《The Horde》The loneliest Ogre
Advertisement
A loud grunt was met with the clink of heavy metal, a short pause followed before another grunt was followed by another clink of metal. the source of these perculiar sounds was a large man lying back down on a bench, forcing two large dumbells up and down in a classic bench press motion. The strangely coloured man continued with these actions for a quite a while longer, until eventually he heard a quiet, yet loud *ding* that only he could hear.
1 point of strength gained
"H-Holy shit" The large man gasped out as he laboured for every breath.
That, that took a while longer than-" The man gasped for air.
"Than Ith-thought it would." The large man then placed both the 55kg dumbells on the rough concrete ground, then used his now free hands to wipe the accumulated sweat off his brow.
This man was Oliver Greenwood, a 17 year old gym rat, or he was, bfore the incident at least. Now oliver was a hulking mass of green muscle that towered at just over 7'5 feet tall. A ridiculously tall for a human, but then. Oliver wasn't quite a human any more. A little under a week ago Oliver was turned into what the 'system' called an 'ogre'. Thanks to this metamorphosis Oliver was now a tall, hulking, red eyed, pointy eared, fanged Ogre.
Aformentioned Human-turned-Ogre snatched up his towel and quickly wiped the rest of the sweat off his face, towling around his canines that now just poked out from his bottom lip.
"Next up is legs." Oliver grunted to himself as he finished towling off and sat down to rest for a minute or two. Whilst he was resting Oliver absent mindedly opened up his status window and viewed his now increased stats.

Oliver dismissed the blue screens and thought over his progress, it had been about 5 days since the great collaspe, in the 2nd day he had found the gym he currently resided in, it was quite a large gym, membership only so the equipment wasnt too worn. The building was one story and had 5 rooms, the free weight room, the machine room, the yoga room and 2 staff rooms. Each room was relitively large and had room for Oliver to train in. Though he didnt use the yoga room, that much.
Oliver thought about back before incident began, He was illegally driving to the gym (he was still on his learners permit), this gym infact.
When suddenly an impossibly loud voice boomed from the heavans about how humanity had forsaken nature and its process of natural selection. Unfortunatly, Oliver was no longer listening to the mysterious voice's speech, as he had just ran over a little green thing. Oliver desperatly tried to regain control of the vehicle whilst craning his neck to look around the ugly green child thing that was plastered over his windscreen, just as he began to regain control of the vehicle however an obnoxious transparent blue screen pooped up in the corner of his vision.
CONGRADULATIONS!
You are the 7th human to kill a monster! the system awards you...
...
The [Ogre race; Rare green variant]!
Indescribable pain racked Olivers body as he immediatly lost control of his car again as he writhed around in pain. the last thing he saw was the telephone pole directly in front of him.
when Oliver awoke again he was still in his car. It seemed his seatbelt and air bag had saved his life. He muttered a thankyou to them before crawling out of his wrecked vehicle. thankfully he wasnt going too fast when he hit the pole. After making his way out of the mangled vehicle he looked around him, the street he was in seemed like it had been abandoned. He staggered his way over to an abandoned car, leaning on it for support, this was when he noticed he had a green arm, and that he towered over the abandoned vehicle. Oliver then felt the instinctual need to say the strangest phrase.

