《World Step (Rewrite)》Chapter 2 - Seeing Stats II

Quintin laid there, slumped over the dead [Intruder Wolf] in the aftermath of battle. His wits slowly returned with a combination of gritted teeth, painful lacerations, and strained breathing. He couldn't tell where his wounds began, and the blood that covered him ended, thus he struck out with unfamiliar fingers to investigate.

He traced his hands over his body, wincing when he found three deep trenches across his abdomen and chest. He found lighter scratches and tears almost any place he touched, but despite that, he was relieved. He had fought and lived.

And the pain isn't so bad, actually. It could be better, but with the way these wounds look... It's mysterious.

Quintin took stock of his situation while he attempted to staunch the wounds with patches of torn cloth. The fog started to recede, and it crept ever lower, revealing the tips of trees far below his platform — like cat-claws poking through a cotton blanket, which promised both comfort and deadly playfulness.

The surroundings opened up and he was met with mountains as far as the eye could see. Some rose upward into the clouds where they remained enshrouded. Quintin could now see he was on a slab of rock that jutted out arrogantly from the side of one such cloud-piercing titan.

So... mist-filled valley further down, I'm hanging off the side of a mountain on a slab of rock and, oh yeah, I'm also hurt...

He angrily kicked out at the dead wolf's paw along with that thought.

The more I think about this, the more I'm reminded of when Oltoi would talk about those games he played... I think he called them the 'R, P, G.' [Levels], [Experience], and [Skills]; I definitely remember those words! Regardless, I have to work with what I've got if I want to live to figure this mystery out and find out if I can get back somehow!

The post-battle high, along with his injuries being less worrisome than he imagined, allowed him to calm down and assess the situation rationally, more rationally than otherwise.

Of course, he first wanted to know more about what he had to work with.

I should get my head around the idea that, apparently, there are 'game-like elements,' for lack of a better word, that I'll need to master if I want to live. In that case... [Stats].

The first things that jumped out to him were his [Class] and the 'question marks' that drew attention just by existing.

Clearly, the system took inspiration from my background for my Class; it's actually kind of exciting to see it grow with experience. Although I wonder why my own familiarity doesn't account for anything... Oltoi would answer, "Even the most powerful of Gods have to start somewhere!"

Well, that clarifies things. He rolled his eye in annoyance. Obviously, I need more information.

He scanned around the area while lost in momentary thought. What he hoped was the midpoint to some grand trees made their presence known. The fog pulled back even lower, and some faint beginnings of habitat and motion began to unravel. The sun shone down brightly overhead and added light to the serenity of grand and towering snow-capped mountains. While there were flashes of movement, the scene remained largely still and solemn no matter how long it held his gaze. He could faintly hear the splintering of bark and the louder collapse of trees now and again.
