《Master of Learning (Color coded)》Chapter 7 First raid boss

Before everyone woke up I enchanted mine and Kattie's boots with haste. Even using all my mana which shouldn't be possible for most enchanters, the movement speed increases was only around 10 percent. I guess it's better than nothing.

I went to the local supply shop and bought some enchanting paper. Which has the ability to hold magic, enchants and spells on it. Each piece costs around 10 copper. I bought 10 and enchanted a few with haste magic. A few with heal magic. If I had that weaken undead skill Kattie used, I would also do a few of those. My class isn't even close to the same level as hers.

I head back to the inn we decided to stay at and they are both up. Before we head out, I infuse Lance's spear with fireball magic again. We head out of the village. Leaf still has her familiar summoned. I asked how long it lasts and Leaf said forever or until it dies...

Wow that seems strong and you can summon multiple familiars. The downside is it reserves around 10 percent of your total mana to do it and since Leaf is also a black mage she cant really waste mana on more than a few summons. Leaf says with mana control you can make the familiars stronger. It still only reserves 10 percent of your mana. So that's good to know.

I can tell from the heirloom robe that Leaf is wearing that she is at least 10 years old. When you turn 10 and 15 the class you picked when you reincarnated, you get a piece of equipment from it. It looks like she picked intermediate summoner as her main class. The robe is still a little big on Leaf but she'll grow into it.

On our way there, we are attacked by a few waves of enemies. I've warned of every single group before anyone else has noticed. Karn seems to like me since the groups are easy to kill when we have the drop on them. Olaf is an extremely fast fighter. Even for wearing heavy armor and wielding a heavy mace. Both aren't in his classes expertise bonus so he often misses attacks and gets critically hit…

I'm probably the only one besides Karn that realizes this. Which makes you wonder why he just doesn't wear leather armor and use a different weapon like a sword. Slowly but surely we make it to a freshly erected castle in the forest. It is made out of trees and bones from fallen skeletons. It is still freshly and hastily constructed. Many holes in the building are visible, the sheer speed the building had been constructed most likely left it not structurally sound. There's also some stone in the design as well.

As we head in, I'm at the front of the group acting as a scout. I can see the enemies faster and further away than everyone else. Before we fight I fall back to the middle of our formation. I sense a huge number of skeletons in the next room and tell Karn. He makes a plan to have Kattie cast weaken undead before we go in to give us a better chance. Most of the front liners are situated near the wall of the entrance to the room we're about to go in.

Kattie is also close to the entrance and I can hear her chanting the magic.

“Oh great lord of light, give me the power to weaken the enemies with your greatness.”

Before she finished the whole chant she walked to the very entrance of the door. “Weaken undead!” And casts it into the room.

Karn, Olaf and Lance having fireball infused weapons and hastened feet ran into the room. They cleared out all the enemies before anyone else could do anything. Around 12 skeletons were in the room. It might have been a difficult fight if we didn't put all the extra effort into preparations for the fight.

Olaf's been looking at me weirdly since we've made it into the castle. After a few more rooms are cleared he finally asks.

“Hey Kite how are you able to use black magic, time magic and the red mages infuse skill?”

It caught me off guard. I had prepared a canned speech I thought up in case someone noticed.

“I've been using haste scrolls for the majority. My mother was a time mage with enchanting so I have a few from her.”

The planned out lie was questioned.

“But also you're gear is not normal for a mage to have and you're chanting the time magic when you use it.”

Thinking quickly I say.

“You're not wearing the right armor either! My mother taught me the chant so I know it and say it to give the people I use it on a heads up that it is being cast on them.”

He looks suspiciously at me, with a look of anger in his eyes before he gives up. I guess he didn't care too much. A few more rooms and we're getting way too much equipment to carry. We decide to make a trip back to the closest room near the entrance and deposit everything. Most likely it'll be sold by Karn and split between us. With him taking a slightly larger portion for himself since he's the leader.

We finish clearing out the wing we were in and hit a dead end. We head back to near the entrance and there's a similar sized wing on the opposite side of the entrance. We start to clear that wing but near the end of it is a giant door. The Lich is definitely in there. Before we even open the door I can feel chills running down my back. I've gotten them in my previous life when a raid boss was around. I've only taken part in a few raids in my previous life. Even if the enemy was supposedly weak, almost always someone ends up dead... My goal this fight is to minimize that number.

Seeing as we have only 1 “healer”. Chances are it will end up being more than just 1 person. If I could heal without my cover being blown I would. It is too dangerous... I'm still too weak, people will take advantage of my ability to fill any position if I let them. I prep some druid magic under my breath and cast weakened rejuvenation magic on everyone in the party including Olaf. The way rejuvenate works is it is a very, very slow heal that lasts for 24 hours. Healing roughly 10 percent of someones total health every hour. Since I cast a weaker version, it will be less but it wont be noticeable. The mana backlash that I can't use is lessened down to about 1 percent per person. I would guess the total health gained from this weak rejuvenation to be about 2-3 percent health regained every hour.

We do some final prep before we walk into the room.

Kattie had already started casting weaken undead. Managing to get it off just like always. Everyone went rushing in. Olaf, Karn and Lance leading the charge. Even with suspicious eyes on me, I chanted haste before hand on all 3 of them. Haste lasts around 1 minute. So that's all the help they can get from me from that. I also gave each a haste scroll just in case as well as a healing scroll.

