《Transient - COMPLETED!》Chapter 1 - Uh, Guys? I Think I'm Screwed

“You know what? I’m gonna say it” said Aries. “You’ve had a lot of crazy ideas, but this one takes the cake.”
She was right, of course – which made it all the better. Alex didn’t mind one bit. As long as he was concerned, he was in heaven. It was Friday night, he had enough money for takeout, the whole gang was online, and they were about to attempt to raid an epic-level dungeon all by themselves. Twenty-four hours later, when he’d be sitting in a jail cell watching roaches climb the walls, this would be the feeling he’d savor the most.
Alex quaffed a Potion of Rejuvenation to top off his health bar, checked his cooldowns, and assumed his position by the gate. This was their fifth attempt at the Attack on Greystone Keep final quest, and everybody had their game face on. All they had to do was make it through this wave without losing any party members. If they managed that, the boss that followed would be smooth sailing. That, of course, was easier said than done. They’d finetuned their strategy a thousand times, but it still felt like they were missing something.
“Incoming!” came Packman’s warning, and they were on again.
Aries let fly a Fireball at the first line of charging raiders, blasting a good handful of them to kingdom come and setting another dozen or so aflame. The sheer panache with which she played her Pyromancer was something to behold. Not that it made much of a difference. Compared to the oncoming horde, this vanguard was just a drop in the bucket.
Packman used Bolstering Cry to give the rest of the group some much-needed oomph, then activated his Shield Wall and got out there to meet the raiders face to face. He was the group’s tank, and the only thing that stood between them and a total party kill.

Bass stood in the back and summoned his Soothing Spirit, already preparing to patch up anybody who got too low on health. He wasn’t much of a talker, their resident Cleric. When it came to pulling his ass out of the fire, though, Alex would take no other healer over him. Bass was alright.
Rona held the left flank. She was the group’s Assassin, and the key to this particular strategy they were about to use. Alex could hear her whisper to herself over the commlink, trying to memorize the skill sequence of the new Area-of-Effect skill rotation she was trying out. She had just respecced to a Bleed build, and she had to play her part perfectly, if they were to finally manage and get to the boss in one piece.
As for Alex himself, he brought up the other end of the line. He was a kind of a wildcard, both as a player and as a raid party member. He didn’t have Packman’s eye for tactics, or Aries’s head for numbers, or even Bass’s zen-like calm. What he did have was a gift for improvisation, a +3 Black Knight Greatsword, and full intent to stick it to the raiders where the sun didn’t shine.
As the first Fireball-scorched raider got close enough for Packman to slam him with his shield, Alex had already downed two and was about to cut a third in half. Slash-Slash-Cleave. Pop went the raider, dropping a tidy little pile of loot. Picking it up, of course, was out of the question for the moment–Alex didn’t have a single second to spare. Two raiders rushed to take the place of their fallen comrade, and hundreds more were coming.
Slash-Slash-Cleave. Critical Hit!
“Nice one, Alex!” said Rona, herself already knee-deep in raider remains, a blood-red nimbus wafting from her enchanted daggers in waves.

“Keep it up, people!” Packman piped in over the commlink. “At this rate, we may even have a chance to –”
Whatever Packman said next, Alex didn’t hear. Someone–a very heavy-handed someone–started shouting and pounding at his appartment door, startling him so bad he almost dropped his gamepad.
“Alexander Rulin!” roared a man on the other side of the door. “Police! Open Up!”
Fuck.
Fuck.
Fuck, fuck, fuck.
“Uh… guys?” said Alex, numb. “I think I’m screwed.”

A Friendly Voidling
When a Creature of the Void fails to find friendship among her own kind, she instead sets her sights upon another, human-filled world. Unfortunately, humans turn out to be rather small and squishy things, resulting in a mostly accidental trail of death, destruction and madness as she embarks on her journey to finally make some friends. This is a 25k word inane short story, and makes no attempt at being serious or realistic. It's my first attempt at trying a more comedic writing style. No relation to my other stories, aside from a brief cameo. Cover bodged together with Charat Genesis. Not quite the design I had in mind, but reasonably close. Doesn't contain explicit smut, but does contain references to stuff happening off-screen. May contain traces of gore. Also eels, in varying states of distress. Posted here and scribblehub.

