《The Tale Of A Slayer》Chapter 11: The village of Slayers, Baras

“Heup!” (Arcus)
“You’re really strong, aren’t you, Arcus san?” (Yuuya)
“Haha. I’m a strength oriented build after all. This much is pretty average in my class.” (Arcus)
I started talking with the big man and big heart Arcus san, who easily agreed to bring the house to the village. Today, it’s gonna be the first time I see the village! It’s different from before now though. Before, I was scared because the villagers seemingly hated me. But Arcus san tells me that’s because it’s been a long time since the villagers have seen an outsider, and were unsure how to act with me.
They were ostracized due to the Slayer’s curse after all. Well, to make it short, misunderstandings led to misunderstandings, and both of us were scared of each other. Fufu. That’s right. The crazy strong Arcus san, who unbelievably, is lifting the cabin as if it were just a piece of wood, was scared of me.
Right now, we’re heading to the village, and Arcus san agreed to introduce me to everyone, since I’m also gonna be a slayer in the future. He’s a really good natured person, but in front of his strength, I’m glad I’m not his enemy.
Gillareal san, headed to the village before us, saying he needed to deliver the meat to the village’s meat storage facility. Gillareal san was shrewder. He replied with no more than three words, and seldom speaks on his own. But nevertheless, he’s also a good person. All of the people here are good people. Damn those Church fanatics. How dare they expel the ultra nice Arcus san and the others here?
Saying so, we entered the village. A canopy of trees blocked my view of the village, but once I crossed it, I could finally bask in the glory of the village.

“Welcome, to the Slayer’s village, Baras.” (Arcus)
Arcus san seems pleased seeing my reaction. Because obviously, the village looks really beautiful. The village was built on the side of a mountain, and it was shaved off a bit in order for the houses to be built in various levels. On the ground, near where we were standing, there was a market like place, with people yelling the prices and offering discounts. Truly, this seems like every other village, only grander. We cross the stone walls that encircle the village and enter. Arcus san said that he needed to speak with the guards, so he left me with the house for a while.
In front of me, a huge plain extended, at the end of which the market was. There was a well in the middle of the marketplace, with a stage behind it. The market was busy, with people selling and buying stuff. I walk through the marketplace, leaving the house at the outskirts. I made sure it was locked though.
It seems people here don’t use money, since it’s mostly useless in such a place, where survival was the only thing that mattered. Instead, they depend on a barter system, and exchange stuff for what they need. I can see a variety of weapons, ranging from broadswords to bows, and daggers to spears. Everything was displayed here, and the merchants were appealing to the customers with meat and expensive looking magic weapons. A little further from the market place, a road snaked up the village, in to the village. Ledges were made, presumably with earth magic, on which the houses were built. At the very top of the mountain, a bigger house stood. Might be the house of the village head. It was bigger than other houses, with a bright red roof and a pavilion erected near it.

