《Love and Let Die (사랑해, 처리해줘)》Chapter 2

"I still remember bits and pieces. Seong Woo holding me in his arms, asking me how can I be so tiny. Telling me how much he loved that I'm so tiny. Me telling him I love him. Him kissing me like I was the most precious thing in the world to him. Then I remember that last message on my old phone that day: "Da In-a, I'm sorry. I loved you, I really did. You need to move on and live your life to the fullest. I'm sorry. Goodbye."

And then you disappeared. For almost 5 years.

AND NOW THIS??? WHAT THE HECK???"

Da In was mad. She immediately called Ha Neul to share the "fascinating" news.

- Ha Neul! This is important! Do you know who just popped up on my phone screen?

- Oh God, what? Did you win the lottery or something?

- Well... something like that. Sung Woo is back.

- WHAT? No way! What are you going to do?

- Nothing, obviously. It's been almost 5 years, I don't know if he even remembers me anymore.

"And it's not like it even matters now, he might even be married or something."

- Do you think he was in jail or something? I mean he WAS absent from everywhere for 5 years.

- Well, he was the kind of guy that might be arrested for anything… No, no way.

- Alright, I'm gonna go make dinner now, hasn't eaten anything the whole day. Let me know if you need anything, okay? Don't think too much about it.

"I didn't even change my number just in case you're back but now I'm absolutely out of it. Ugh, what am I even talking about, it's been almost 5 years and he dumped me. I've had 2 boyfriends after that, why should I care anymore? That's right, screw it!"

Da In decided that this incident was not worth contemplating. She ordered spicy noodles, poured herself a bubble bath, turned on her favorite playlist (idol groups, obviously), and tried to relax.

- God, I'm eating noodles while taking a bath, if someone saw me right now, they would probably think I'm the most pathetic person in the world.

When she finished with her pathetic relaxation, she came out to the balcony and looked at the night sky.

- Aaah, it's getting chilly now, October is approaching... You know, I was happy to just live in the same city as you, knowing that we might visit the same places, eat the same food, and buy the same groceries. I thought I moved on. Why am I so shaken by a stupid notification?

The next day at work, Da In was so deep in her routine that everybody could just feel the dreading aura surrounding her. Every time her thoughts were going back to Seong Woo, she would just bang her fist on the table and start typing so hard, that she almost broke the keyboard.

- Hey, it's lunchtime, wanna go grab something at the coffee shop?

She looked up startled, it was Woo Jin. He was looking at her with a very concerned face. Da In's stomach let out a faint rumbling noise.

- Oh God, yes! I'm starving, apparently.

- What have you been thinking about all morning? You looked very gloomy.

- It's nothing, just something unexpected that happened yesterday.

- Care to share?

- Nah, it's not important.

Woo Jin sighed.

- Okay, let's just eat then.

Da In was still deep in thought even during lunch. She would just randomly check her phone, make an angry face, and put it down with a slam. It was a miracle she didn't break it. Once the food was consumed, Woo Jin stood up first.

- I'll grab some coffee to go, want one?

- Sure, thanks.

She started walking towards the coffee shop exit, looking through her phone, when she suddenly bumped into someone and dropped the phone out of surprise. The person she bumped into caught the falling phone almost instantly.

- Oh God, thank you, I'm so sorry!

Da In looked up to see the person in front of her and rounded her eyes, shocked.

- Hi there.

The man smiled, she grabbed her phone from his hands so quickly as if he was someone she wouldn't trust with a device.

- What are you doing here?

- Our office moved to this building, I'm having lunch here.

- Right, enjoy your meal then.

Da In started walking but the man grabbed her hand making her stop.

- Hey, how have you been?

- Is there a problem?

Woo Jin was standing right behind them, holding two cups of coffee and staring at Da In's hand kept hostage. Da In shook her hand, setting herself free from the man's grip.

- No, all good, let's get back to work.

- Hey, don't disappear again, let's stay in touch from now on, right?

The man smirked and waved at them. Woo Jin frowned and looked at Da In.

- Who the hell was that?

- Min Ho, my ex.

Da In got another thing to be worried about now. Back in the office, she received a message she really did not want to see.

"It was nice seeing you today."

- Ugh, that's the second ex in two days appearing on my phone screen, was I jinxed or something?

She looked in the mirror on her table, framed her face with her hands, and smiled. "Oh well, I guess it can't be helped, I'm unforgettable."

Woo Jin noticed it from his seat and laughed.

Closer to the end of the day, Dong Wook came out of his office and called Da In to see him.

"Oh God, what now?"

- I've noticed a couple of accounts that were pre-approved by you which do not comply with our policies, care to explain what happened?

- Yeah, I contacted the owners and they are supposed to mail us some missing documents, which should be enough for the full approval.

- Da In... I understand you've been working here for quite a while and you have developed your own judgment, but the rules are rules, and pre-approving the accounts without a complete document set is not right. I hope we won't see this again in the future.

Da In left his office, came back to her desk, flopped on the chair, and sighed. She then got a message from Woo Jin.

"You good?"

She put her phone down, turned towards his table, and showed thumbs up.

Since the day's already pissed Da In more than enough with all its events, she decided to have dinner with Ha Neul and her boyfriend to blow some steam off.

- That jerk, you basically know all those policies by heart, YOU should be his boss!

- I told you many times - come work for us, we don't have that kind of attitude in my company.

Min Dong Hyun, Ha Neul's boyfriend. He was 35 and worked in his software company for more than a decade. He was respected enough to be able to bring in new employees so he was confident in his suggestion.

- Yeah, I know, but I don't wanna start from the bottom again. Plus I'm getting a raise in 2 months, I wanna milk this cow till the end.

Da In made a cutting gesture through the air and slammed her hand on the table.

- Once you buy an apartment, make sure to finally work for yourself. I don't think you should waste your time working with morons like Dong Wook. You need to work for yourself!

Ha Neul looked at her boyfriend and smiled. Da In didn't feel like smiling at all.

"Work for myself… easy to say for a girl who is completely dependent on her boyfriend and works just for the heck of it without ever worrying about money. Will I ever be able to be that free? Is this even freedom?

After dinner, she decided to take a walk home to clear her head. After all, she didn't live so far away from their favorite restaurant. Another convenience she liked about living in this neighborhood.

- Damn those evenings are getting chilly. I should start wearing a warmer jacket already.

When she got to her building, Da In stopped abruptly. Her ex-boyfriend Song Min Ho was standing in front of the entrance, obviously waiting for her.

"Oh, crap."