Yin-Yang
Mages in North America seem to have it all – typically from well-off families, and able to manipulate their environment in ways most of the world would never believe. They don’t even have to bother with the mundane details of life like housework, thanks to their sensitives, who also make a useful source for extra magical energy. After all, sensitives have no use for it themselves, and if mages weren’t meant to make use of it, then the sensitives would obviously have some way to prevent that. That a mage can transform a sensitive physically, with no restrictions beyond overall mass and basic biological viability, whereas magic tends not to work directly on any other living thing, is only further proof. And look at the way they live on their own, barely a step above animals. It’s better for them to belong to a mage. Sensitives in North America live on the edge of society and survival – typically so paranoid they avoid hospitals and anything else that could lead to being tracked, many of them with little or no education and no legal identity or existence. Mages exist, and mages want sensitives for some reason, but no one ever comes back to explain what that reason is. Waiting every day for the hunters to notice them doesn’t lead to much motivation or hope for the future. And once they’re captured, they’re the property of someone with a terrifying amount of power over them. Anything is better than capture. Mages are born to be the masters, and sensitives are born victims. Or are they? Jax’s life is turned upside-down when he’s caught by the hunters and sold to a mage. Andreas is still mourning for his previous sensitive, though, unconsciously creating a difficult standard for Jax to live up to, all the more so while still struggling to come to terms with this new reality as Andreas’ sensitive. A runaway sensitive isn’t what Van expects at the mental health centre. Is this a hunter trap, set for him and the rest of the Donovan family by the hunters? The hunters would, after all, love to see them cross the line openly and finally do something they can be charged with. Either way, Miranda’s genuinely in trouble, and he can’t just abandon her to it. Snatching a sensitive out from under the hunters and hiding her is odd behaviour for a mage – but then, Catherine is an odd mage, living in disgrace in the old servants’ quarters of her grandmother’s house, responsible for cooking and housework. Lila owes Catherine her freedom; is there a way to help Catherine achieve her own, and at what price? Tension is building between traditionally-minded mages and those advocating change, and something has to break. *** Yin-Yang includes a small amount of profanity and no graphic sex or on-screen physical violence. However, sex and gender roles and relationships within the mage/sensitive subculture are non-traditional in mainstream North American terms. The key criterion in a primary relationship is not relative sex or gender, but the pairing of mage and sensitive; given the transformation of sensitives by their mages, physical sex is non-absolute for a sensitive, and gender identity can vary as in anyone else. *** *** The way mages treat sensitives is extremely varied and, in some cases is outright abusive. The struggle against that is pretty much the point of the book. It is NOT grimdark or misery-porn! However, if you will be triggered by this, please, don't read Yin-Yang! *** Complete stand-alone novel, 153K words! Also available on Scribble Hub and as a free ebook.

Shadowrun: Blake Island School of Magic
It's a high tech, low life. It's the Seattle Metroplex in 2074. It rises like a steel and concrete cancer out of the earth. Poverty is rampant, corruption is everywhere, crime is out of control, corporations basically control everything, the old United States is fractured, magic has come back and now it turns out that humanity has been joined by elves, dwarves, orks and trolls. The old world ended but the rent is still due. Life goes on. You'd be surprised what people can adapt to, especially if they don't have a choice. One of the places where life goes on is just west of Seattle. Surrounded by the waters of the Puget Sound is an island. On that island is the Blake Island School of Magic. A decade ago it was known for producing some of the most talented awakened in the world. That reputation was hijacked by the wealthy corporate elite who now park their teenage children there. And since it's a boarding school, their parents mostly forget about them. Three young people, who are certainly not wealthy or elite, are chosen this year to attend this school of magic in hopes of revitalizing their reputation for talent. One from the ash drifts of the Puyallup Barrens, one from the most densely populated slum hive in the world and one from prison. This is their story. -- This story is set in the Shadowrun universe. If you're not familiar with Shadowrun, it mostly tells the stories of deniable mercenaries called shadowrunners in a cyberpunk dystopia. Instead of telling another story solely about shadowrunners, this story will tell the tale of young people navigating a world that is indifferent to them at best and actively hostile at worst. Shadowrunners will be in the story and we'll see them operate, but they won't be its main focus. This story originally began in 2017 as a passion project and continues to this day on the Somethingawful.com forums. The unedited version is over a million words strong. There are currently seven books in this series and I am currently in the process of editing them. If you read this story then you won't lack for content. -- The Topps Company, Inc. has sole ownership of the names, logo, artwork, marks, photographs, sounds, audio, video and/or any proprietary material used in connection with the game Shadowrun.
