《P I G S》6. Death

A waft enters my nose as I slowly awaken.
At first, I ignored it as I wanted to stay in dreamland for even one more moment.
The gentle breeze of the morning air waved across my face as I lay there. However, as I lay there the smell got stronger.
I realized that the smell was rancid and unkind. I sat up hastily and covered my nose.
At the moment no one else was awake.
I looked to see if Matilda was still up from when I had fallen asleep and it seems that she had drifted off to sleep and at some time.
The vomit that was there yesterday seemed to disappear.
More concerning for me was the smell.
It seemed to be coming from right outside the church. I got up fully and was about to step outside the church.
However, as I was about to step out of the church A sense of fear filled me.
I was scared to go outside of the church into the unknown.
I brought my feet away from the front door.
Still trying to figure out what the smell was, I remembered that Bruno was still outside.
I called out to him
“Bruno! Are you awake? Do you know where that smell is coming from”.
He didn’t respond. I kept yelling to see if I could get him to answer.
At this point, some of the people in the church started to wake up.
Anxiety filled my body as Bruno didn’t respond and I managed to get enough courage to step outside of the church.
I turned the corner around the church to see if Bruno was there.
When I turned the corner I saw a sight so horrific that I couldn’t even scream.
It was a corpse. I could only assume it was Bruno however I couldn’t even tell.

The face was mangled as if it had been chewed on.
Most of the flesh was missing and from what was there it looked like it had been picked at and ripped by birds.
As I looked at this I was reminded of a scene from two sleeps ago with a certain crow person.
The last thing I noticed was that even though I could not discern the face you could see the fear.
I couldn’t even scream.
My jaw dropped agape in shock.
My stomach churned and I vomited last night's meal onto the floor.
A cold sweat filled my body as I ran back into the church.
At this point, everyone else in the church was up except Matilda.
Ezra, seeing the fear on my face asked me
“What’s wrong Dante, you looked like you saw a ghost.”
My body shaking, I managed to spit out
“B-Brunos dead”.
Shock filled the entire room.
Annabelle and Wilson cried.
Possibly from fear or sadness of his loss, I did not know.
Amar rubbed his glasses in disbelief.
Cheryl and Jack held each other's hand in shock and the Albino Girl stood there with a stoic face.
Ezra's face went serious and he walked out of the church to confirm the body.
A few moments later he came back with a saddened look. I heard him mumble “rest in peace”
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The mood afterward was depressing and low.
No one talked and it seemed everyone was thinking to themselves.
The only people still doing anything were Annabelle and Wilson as it seemed that Wilson got over it pretty quickly and wanted to play patty cake.
Matilda had still not woken up.
Suddenly a strange metal sound filled the church.
After the metal sound ended everyone started getting up.
I asked Ezra who was closest to me

“where is everyone going?”
He turned to me and said
“that noise means it's one hour before noon. For some reason, the monsters aren't around for that one hour.”
I didn’t know what he meant by monsters but, I assumed he was talking about the pigs I met a few days ago.
I wanted to ask him to confirm my suspicions but I wasn't sure.
As we walked out of the church I was about to turn to look at the others to ask them what to do however before I could Ezra whispered into my ear
“Do not look at others while outside the church.”
I was about to look at him, however, I decided to take his words seriously as I remembered the rules.
A cold sweat fell down my back as I thought about what he said. I whispered back to him
“what should I do?”.
After a moment of silence, he said
“come help me look for some berries just grab as many as you can and I will check if they are poisonous when we get back to the church.”.
I nodded and then realized he was probably not looking at me so I said
. “Okay”.

Tower of Somnus
When humanity first encountered alien life, we were judged and found wanting. The Galactic Consensus interviewed our leaders and subjected us to a battery of psychological tests to determine our progress as a society. They found us to be selfish, wasteful, impulsive, and boorish neighbors. Earth was blockaded and our collective encounter with our extrasolar neighbors rapidly faded from memory. All they left behind was a hypercomm relay and a handful of subscriptions to a massively multiplayer game that participants played in their sleep. The Consensus said that it would let us interact with our neighbors in a controlled setting. That it would teach us to be better members of the galactic community. The megacorporations that controlled Earth ignored the game until they learned that the powers earned from clearing dungeons were just as real when day broke. Magic, supernatural abilities and rumors exploded from nothing and a subscription to The Tower of Somnus became a status symbol. Katherine ‘Kat’ Debs doesn’t have much, but it could be worse. Born in an arcology, she was assigned a job in the megacorporation that raised her almost as soon as she could work. Despite the stability of her corporate life, she wanted something more. A chance to claw her way up the rigid social and financial ladder to make something of herself. A chance that wouldn’t come naturally to someone as familiar with dark alleyways and the glint of steel as she was with office work and corporate niceties.Book One is up on Kindle Unlimited as of 7/6/22 - https://www.royalroad.com/amazon/B0B2X3L8H5

Urban Divinity
He slowly backs up until his back is against the wall like my own, "You're..my neighbor?" He points to my door and I nod my head quickly. He hums softly, "You been here a while?" He asks and I nod my head once again. He chuckles, "Ya head hurt?" I nod again but stop as he laughs softly, "I-I mean.. no.. it doesn't." My cheeks burn red as I look at my shoes, "I-It doesn't hurt.." I repeat like a dummy and listen to him clear his throat, "So do you actually live there or was it bull?" He nods to my door and I play with my fingers, "Yeah.. I do.." I feel his eyes watch me and I quickly stop. "You live with your boyfriend or do you like sweatshirts that reach your knees?" He teased, making a giggle slip past my lips. I look away to the floor again, "I-I like big shirts... a lot." I mumble softly and he nods his head, "Hol' up." He puts his box down before walking over to one of the grey bins. I nosily watch as he pulls out a big grey sweatshirt, "Here." He holds it out for me to take and I stare at him with wide eyes, "F-For me?" I hesitantly grab the soft fabric as he chuckles, "Nah for ya mom." I puff my cheeks a little and give him a small glare, "Hush." He leans back against the wall and shakes his head, "It's cold out. You should put it on." ____________________________She was a shy girl from the city with no spine and a list of problems so long that it could touch the floor and roll off her shoes.
