On The Rain Slick Precipice Of Eternity

"You need to get some perspective, kid."

Looking back from where he was, John would reflect, there is no hell harsh enough for the unassuming man that had uttered those words to him on the morning history ended. At the time, however, he laughed it off the way that only a freshmen can, ignorance masked by confidence.

"And where would I get that?' John gestured vaguely at the flat farmlands surrounding the town. "We seem to be fresh out of hills."

The stranger stilled the figeting he had been doing while waiting for the bus. He started to turn to John, then thought the better of it before reaching into his overcoat's pocket. Withdrawing a small card he let it drop.

"That is not my place to tell you, but if you need to know..."

Before John could say anything the stranger walked away into the early morning mist.

John played with the card in his hand. The dark glyphs burned into the damp card taunted him. Obviously a GPS position, but where? The professor droned on about the dangers of a command economy. Perspecive on what? A dead end degree in a dead end university in a dead end economy. John had no future, just a series of days, all alike.

Idly, his fingers pulled up the address on his phone.

John's phone had lead him to a warehouse on the fringes of town. That morning's mist turning into full blown rain. The resulting setting leaving John with a sense of unease. He found a red door, long since covered in patches of rust with disuse and tried the handle. Surprisingly it was unlocked, the door's smooth opening belying its appearence. He walked into the darkness of the abandoned warehouse, slowly feeling his way into the building.

One. Two. Three. Time in the darkness seemed to streach on until he ran into something. He felt around in the darkness, fingers stumbling around what seemedto be a telescope.

On a whim, he bent down, feeling out the eyepiece. From the darkness, light blossemed, the universe laid bare.

The heavens opened. John was gone.
