thin air as Tyler looks at me funny.
[WHY]
“Oh, it actually responded. Well, um, {Pestilence} is a little bit, um, unstable. I may have not set the ability to control who gets infected. Could I, um, fix that?” I say nervously as Tyler catches on to what I’m trying to do.
[YOU MAY MAKE THE CHANGES]
[THEY WILL BE CHECKED]
Then I was in a black void and I could feel I had my old power back. Quickly getting to work I started to change the spell in question. I first pulled up the spell form and scanned for where I could include a control run set. It would have to be big for this level of spell. I couldn’t find one. Starting to panic I asked a question. “Could I make a substitute spell to replace this one?”
[NO]
“Oh no,” I said out loud. I’d have to remake parts of the spell. Considering the fact that I was a proper tier 5, at least for now, I could probably make it better. Maybe. Pulling up the old spell form I got to work making it again. The first thing I noticed was how inefficient the spreading part of the curse was. I could probably gain the space I need for the control runes if I could fix them up.

I started to improve the spread runes, changing some entirely and swapping around other runes. Then I worked on the mana flow for the section. After who knows how long, everything fit into place. I now had the space for the control runes, slotting them in, and started to integrate them. When that was done I set the valid targets to tower-generated beings and demons.
I did feel a little bad that I was nerfing the only tier 5 curse but it had to happen. Finally finishing the spell I was pulled back to reality.
[SPELL HAS BEEN UPDATED]
Breathing deeply, I ponder on the fact that I just, probably, saved the world. I may have been the cause of it but hey when has that ever stopped anyone from claiming credit. Tyler looks a bit confused about what happened.
“So, I kinda know what just happened but to be safe, what just happened?” Tyler asks me.
“You know that spell I was talking about yesterday before we got interrupted?” I ask.
“Ya, it was {Pestilence} right? Why?”
“I may have forgotten what a fucking mess that spell was, It spread to anyone who didn’t cast the spell.”
“Did you fix it?”
“Ya.”
“Then that calls for more vodka.”

Journey West 5000
With her parents murdered and her brother abducted, a trainee Monk of the Gun pursues the one responsible, the Bull Demon King, undefeated Warlord of the Crimson Army.Struggling to track down her enemy while braving the dangers of the wilds, she enlists the help of Sun Wukong, but 500 years under a mountain have taken its toll. Unstable and weakened, will he be more hindrance than help? Can he become the warrior he once was?A Monk and a Monkey journey across a world...... where the remnants of technology are seen as magic, while pockets of humanity strive to drag themselves out of ignorance.... where the descendants of animal-human hybrids, once created as instruments of war, now seek to dominate the world as demons.... where beings who call themselves Immortals and Gods preoccupy themselves with selfish pastimes, ignoring everything else. Among other things, a story about growth, grit, and being better than the person you were yesterday. Here's my rambling on why I'm writing Journey West 5000. Journey West 5000 is my crazy ambitious writing project to adapt a classic epic called "Journey to the West" for a global, modern audience. It's a sci-fi story disguised as fantasy, and has some road trip + monster of the week elements (as does the original Journey to the West). No system, definitely no harem, gradual power progression. Hmm, what else can I put here so potential readers know what to expect? My writing style for now is mostly "show don't tell", because I believe that readers don't need to have everything pointed out to them, and that they should be allowed to make up their own minds about characters based on the actions of those characters. I'm also trying to be less long-winded (a weakness pointed out by some friends) in order to write according to something Neil Gaiman said, which is to write as though I'm the one who has to pay for every word, not the reader. This will bring down my chapter word counts, and might drive away potential readers, but I believe there's value in learning to compress and be concise. All chapters posted here will have been edited. Constructive criticism, comments, and feedback would be very much welcome and appreciated. Please, please help point out any typos or grammatical mistakes, I'm striving to minimize those as much as possible. Above all, I hope you enjoy my story.

8 160The Many Blades of Wuxia
Hundreds of years after the Heretic wars ended, life has returned to its blissful ignorant state that only peace could bring. Whilst the never-ending war between Man, Beast and Mutant rages on, most are not even aware of a war that happened between men. Its prophecies shattered, their remnants surviving only in obscure bard tales. One is about to grow. On the cracked face of the world, Essence storms and Beast Waves keep the citizenry locked atop the Emperor city of Qaelang. Knowledge of the past is as rare as the metals that flow into the hands of Sacred Artists and at the root of it all are whispers of a malignant force, ancient and terrible. Holding humanity back from achieving greatness, but hiding too are secrets best left untouched. Balance, discipline and order have held Qaelang secure since time immemorial, the powers within claiming to adhere to them. None are more fearful of change than the ones with the most to lose, but change is coming. Blade of Wuxia is a long character-focused epic fantasy with progression and growth. It's about a boy's quest to become powerful enough to save those he cares most for and give them a better life. It's set in a world of hidden pasts and uncovering them will set him on a path that shakes the Empire. As this is a rewrite that took on a wildly different spin, reviews are most welcome and help me do better. What can the reader expect? A Wuxia society set in a High fantasy world. People are only doing what they know and may have mistaken beliefs. A clever resourceful protagonist with human flaws A far-reaching hidden fantasy world, rich in history. Multiple points of view are used to follow the story to its natural conclusions, not every NPC has all the answers, but there is one MC in this book. Progression will take time and sometimes even unknowingly. MC is not trained in the ways and knowledge must be tempered against experimentation. Release Schedule. 2 chapters a week, family and work permitting. Only if I'm happy with the chapter will I release it. That being said I am open to revision should an articulated critical response show merit. This story is not completed yet but I do have a general idea of what the end looks like for both MC's (yes both) Ultimately feedback will be most influential on the progression of release as it's you guys I'm looking to entertain. Expected Changes None really, I'm writing as I go and have a path planned for 6 books Chapter release rate might change if we take off and feedback starts flowing, but for now, it is just about making sure Arcs flow smoothly onto the next. Cover, yes absolutely! If there is enough interest I will open a Patreon account and use the first proceeds to commission an EPIC cover and hopefully a few scary artworks of our brave Cultivators and the foes they face.
