《The Federation Of a Thousand Earths》Chapter 24

While the UE was hunting down the responsible for this cowardly attempt at genocide as well as trying to deal with he humanitarian catastrophe, some agencies of the UE were dealing with the issue of trying to figure out what exactly happened, as well as how it could have happened.
Because while the government might cry that something like that can not be allowed to ever happen again, unless it was also figured out what exactly went wrong in the procedures meant to prevent something like that from happening, it could not be truly fixed. Also, more information about the virus would be helpful for its treatment.
It would not be a quick process, that was certain. But it was a vital and important process. Because the next attack could be a bit better planned, a bit better executed as well sa targeting not a protectorate, which was fairly easy to quarantine, but instead the UE as a whole. That would be a catastrophe of unimaginable scale.
While it was considered fairly unlikely for a bioweapon to be capable of destroying the UE, it could massively reduce it in scale. A lot of the more populated earths might be effectively lost during such an attack. And although he UE had a lot of procedures in place that made such an attack even more difficult to succeed than a Protectorate, this would only be cold comfort for the survivors and dead of such devastation.

Who would do something like that to those poor elves? :-(
They have done nothing to anyone… How can anyone do something this horrible?
Hshfe821
I unterstand your pain. I also cannot really comprehend that this is really happening. I first thought it was a joke, but there is an official press release from the UE Parliament (LINK).

In the press release, there is also a project linked were you can donate a few processing cycles. Unlikely to help a lot, but considering our production capacities, even seconds can save lives.
Eithoran
Thank you very much for that link! I will do that and after cry in the bathtub about humanity and what it is capable of :-(

@Eithoran, I do not think it is proven already that someone in the UE is responsible. It could be aliens after all…
But I think you are right, humans are the most likely.
SuperHUm4n1933
They deserve that. They should all be slaves of our glorious humanity
*Flagged by AI moderator, confirmed by human. Your stated sentiment is a call for genocide. Considering your previous post history, you are hereby banned from this website and the police on your earth has been informed.*

Well, this was quick. A single minute to not only get ai flagged, but also confirmed? Moderators, GO!
What an asshole.

@Eithoran, the UE has published an updated statement (LINK). It is now proven that a citizen of the UE is responsible, although the details of how will not be published until the perpetrator has been captured.

Ok. Anything that even looks like it is supporting genocide will result in an immediate ban. We will also look at the post history, and if there is anything suggesting that this is more than an one-off mistake in judgement, will send everything we have about this person over to the appropriate authorities.
Consider yourself warned.
Also, for all our members: If you see such behaviour, it is better if it gets reported twice then that it is missed. We have a dedicated report button for a reason, as well as a really good automated sorting system for complaints. We, the moderator team will act as quickly as possible for the next few days in this regard.

This despicable act is undefendable. It needs to be dealt with. But remain civil in your calls for punishment. Stay within the laws that make the UE such a great place to life.
Also, I will state it here, but it will also show up as a pop up at the beginning of the page: For the next few days, posts can take up to a minute to show up. Every single post will be checked by AI, which will forward anything even a bit controversial/agressive to human moderators. You will get a message if the post is blocked, and we have allowed AI to censor posts with minor issues, to reduce the workload on us. Every bit of censoring will be removed within a week, but it might lead to further actions if the censored sentence/paragraph/whatever was particularly bad. I hope everyone accepts this?

