《Master of Learning (Color coded)》Chapter 19 Teaching Gobber

When I wake up it is getting close to dusk already. I rush towards the goblin cave fortress as fast as I can. I close the fortress gates and head inside the cave. Gobber is sleeping in the old kings room. Today I've decided to spend the whole day teaching Gobber about classes and jobs. The more he knows, the less mistakes he'll make. I like the speed he learns at, just the fact that he almost died, fired a crossbow bolt over the city walls into the city. Even the lack of basic knowledge could result in him or myself dying... He needs to be taught at least the basics for me to begin to trust him. Otherwise he will always be a bumbling idiot who puts himself and others in danger.

Gobber looks to be about the 2 years old, it's extremely hard to with goblins since they don't grow much height wise. They age very quickly, every 1 of our years is equivalent to around 5 years for them, so that would make him around 10. If he were to become a hobgoblin, he would grow in age immediately, looking like the average height of a human adult. Goblins are one of the few races like this, it is very rare for them to change though. They don't get any smarter if they change either. So if Gobber was somehow able to change into a hobgoblin right now, he would still be naive to the world around him.

I finally get tired of waiting for him to wake up so I start cleaning up the room we're in. About an hour later he finally awakens. It's to dark to train anyways. Soon enough Gobber approaches me, rubbing his eyes and yawning he says.

“Whats up master?”

“We're staying in tonight and I'm going to teach you about classes and jobs.”

He sits down looking at me intently waiting for me to start the lesson. I start with the 6 main classes warrior, guardian, thief, archer, black mage and white mage. Everyone of these classes does a different thing and each class does that thing the best compared to other classes which are mainly support classes. Giving him a rough description of each first before going into more detail. He looks at me intently, a big dumb smile shows across his face as he listens. Some of his teeth show through as his mouth hangs open, I can tell he is still listening though and not daydreaming. Proceeding the lesson, I begin to explain each class in further detail.

"Warrior is the main damage, they're hard to kill and can deal incredible melee damage. Most of the time they have a 1 handed sword and shield or a 2 handed sword. They are the main units in armies, comprising up most of the troops with other classes providing backup. Most people will pick this as their rebirth class."

He acts like he wants to speak. I think he may want to ask a question so I let him.

“What is rebirth?”

“It's when you die, you get to pick a shrine that determines your classes... I thought you already knew that since you're a thief class.”

He looks at me confused and speaks up about it.

“I don't have the thief class though.”

Now I'm confused. I unlocked assassinate from the hobgoblin. Was he the only thief out of all the goblins or what? Now that I think about it, Gobber didn't have a weapon. I start thinking about which class would be a good secondary. He already knows archer, so something to help that would be good.

Blue mage would be good for him since it gets more versatile the more enemies you fight. Beast tamer could potentially double my pets though... Scout would be a good choice too, as well as druid or any of the mages… I can't make up my mind so I keep teaching him about classes for now.

“Archer is the class you are and thief is the class the last hobgoblin was. Thieves are very good at being sneaky and stealthy. Guardian makes for the best tanker with their multiple defensive skills that will help keep them alive.”

Gobber asks another question, he is like a baby when it comes to information. I need to make sure he learns and understands everything or teaching him would be a waste. I'm honestly just glad that he wants to learn, this would be much harder if he kept losing interest.

“What is a tanker?”

“Well it's someone who blocks attacks so other allies can fight the enemy without worrying about being attacked themselves.”

I'm trying not to use big words to confuse him as I continue.

“Black mages can chant magic to cast elements to hurt enemies and white mages can chant magic to heal your party members.”

I cut his hand which scares and confuses him and I chant a healing spell to demonstrate it to him. The wound wasn't that big so it quickly heals, only leaving a tiny amount of blood in his hand. Then I do the same thing with a freeze spell, casting at one of the walls. He looks on in amazement but I don't think Gobber could handle memorizing chants.

“Well those are the basic 6 classes, now we'll go over the other classes that I know at least.”

After explaining every single class and demonstrating how they're used, he looks like he's understood it all. Sort of absorbing information like a sponge, I go over proper procedure with a few more weapons and how to equip armor for when I buy him some armor. It has been a few hours since I started teaching him. Maybe if he manages to stay alive a little longer, I can start teaching him the “common” language.

“Well lets try teaching you a class now.”

I decided to teach him blue magic since it's easier to pick up then the other magic classes and it's also the easiest to explain. After explaining everything too him and cast string shot at him a few times, he finally learns it. In Gobber's excitement he covered Sock, Pokodo and I in sticky string. Laughing as spider silk shoots from his finger tips as he flails his arms around. I'm not sure how many spells I can teach him from my own list. I start with the most important ones.

After casting poison spit to clean up the string attacks he manage to learn it. I tried teaching him silence but it seems like magic based skills are too hard for him to learn. I still have a good amount of skills I can teach him.

All of my pets are already able to run the same distance as me since we've been training every day. Their fatigue has slowly increased. I'm sure that Gobber would slow us down. I have him running to the entrance of the cave and back for now. I'm making him a set of silk cloths to replace the few tattered pieces he has on. I'm about 20% done with the shirt I'm sewing for him when he re-enters the room. He's breathing hard and panting for breath near the entrance to the main room. Gobber catches his breath then says.

“I got the scout class, what next?”

Wait! What did he just say!? After confirming it, he unlocked a third class. I tell him to keep running for now while I think about it… Now that I think about it, I was putting human limitations on him. He could end up with all the classes I have and become an unstoppable monster if I let him. I start to think about killing him but don't want to act too hastily. I don't know if that's the case yet. I'll try teaching him a few more and if he learns more than 10, I'll kill him. I'll have to kill him if he learns that fast, otherwise he would become an unstoppable monster.

“Gobber I'm going to teach you how to be a white mage.”

I start going through the class more than I did previously. I show him how to do heal as well as dispel multiple times but he just doesn't get it. After trying for an entire hour, I decide he cant learn any magic that has chants in it. That might also be why he couldn't learn silence, since it has a very short chant to use it.

I don't know how to teach him night vision but drink blood is pretty easy. Once we fight some enemies I can drain some of their blood afterwords and teach him that skill. The next class I should try to teach him is beast tamer but I can't until we're fighting an enemy.

With how much he's improved as an archer, we could probably fight through the forest at night. I'd rather not risk it. I try to teach him druid but it doesn't seem he can learn that class either. There might be race requirements on certain classes… Thinking that, doesn't that mean he can learn classes humans can't?

It's now light outside. We head towards the forest and fight a spider, I explained beast tamer to him thoroughly and he unlocked the beast tamer class. If he can't tame the spider after a dozen attempts, we'll just kill them. It's completely fine though since he manages to tame it after a few attempts…

With how strong he's getting, I'm starting to get more and more afraid. I might be making the thing that kills me stronger every time I teach him something. I give a quick shiver at how strong he is becoming so quickly, he might already be a better archer than me, tomorrow he might be a better beast tamer. I'll keep teaching him, hoping that isn't the case and I'm just overthinking this.

“The next class I want to teach you requires certain armor, so I'll have a set made for you tomorrow. Stay in the fortress even if I don't show up though.”

Gobber looks at me with a big smile on his face then says.

“Okay master, see you tomorrow or maybe not. I guess depending on if you are busy or not.”

I go to school and do lessons like normal, then go to sleep. I'm more tired than usual but that's probably because of changing my sleep schedule.