However just before oliver could look over his stats he heard something scream behind him just before Oliver felt something collide with his hip. Oliver was sent straight staggering into the car next to him, he quickly turned to see who hit him, but was met with a little green thing that looked similar to what he had run over before. The thing was about 4'5 feet tall and had only a disgusting lioncloth to cover its unmentionables, it was a sickly green and had an enlarged head with a long hooked nose. Overall it was one of the most disgusting creatures Oliver had ever laid eyes on. And it was about to beat him to death with a club.
Oliver barely managed to raise an arm in time to block another one of the creatures swings. as it struck Olivers forearm a meaty thud resounded from the collision.
'little thing hits hard' Oliver thought as he shot out a leg and kicked it in the chest, throwing the creature from its feet, Oliver then shot forward and grabbed the thing by the face as it tried to scramble to its feet, Throwing all his weight forward Oliver slammed the creatures head into the pavement, once, twice and a third time which was met with a sickening crunch. Oliver let go of the thing and started dry retching the second he saw the things head. However Oliver was once again interrupted by a blue screen.
Killed [level 1 goblin]
'So that gross litttle thing was a goblin' Oliver thought to himself as he picked himself up from the ground, massaging his slightly bruised hip and arm. They were alot less bruised than he thought they would be, probably due to his now ogre race.
"RAAGH"
Oliver cursed under his breath as he tunred as saw two of the goblins sprinting towards him, each with a cobbled together club. Oliver steeled his resolve and met one of the charging goblins' with the heel of his boot, which sent the goblin bouncing back with a meaty 'oof', unfortunately the other goblin cracked down his club on Olivers outstretched leg, the club smacked into Olivers knee cap, dealing damage even through his new tough exterior. Oliver pulled his leg back with a small cry of pain, the goblin sensing an opportunity sprung forward, swinging his club around and cracking Oliver just under the ribs, Oliver coughed roughly and brought a flailing arm down on the goblins head, which dazed the creature before it was met with a brutal knee to its eye, the goblin head snapped back as collasped to the ground.
Killed [level 1 goblin]
Whilst this was happening the second whinded goblin rose to its feet and flanked out behind Oliver before swinging its club to the back of one of Olivers legs, which quickly brought Oliver to his knees. The goblin raised its club again, preparing to strike Oliver in the side of the head, putting an end to the fight, but was interrupted by the green man's elbow flairing out and striking the goblin across the jaw. It was sent reeling to the ground as Oliver rose to his feet and crushed the Goblins wind pipe under his foot.
Killed [level 1 goblin]
Oliver stood there gasping for breath for a little while longer before darting behind the nearest car. Looking around for any other goblins, before beginning to make his way down to his gym. He navigated around some more goblins, and strange looking pig men, and steered well clear of what looked like a wolf with an oversived head. it took him until nightfall to finally reach his gym, which was near the centre of the sprawling city Oliver resided in, The gym looked like a stone fortress, a square-like building with no windows, and one reinforced door to keep out theives, a door Oliver thankfully had a key card for.
Oliver made his way inside the gym, no one was inside, not even staff. Oliver wondered how long he had been unconsious for, if the world had changed this much. Shaking his head, Oliver banished those thoughts, he would worry later, right now he was tired. Oliver grabbed several heavy weighted plates and stacked them up infront of the door until he felt safe. Then he grabbed a 2 yoga matts and quickly fell asleep on them. his weary body exhausted after the terrifying day. Oliver did not know what horrors he would face tomorrow, only that he wasnt looking forward to it.

Author's Thoughts: What is litRPG (From wikipedia) - LitRPG, short for Literary Role Playing Game, is a literary genre combining the conventions of MMORPGs with science-fiction fantasy novels.[1] LitRPG is a literary genre where games or game-like challenges form an essential part of the story. A LitRPG work simultaneously narrates the story of characters inside and outside of the game-world. At least some of the characters in a LitRPG novel therefore understand that they are playing a game: they are 'meta-aware'. So, while Tolkien's Lord of the Rings is a fantasy novel, a book about people creating avatars and interacting in a Lord of the Rings MMORPG would be a LitRPG novel. Why do I read them? You know, I am not too sure. I love MMOs. I played them, quit them, joined up and repeated the cycle. They are fun! They are a massive waste of time but so are most games. Do I want to read about someone else playing them? Sort of?The advent of VR and the possibility of VR someday becoming so immersive that you can't tell them from reality sets the imagination on fire. What if this could be life? But most stories fall short. At the end of the day the protagonist hangs up his VR helmet and goes to have dinner with his mom and dad or other family and it becomes meaningless. It's like the story that ends because the main character woke up and nothing you read matters. There have been some books that explore the concept of the intersection of reality and total immersion VR. Enders Game is a classic. There were a few others that escape me but they exist, however, the cross between the game and reality is weak.So what if the game was real? The technology needed for total immersion VR is so advanced that by the time we reach that goal technology should have naturally evolved to include several items. You must have direct neural input. You simply can't have a total immersion (all senses and perfect presence) experience without this basic prerequisite. If you have direct neural access, you can probably do neat things like feed knowledge and skills directly to that person. You can undoubtedly do many horrible things as well. Muscles are controlled by the brain. If you control the brain why would you let the body just sit there and rot? A person that sits unmoving for 24 hours a day will have their body whither away just like a coma patient. However, if you control the brain you could control the muscles. On a basic level, this would be isometric impulses, working muscle group against muscle group to avoid atrophy. Taken to its logical conclusion you would be able to gain muscle mass and program muscle memory. The flip side is that you could remote control their body... but let's not go there. So what would people do if it were real? Well, they would probably limit and regulate it since the drawbacks are very obvious. Even if you look at the basic aspects of this you can see some negative possibilities. Look at the Sword Art Online anime. Personally, I think they missed the boat by putting a bomb in the VR helmet. Do you really need a bomb when you have direct access to the brain? So what kind of events would you need to have a situation where the obvious drawbacks haven't been explored? Maybe a society where the advancement of technology has so far outstripped the explorations of its applications that ignorance was truly bliss? Okay, so I had to put in an alien invasion to kickstart the premise, but that was just one of the possibilities.