As soon as I walk through the door, fear shoots through me. I see the lich, he's a giant compared to the other skeletons. Even so that doesn't mean there aren't a ton of skeletons in the room. Around 20 skeletons in the room. Most are dying in one hit. Weaken undead should last around 5 minutes. So all the ones in the room should be effected before it wears off. As soon as Kattie is done casting, she pulls out a harp and starts playing it. I feel slightly more powerful than before because she is playing the strength ballad.

With half the skeletons being wiped out, the lich attacks with ice magic, freezing one of Karn's members completely solid. He'll die from suffocation if no one hurries and frees him. I rush towards the block of ice chanting fireball magic.

“Oh great lord of fire, free your rage onto your unsuspecting enemies, Fireball!” I shouted.

The ice around him starts to melt and he falls to the ground. I might have also hurt him if I wasn't such a weak mage. Leaf was also chanting the same magic as me but with no ice covered ally to assist Leaf aims at the lich. A fireball shoots out of her hand. It's easily twice the size of mine and we probably used around the same mana to make it.

I had given Leaf a mana potion before we entered the room and I see her drinking it already.

“Foolish” I think to myself. What a waste of a potion, this is still far too early in the fight. They recover more mana the lower your mana is.

The fight was raging on for around 30 minutes. Fights normally don't take this long. Even raid bosses. But we're lacking good attackers. Lance and Olaf are carrying the damage by themselves. The only reason we haven't been wiped out is because of Kattie's amazing healing and Karn's tanking. He is holding the lich at bay single handed. The lich has continued to spawn skeletons. Lance has been the person on cleanup duty for those.

Leaf ran out of mana 5 minutes into the fight and was useless. With a few pot shots being thrown at the lich. The lich constantly summoning more skeletons and aiming to freeze us. The lich made a design flaw when he built his throne room. There are giant stone pillars leading up to his throne. Anyone being attacked by his magic can easily duck behind and not get hit.

That being said, a few times the unnamed adventurers have been hit by it. One has already been knocked unconscious or is dead from constantly taking unnecessary damage. The other one I've been constantly saving with well timed fireballs and physically pushing him out of harms way. It feels like I'm herding a sheep to safety when I do. The lich notices the weak link and continuously picks him to target. I doubt he will last through this fight and will be another victim.

Lance is handling the skeletons being spawned almost effortlessly. He will become a very strong person in the future, acting as a secondary tank to let Karn focus on keeping the lich occupied. If the lich was aloud to run free during this fight we would have far more casualties. Being primarily a caster he doesn't attack very often, but with each swing the sound of its power echoes through the shoddily constructed building. Each blow making a unique sound as it passes through some of the openings in the building.

If Olaf was landing more of his attacks the fight would be over already. Each strike echoes the same strength as the lich's but it almost seems like Olaf doesn't know how to wield it properly. He swings it around like a 2 handed sword instead of a mace. If he had any experience he would know how to wield it more effectively. He is still far more useful than the adventurers Karn has brought. The single skilled one is doing barely anything in this fight. Using a bow and arrow against skeletons isn't working very well. He should have bought armor piercing tips designed to ram instead of pierce. The fatter head might be able to deal more damage than the nicks it is causing the skeletons at the moment.

Besides myself and Karn. It feels like everyone was under prepared. We're going to fight a deadly creature and they didn't make any adjustments to their fighting style. Some bosses just need to be dealt with differently. I wish I had more time to prepare, I would have enchanted everyones gear with some type of effect. Knowing we were fighting against a lich I should have realized people wouldn't understand how to avoid attacks. Even just explaining the boss beforehand could have saved a few of their lives. This is a large scale fight, the few tiny fights they've had in their lives did nothing to prepare them for this.

Karn is most likely a knight from the capital with his few troops being his squires. They've no doubt had little training to no training, some being close to my age... This group is comprised mostly of children now that I think of it... I doubt any of them are above level 20. That is why this fight is taking so long. We are fighting a 10 man boss with 3 people not ready for this fight. I shouldn't be talking though... Besides my support, I can do nothing else to help... I wish I had a weapon to strike with... Perhaps I should look into getting a long ranged weapon after this fight if I survive.

What am I doing!? We're in the middle of an intense raid boss fight and I'm getting sidetracked by other thoughts. I need to stay focused. It's approaching the climax because the lich has started summoning more and more skeletons out. Also increasing the frequency at which his ice magic is coming out. Olaf takes a bad hit from the lich “critical hit!” he's down, breathing heavily.

Kattie runs towards him and starts chanting healing magic. It's to no avail though. Using a magic he hasn't used yet, the lich silences Kattie. Black smoke appears around her face stopping her from chanting. Olaf's already been injured a few times where Kattie has had to heal him and me as well with scrolls. There's nothing left I can do. I start running towards him chanting healing magic. I mutter it under my breath.

“Oh great lord of light, give me the power to heal my allies with your greatness, Heal.”

Trying to play it off like I used one of the scrolls that was already used. He gets a little better. Enough to stand and fight but not nearly the same healing as Kattie. The next attack was towards Olaf again which would've surely killed him! Karn managed to block the first half of it. The second half cut his neck. The lich is using a staff but attacking with the razorsharp fingertips of his skeletal hands. Karn toppled over like a newborn baby, falling to the ground dead.

“The finishing blows mine!”

Olaf says as he strikes the lich's face now for the first time close enough to the ground to hit from the giant attack that killed Karn. “Critical hit!” The lich's face was blown completely off. Dark gas starts to shoot out of the robe he was wearing. The mist that was around Kattie's mouth disappeared as well. We've won the fight!
