《World 2.0(DROPPED)》Chapter 3: Studying and Testing

I woke up in my new bed. In an Inn. In a fantasy world.

Seems that I still have not gotten used to it yet. Probably should soon.

I sat up on the bed and began my mental list for today.

First agenda: Information. I need information because I don't know anything about this world. Maybe there is a holiday where you eat scorpions coming up or something. I won't know If it does before it happens. That's why I need it. How do I do it? That bartender seems nice. I'm just going to ask him about It.

Second agenda: Studying. I need to study my magic. I want to go out into the world immediately and be a man with the power at his fingertips, but I know that won't happen. I don't even know any spells to use. If they even use spells here. Do they? One more thing to find out about!

Third agenda… no third agenda!

First agenda: Information. Go!

I rush out of bed in a near sprint and immediately fall to the floor.

You should probably stand up before you do stuff like that, I thought.

I stand up from my hugging with the floor and head down to the bar to get something to eat while hopefully chatting with the bartender.

Yesterday afternoon at this place was packed full to the brim where the floor almost creaked under the pressure, with music so loud that you would be surprised it came from one person. Here in the morning, it is quite different. There was no music anymore, which was probably to help those people with a hangover from last night. The people here were not locals. All the locals had gone home to sleep in their own beds, while the travelers stayed here. Almost all of them were quiet, and probably had a hangover, so I decided to talk quietly, and not just shout for the bartender.

Yesterday the bartender had been a clean-shaven man in his early twenties. Today it was a full-beard in his early forties. I was almost too intimidated to even ask for breakfast, but my hunger was too great for something as simple as fear of death.

“Excuse me”, I said in an even voice. I hoped he could hear me.

“Yes, what is it?”, the bartender said. He had a very deep and intimidating voice.

“Could I have some breakfast?”, I asked, hoping I did not cost anything.

“Sure. Just need proof that you have a room, and then I'll get you something,” he said, with a smile on his bearded face. He seemed like a nice guy.

I showed him my room key, and he confirmed it was real. He told to wait a few minutes and walked into the back room.

So, how should I go about getting information? I know I need to ask the bartender about it. Can't ask the others because they have hangovers. Guess that I just need to improvise it.

The bartender came back with my food. It looked to be some sort of oatmeal and tasted quite good.

“So, are you new here?”, the bartender asks out of nowhere.

“Yes, actually. Just got here yesterday.”, I answered, glad I did not have to start the conversation.

“Oh, that's nice. So, which parts of the city do you like the most?”, He asks, with a smile on his face.

“I have not actually seen anything. I don't really know any notable places around here. What do you guys have around here?”, I ask, with a small smile.

“Well, we don't have that many things here actually. We have all the basic craft trade stuff like Blacksmith, Carpenter, and Leatherworker. We have a religious Temple for the clerics, you know, the guys who heal you when youre sick? We also have the marketplace And the Hunters Camp where some of the hunters meet up. We also have a couple of Inn with this one being the best obviously. Other notable places in town would be that mages shop and The Adventuring Guild. That's pretty much it.

I understand what all of them are except for one. The adventuring guild. Haven't heard that one before.

“The Adventuring Guild? What is that?”, I ask.

“Haven't heard of them before? They are not that new. Only 75 years old. They have been migrating to other places around the world, so you should have heard of them. Did you grow up in a smaller town or something?”, he asked.

Acting skills attack!

“Yes, actually. Grew up in one of the many newer towns, and before you ask, the town was nameless. It had less than fifty citizens, so calling it a town isn't really correct.”, I told him, hoping he would believe my story.

Critical hit!

“Oh, okay. Well, The Adventuring Guild is a guild where you, as the name implies, adventure. You do a quest from the quest-board for a reward. The guild takes a small percent of the reward, and they give you more quest to complete. They make money, while also making people happy.”, he explained.

“Well, thanks for the info. I think I'm going to head upstairs. Nice talking to you”, I tell him.

“Likewise, but before you go, whats your name”, he asks.

"Jack", I said.

"Nice to meet you, Jack. My names Darius"

Having heard his name, I head upstairs to begin studying and testing my magic.

When I got to the room, I had to decide which book to start with.

Mana or Primal magic? With the primal magic book I will be finding out how to make the spells, but with the Mana book, I will learn more about what I'm using to make the spells. The mana book it is.

I read the book about mana quite fast, as it was only a couple pages. Five pages to be exact. I did not learn that much more about than I already knew, but what is learned was critical. How to see your own mana reserves and how to cast magic.

How to see mana was kinda hard at the start because I had to find my ´inner eye´, and look within myself. When I looked inside myself, I should look after a blue pool. The size of the blue pool would determine my mana reserves. Simple.

How to cast magic was really hard to do at the start, but rather simple when you got a handle on it. You were supposed to direct your mana reserves trough your mana channels. If you wanted to make fire spew out of your right hand, then you had to direct you mana reserves through your mana channels leading to your right hand. Before you did that, though, you had to find your mana. The book actually warned that this was one of the hardest things any newly awakened mage had to do. To find it you needed to know what it was. I had to remember back to the time when I used my magic. What did I feel when I cast magic?

After having read that, I began trying to remember every detail. It took some time, but I, at last, got a hang of it.

Onto Primal magic!

With the mana book being only five pages long, I expected about the same for the primal magic book. Oh boy, was I wrong

The Primal magic book was a staggering 750 pages long. I, of course, was only going to read the basic ten pages at the start. I was glad I only tried to understand the first ten pages. I tried to understand some of the later pages and was almost beginning to cry at the amount of time I just stared one a single page. I could just not understand anything about it, so I just gave up on it.

I shall return to it at a later day.

The first page, of the overall ten pages, was kinda an extension of how to cast a spell. While you still needed to all the other stuff, but there was one more thing you needed to do. Command it. Lets me explain by having an example.

If you wanted to make water spew out of your right hand, then you had to direct you elemental mana reserves through your mana channels leading to your right hand.

That's what you would do if you did not have primal magic. If it was with primal magic it would look like this.

If you wanted to make water spew out of your right hand, then you had to direct your mana reserves, through your mana channels leading to your right hand, and lastly, command it to change into what you wanted it to do.

Simple

The last 9 pages of the basics had a list of commands you should use as a beginner. Some of these were luckily elemental spells. Wouldnt want to be a Elementalist without elemental spells.

The commands all had basic descriptions with warnings like:

Command: Lesser fireball

Description: shoots a fireball, that makes a small explosion upon impact. Can fly forward for up to seventy-five meters.

Warning: DONT USE IN FOREST AREAS.

I memorized a couple of them that, I thought, I would find useful.

I had memorized weak fireball, weak wind slash, ice spear, and weak earth strike. I did not know which element to focus on, so I just took one of each.

After that, I checked how many spells I could cast before I would be empty.

Weak ice spear and weak earth strike took about 10% of my mana reserves, and weak fireball and weak wind slash took about 20%.

I decided that I had studied enough for today, and walked out of the Inn to the street outside.

Time to join this Adventuring guild!, I thought, and with that, I walked down the street searching for the Guild.