Well, the UE has published casualty estimates (LINK). We have roughly 500 thousand Kar’Netra that will survive for certain. Of the other 2 million Kar’Netra that lived before this terrorist attack happened, current estimates suggest a survival rate of less than 20%. This is beyond devastating as you can guess. Before you ask, the low population of the relatively advanced Kar’Netra stems from the fact that they are a relatively young Protectorate (the UE found them in 7087, so 84 years ago), and they had been found a 104 years before that by the McCreadie Mining Company, who were/are a particularly cruel bunch. From an estimated population of Arun 1.5 Billion to a bit less than one million in a mere one hundred years.
It looks like the entirety of the recovery has been reversed. I hope whoever did this will be found and imprisoned. The only reason I am not saying anything about a worse punishment is because I like my account :-)
Statement of the UE, dated 7172-3-8
We are happy to announce that the bioweapon that endangered the Kar’Netra is now officially exterminated. Over the last month we have scanned every little bit of the surface of Kas’Aron, checked as much as humanely possible, and are now sure that the virus is defeated. We think, but more analyzation will be necessary, that the virus died out at 7172-2-12. The last bit of it that had infected someone was defeated at 7172-2-10. We are happy to announce that that particular victim survived her ordeal.
The final death count is, as far as we can determine (there are some minor record issues on the side of the Kar’Netra): 1,652,734
The population of the Kar’Netra sat at 2,543,192 before this attack happen (same issues with record keeping apply)
Which means that a horrible 65% of their population is now dead. We will do our best to help the survivors rebuilt. And we will do everything we can to prevent something like that from ever occurring again.
Let us hope that something this horrible will never happen again.
The trial for the instigator will happen at 7172-4-5.
Thank you very much. And good luck

8 157Of Men and Dragons, Book 1
Book 1 is now available on Kindle, or in paperback/hardcover! You can buy it here! Jack crash-landed on a planet where the natives are seven-foot-tall carnivorous cat-lizards currently somewhere between stone and bronze age. The good news is the natives think the ship that crashed into their mountain is a dragon and are steering clear of it. The bad news is they just left one of their own as a sacrifice to appease the beast. No matter what Jack and his AI co-pilot decide, his life just got a lot more complicated... ATTENTION: This is soft sci-fi rather than hard sci-fi, hence why I chose that tag. For those of you unfamiliar with the distinction, here's what Wikipedia had to say. 1. It explores the "soft" sciences, and especially the social sciences (for example, anthropology, sociology, or psychology), rather than engineering or the "hard" sciences (for example, physics, astronomy, or chemistry). 2. It is not scientifically accurate or plausible; the opposite of hard science fiction. Soft science fiction of either type is often more concerned with character and speculative societies, rather than speculative science or engineering. The term first appeared in the late 1970s and is attributed to Australian literary scholar Peter Nicholls.

8 118After the End: Serenity
We all want to believe we are heroes of our own story - unless we want to be the villain, of course. At the end of everything, the Final Reaper decided he hadn’t been a hero. Driven by a desire to right the wrongs he was subjected to, he killed everyone who wronged him or his people - which turned out to be everyone that wasn’t killed by someone else first. He'd won - but it was a hollow victory. Eventually, Order’s Voice found a way out. If the only existing being would agree to give up most of his power, the Voice could reset the multiverse to an earlier time with a few minor changes. Of course, the Voice couldn't ask it that way. It could only ask if the Final Reaper was willing to start over from when Earth was first brought into Order. It was an easy decision, and yet it wasn’t. Was he willing to go through eons of pain again to not be alone? Yes. In a heartbeat. Not that his heart beat anymore. Now it would. Perhaps he could even be a hero, this time. When he landed in his old body - more or less - on Earth, the Final Reaper once again became Thomas. He was both and neither. He needed a new name for a new life. Serenity. ------------------------------------------ While this is technically a System Apocalypse story, it's a System Apocalypse that is designed to have a large percentage of the population survive and prosper. There are a lot of problems that come with the appearance of the Voice, and it's entirely possible to lose. Earth has some special opportunities, but also special challenges. The first time around, Earth won the first round and lost the second. Serenity has ten years from when the Voice arrives to prevent that from happening. It will be a group effort; Serenity can't win alone - which is difficult for someone who's been alone for as long as he has. Of course, that's only his second priority. ------------------------------------------- Updates Daily A note on the nonhuman lead tag: He isn't human, and hasn't been human for a very, very long time (or maybe not long at all, depending on how you count it). He still thinks of himself as human, either way. The content warnings are mostly to give me room to write; this fiction is not intended to be edgy, but once in a while a character will swear or someone will get seriously injured. The cover image is a Chandra/Hubble composite image of VV 340 / Arp 302 / UGC 9618. While we're not going to space itself any time soon in the story, people from elsewhere are coming to Earth and Serenity will visit other planets. Plus, I like space imagery.