“Amazing…” (Yuuya)
“Isn’t it?” (Gillareal)
Suddenly, Gillareal san appears beside me, and starts talking as if he was here all along.
“Ah Gil, you’re here already” (Arcus)
And then Arcus san appears, carrying a house, walking through the market. The odd thing is, most people ignore it, as if it were normal.
“Arcus..Here” (Gillareal)
Saying so, he tosses a bag to Arcus san, who catches it.
“Thi-This is!” (Arcus)
“Yeah..The cleaning set for your axe. I exchanged it for the meat. “ (Arcus)
“Gil…Really…Thank you so much!” (Arcus)
Arcus san looks close to tears, and Gillareal san seems embarrassed, since the burly person was just about to cry. Fumu… Gillareal san uses more than 3 words only with Arcus san. Seems they're really good friends.
Arcus san walks off, whistling happily, and sets down my house on the lower levels. Sweet. I own a house in Baras now! I’m glad!!
“Well, Lil Yuu, I did your job. So, now, listen to my request. Follow me.” (Arcus)
“Eh? Y-yes ! “ (Yuuya)
Arcus san has already starting walking way, so I also follow him. Gillareal san chuckles and walks away. What’s happening?
Arcus san climbs on to the stage, and beckons me to come next to him. I follow him and do so. What’s he gonna do? Arcus san takes a deep breath, and yells. Yep. Yells. My eardrums might burst.
“EVERYONE! THIS IS LIL YUU, AND HE’S GONNA JOIN US AS A SLAYER!! EVEN THOUGH HE IS AN OUTSIDER, PLEASE TREAT HIM LIKE ONE OF OUR OWN!!!” (Arcus)
Eh. What. Did he just do something like a class introduction? In front of all of these people? Arcus san, I suffer from a serious case of social anxiety, you know?
“””“UOOOOOHHHHH!!!!””””
Everyone starts yelling and stomping their feet. Oh god. This is so embarrassing!
“Haha. Relish the moment, Lil Yuu” (Arcus)
Arcus san says so, patting my back. Uuu..Arcus san, you traitor. I weakly raise my head, and bend down.
“My name is Yuuya Nakajima! Please take care of me, seniors!” (Yuuya)
Not a sound. No one responds. Eh? But I made sure to learn the language properly. Did…did something happen?
And contrary to my expectations,--
“”””””“UOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!””””””””
A yell much louder than before erupts, and the people all clap me on my back as I walk down the stairs… Uuu… So embarrassing… Arcus san… I’ll get you back for this!
I walk back home, defeated. I feel tired. I had to deal with that public embarrassment and even a round of congratulations. But even then, I can feel it. I’m smiling. Because right now, I’m the happiest I’ve ever been after coming to this world. Miras san, Arcus san, Gillareal san, Birinio san, everyone here, they’re all like family to me. And unexpectedly, it’s quite a good family. I can’t wait to become a slayer. Because after that, I can truly say that I’m one of them.
Maybe this trip to another world… might not be so bad after all….
I enter my cabin, and fall onto the bed. I feel tired, but my mind feels happy and strange. It feels good.
“So…” (Miras)
Master! She got here before me? Maybe she was here all along... What a troublesome master.
“Master! I did it! I got the house to the village!” (Yuuya)
“Good work. Yuuya. It’s time.” (Miras)
The praises are short, but I can tell that she really is pleased, and it’s not something shallow. It feels nice.
“Time for what?” (Yuuya)
Master seems a little worried, but still speaks up.
“Time to become a slayer” (Miras)

Paths of the Chosen (Rewritten, Revised, and Reinvigorated)
Daniel Stewart was chosen to alpha test a brand new Immersive VR game, "The Realms". What he doesn't know is that he has also been Chosen by one of the Powers of a far-off world, and is now a pawn in a game much bigger than any he thought he would ever participate in. Will he survive and thrive in this strange new world, or will he stumble and fall, shattered by the ambitions of another? Does he have what it takes to walk the Paths of the Chosen?---Inspired by the Chaos Seeds novels, TheDespaxas's The Gamer, and a wide variety of games and books, although the world, characters, and systems are my own. Expect high fantasy, magic, combat and intrigue, love and loss, grief and passion. This story is intended for adult audiences and contains explicit sexual content, profanity, and violence (including sexual violence, although not by the protagonist and not as a focus of the story). Chapters with such content will be clearly marked, and all explicit sexual content will be behind spoiler tags. I prefer my stories to have happy endings, and especially in these uncertain times, I feel that it is important to maintain hope. While this tale will reach some dark places, I promise to you that, when all is said and done, the villains will be justly punished and the heroes will prevail and prosper. Remember: it is darkest before dawn, but dawn always comes. Please note also that although this story does not have the [Harem] tag, it does have an extremely slow build into a polyamorous relationship. Additionally, starting with Champion (book two of the series), the [Multiple Lead Characters], [Female Lead], and [Non-Human Lead] tags would also apply to varying degrees. This is a complete, ground-up rewrite of the original Paths of the Chosen, following feedback from here and elsewhere. It is now written in the third-person limited omniscient perspective and in the past tense. In addition, while the major plot beats are unchanged, most of what comes between them has been reconsidered and rewritten, with pacing and characterization as a special focus.---Update schedule: 2 chapters per week (Monday and Thursday), not counting bonus chapters. Chapter length is roughly 2,500 words on average, +/- 1,000 words. Chapters with explicit content tend to be longer so that they are still worth reading for those who would prefer a fade to black. --- Cover art by Agri Karuniawan (@artofagri).
