《Adventures of a young Zuma》Volume 1- CHAPTER 3

Today, the Elder took me to see the fields. It was a good sight for me .Different levels of our clan members worked in the fields. As we have 5 levels, they are differentiated by the colour of our eyes. It begins with blue, green, yellow, orange, brown and finally red. As you can imagine I have blue eyes as I am Infant level. The Elder has brown eyes. We have small to medium bodies compared to other clans, some of them have even fur on them. But we only have two small horns on our head & rest of the body is light brown in colour. The fields were spread over a mile. It was a sight to see.

Elder: “See child, these are our people’s only way of income & work. The plant which we cultivate here is known as Vitalis. When light star is at its hottest, we sow the seeds of this plant, we nurture it, water it. When it grows about your size, probably around when the light star gives cool weather, we harvest it.”

Elder: “From these plants, we make foods, medicine, antidote, which greatly helps the people in our whole continent.”

Me (A little confused): “So Elder why the other clans don’t respect us or even help us to defend from monsters?”

Elder (having a slight sad expression): “They think even if we are wiped out, they can still produce Vitalis on their own.”

Me: “They can harvest Vitalis even without us??”

Elder (now looking towards me with a small smile): “Yes my child, even without us they can cultivate these fields.”

Me (little annoyed): “So we are pretty much expendable...this sucks...”

Elder (still looking at me): “They can but they cannot extract the same quality & quantity of the products by themselves, as these methods are only known to us, do you understand, my child.”

Me (still annoyed): “So why doesn't the rest of the clans attack us & take all of these by force?”

Elder (his smile just got a little bigger): “Because my child, of a certain law which is implemented by the Council of Zoit all over the continent to stop clans attacking other clans.”

Me (surprised): “Law??What kind of law, Elder??”(I was hearing this for the first time about any laws made by the Council)

Elder: “The law states that every clan has the right to with hold any clan secrets & cultural behavior. No other clan has the right to interfere or even ask about the other clan’s secrets. If a clan deems necessary to share its secrets with some clan only then they can. If any clan tried to forcefully learn the secrets or harm any clan for learning their secrets, the Council of Zoit would deem them enemy of the continent & wage war against it to subdue them.”

Elder: “This is the law, my child. But there are some loop holes into it to. Just like our predicament, letting monsters attack us & not helping us knowing we are not able, is one way to eradicate us.”

Me (I am now angry): “Why no one does speak for us to the Council? We are also a part of this continent.”

Elder (looking now towards the fields, having a slight hopeful expression): “I don’t know my child...This is going on even before my birth or my parent’s birth. I don’t know when this will end. Even will our clan survive that even I don’t know. But I hope in the near future someone or some people would come up & start defending us...I could only hope now...someday...someone...will come.”

I heard these words and looked towards the direction the Elder was looking. The light star was fading behind big clouds...what a wonderful sight it was, I thought to myself.

After coming back from the fields I went on my exploration. This time I decided to explore towards west equipped with my stick sword, few stones and a bag. I stuck to the shadows or hid in the bushes, marking my way, carefully. I do not want to encounter that hornless monster. That day I encountered small type of monsters which I easily took out, & not just dealing the final blows but finishing them up all by myself. I took some of their piece as souvenir as always & also I dug out their teeth’s and claws. I need to make a better weapon for myself if I want to continue with my exploration. Today I also decided to take some extra pieces with me as I wanted to experiment with them, even though I have no idea what I would do...but still...kind of liked the idea of experimenting.

As I was returning back, I decided to visit the site where my lucky monster was killed. I was curious if his body was still there nor not. Maybe others have picked him clean, you never know...but still I wanted to visit that place. Upon reaching its death site I saw only its bones where all that was left. I thought for a while and decided to take some of his bones with me & also his skull. Maybe I was becoming some kind of bone collector or something, but curiosity got the better of me. My bag was full to the bream, & it was time for my exploration to end for today. I came back home, placed everything on the table, counted them & noted them. I cleaned the bones and the skull neatly. I decided to hide them in another room. Then I followed to have my daily snack & the rest I put it inside a container, containing a frost stone, which will keep them fresh. Tomorrow I would start my experimentation & weapon making...he he he...feeling kind of excited...can’t wait for tomorrow.
