《Limits》Chapter 20: Treating Those in Need

I headed to the doctor's house, for my last task of the day. There were a few patients with some sort of flu, or with fatigued muscles, but it was mostly quiet. Sometimes, there would be more severe injuries, like broken arms or legs. That was mostly kids, they usually had stupid ideas which resulted in such injuries. I was responsible for taking care of the patients with flu, or other light injuries. I would only call for the doctor, if someone had a serious injury. Although Nick would take of such patients, I still had to help him out. In such cases, I was more like a nurse, which mean "pass me that", "bring me this" and so on. Other than that, the doctor was rather carefree. He slept in his chair, and didn't seem to care much. There was an obvious advantage to such work. It wasn't very physically demanding, this meant I could restore my strength faster. While I was treating one of the patients, I wondered about my roommate's proposal. 'Running away alone is easier. Of course, in case they went back on their word, after that one year agreement. On the other hand, she would teach me some stuff. Not only could it be useful for running away, I would retains those skills' I thought. The problem was, I wouldn't be alone. I could trust myself, but could I trust her? 'I don't know yet, I will think about it more later' I thought. Although my plans didn't change. I would take revenge for what they did to me. That wedding was only the beginning. There were strong people who knew how to fight in this world. They were referred to as Warriors. They had strong bodies, and excellent combat skills. Stuff like bear or wolf? Not even an opponent of such Warrior. Hunters had to resort to trickery and numbers to hunt such animals, but Warriors didn't. Warriors were very rare in small villages. Maybe some larger villages possessed one or two. Rand and his granddaughter could be classed as fake Warriors. In other words, strong hunters. This was obviously thanks to that mysterious manual they possessed. But they were still nothing in comparison to the real Warriors. These type of strong hunter, usually held high positions in villages. In small villages, they were Village Chiefs. In larger, more populated villages, strong hunters usually worked as right or left hand men to the Village Chief. The Village Chief would be a Warrior in such case. The Village that so called young master came from, was such a village. The Village Chief was a Warrior. I didn't know how strong he was, but surely much stronger than Rand. I was of lost in my thoughts, until I heard some profanities coming from the person, I was supposed to treat. Apparently, I spent too much time on treat him. I wrapped up the treatment, and waited for the next patient. A burly man entered the house, while dragging something behind him. When I saw what it was, I was shocked. It was her, my roommate. She covered in blood. Her arm and leg was broken, and her face swollen up from beating. I furrowed my brows, but said nothing. I gently picked her up, and laid her on the treatment table. Those were serious, very serious injuries, therefore I went to fetch the doctor quickly. Nick was in the room next door, sleeping on his chair as usual. I said "Doctor, we have a patient with very severe injuries". Nick opened his eyes, and got up from his rocking chair. I followed after him to the treatment room. He saw the woman on the treatment, bleeding and with broken limbs. When the burly man saw the doctor, he said a bit panicked "She broke the rules!". The doctor replied calmly "I won't treat her". I was amazed at his answer. I thought doctors were supposed to help those in need, apparently he didn't care. Nick then faced me, and continued "If you want boy, you can try treating her yourself". I furrowed my brows. 'Is he for real? Me? An amateur? Treat these kind of injuries?' I thought. The doctor turned around to everybody else, and announced. "Today's visitations end here, come back another day". That was that, he simply left. Other stood up, and left as well, including that burly man. I was left alone with my roommate in critical condition. 'What a bunch of sick bastards' I thought. I was angry. They treated her like this, but wouldn't even provide treatment for what they did. I couldn't leave her alone in such state, I was still a Human after all. A;though I've seen the doctor work, I never attempted such things myself. 'Can I even do this?' I asked myself. I had to try. She was unconscious, that was good. Otherwise, the pain she would experience, would just add more trauma to what she already went through. I began from stoping the bleeding. This was the easiest part of her treatment, I just needed some medicine and bandages. She had stab wounds on her stomach for some reason. This wasn't simply rule breaking, this was some sort of attack. This was done on purpose, to inflict more pain. I took care of her stomach too, and moved on to her face. He had a few teeth missing, but I could do nothing about it. I could only clean the blood, and apply medicine. 'Perhaps a real doctor could replace her missing teeth, but I'm no doctor' I thought. With those wounds taken care of, I moved on to her broken arm. I've seen how it's done, but that didn't mean I could simply do it. As far as I was aware, I had to realign the bones first. My first try ended in failure. I knew where the arm was broken, but I couldn't see the bones. I had to do everything blindly. Altogether, this took me five tries. With the bones finally aligned, I applied medicine all over her hand, then bandaged it. I also used a few square sticks, to make sure the bones wouldn't misalign again. It was very difficult, but I did it somehow. 'All that's left, is her broken leg' I thought, and sighed. The day was coming to an end, as the sun started slowly disappearing behind the horizon. 'I need to finish this' I thought, and went back to work. The procedure to fix her leg, was pretty much the same as with the arm. The leg was more difficult though. I had to give it a few good tries, before I was able to align the bones properly. At least, what I thought to be properly. The rest was easy. I applied some medicine, then wrapped her leg up in bandages and sticks. I sat down, and rested a bit. 'This was so difficult, I'm drained from my strength' I thought. Soon after, the doctor walking in and said "You should leave now. Take her with you as well". I looked at him angrily, but replied "Fine". I picked her up very gently. This was difficult, because I couldn't grab her broken arm or leg. Somehow I managed to grab her without wasting my work, and carried her outside. We shortly arrived at our house, where I laid her in bed. There was some food waiting for both of us. I ate my part of the dinner, and left hers on the table. I wasn't heartless, even though I was hungry. She would need that food, especially since she sustained such injuries. I retrieved one the pillows from the bed, and went to a corner to get some sleep. I had to do my tasks the next day. That didn't change at all. 'I will ask her what happened tomorrow, when she wakes up' I thought, and fell asleep. The next morning, my roommate was still asleep. I decided to just let her rest, and headed towards my first task of the day. I returned for my breakfast, which was waiting on the table as usual. She must've woken up during that time, because her food was gone. There was a small note, someone slipped in through the doors. I picked it up and read it "She will not receive any food, if she can't work. You will receive your share as usual, when you do your tasks". I furrowed my brows. 'How heartless can they be? She got beaten up like that, and yet they expect her to work? Bastards... Fucking bastards' I though. I crumbled the note, and threw it away. I grabbed my breakfast, and ate while asking "Are you asleep?". There was no reply, which meant she must've been asleep. My break ended shortly after that, which meant I had to leave for my next task. At the Workshop, I forged one Steel Ingot. The good news was, I had enough materials, to forge something for myself. This allowed me to melt the metal, and create a small bar. I had to flatten that, and then shape it with the use of grindstone. I had my "dagger", but it wasn't sharp. 'Butter knives are sharper than this, but this will soon change' I thought. Before anything else, I had to finish that second ingot. I finished the second ingot, but I had very little time left, before Grond would come in. I decided to sharpen my dagger the next day. The blacksmith Grond was as always on time. He inspected my ingots, and said you know what already. Back at our house, I noticed that my roommate was nolonger sleeping. She was in pain, I could tell that much. I closed the doors behind me, and walked towards the bed.
