《The Voyager》Season 1: The Starcraft Commander---Chapter 17: A normal day in Raynor's Raiders

Jean woke up in her own room. It was a plain chamber. Jean had some money. After all, she was practically the second command among the Raiders. Still, she didn’t find it necessary to decorate her own room like other girls her age do. It was an inefficient use of time and resources.
She silently stood up and took the gauss pistol below her pillow out and put it on the counter. She walked to the bathroom and exited five minutes later in a straight uniform. Strapping the pistol to her side and hiding a dagger next to her thigh, she left the room and went to the cantine for some food.
After a boring meal that involved a computer simulated conversation with half a dozen crew members that made them admire her like a goddess, Jean went to the second deck of the Hyperion. She entered a room which was guarded by 2 Wolfpack marines. They pulled back their rifles as soon as they saw it was her. Anyone unauthorized that entered would be killed without warning.
Jean walked by the marines and entered the room. It was an old storage place, but Jean touched a certain brick, and a part of the ground moved aside, revealing a ladder. She walked down the ladder and was met with a keypad. Two security bots were aiming at her behind the door with autocannons. After typing in the correct code, which was 16 figures long, the door opened and the bots moved away. she had reached her destination.
On one side of the room, a certain specteur was there, restricted by several means of containment. His eyes were half closed and half open. Several pipes pumped tranquilizers into his bloodstream to keep him unconscious. Tosh wasn’t killed when Jean shot him in the chest. He was heavily wounded, and Jean bought him here for a certain purpose.
Jean silently linked herself to a computer. Previously she had done surgeries to herself and inserted a computer chip inside her that not only held large amounts of data and provided her with the calculation power of a cpu but also allowed her to connect with other electronic devices remotely. For example, she could connect to any of Raider’s computers in range and utilize them for her own purposes. She could literally hack into any computer device.

Jean processed the results of the experiment. A few days ago after she captured Tosh and brought him here she programmed a computer program to control and analyze Tosh. It would inject the specteur with enough sedative to keep him unconscious but not damage his body. Meanwhile, the computer was doing experiments on the specteur to find ways to create man-made psi energy.
Jean wanted to create her own ghosts. During the battles she fought with the tal’darim she saw how psi energy could help strength the units. She was able to defeat the tal’darim because they were stupid enough to attack into a position locked down by countless heavy firepower, but there was no denial that the protoss were powerful. Their psi blades could penetrate almost everything and their plasma shields could protect them against almost every possible attack before falling apart. Jean had already armed the Wolfpack units with electrically powered force fields, but they were less effective than plasma shields. Force fields had to be manually opened and closed because they would blocked firing from the user as well. They also consumed large amounts of electricity. Plasma blades were much more expensive and energy consuming than psi blades. Jean wanted a way to make common footsoldiers psychic.
Jean learned from the data the experiments weren’t as successful as she wanted. She wasn’t the first that tried to create psi units. As far as she knew everything else failed. The human brain was one of the few things mankind knew little about. She had no idea how the brain controlled psi elements that made some human special.
Jean frowned. She was too hopeful in believing she could manufacture psi units after a few days of experiment. She ordered the computer to continue its mission before disconnecting and leaving the lab.
Jean took a walk into the bridge and noticed the Raiders had no mission. She left the bridge and walked to the armory to meet Rory Swann. When she entered the armory, she saw the engineer was climbing off a certain vehicle.
“Ahhh Jean…” Swann said, excited. He just completed something and he wanted someone to share his excitement. “I was going to find you, and here you are!”

Jean grinned warmly. “What are you so excited about?”
“You know how you managed to hack into that Tosh bastard’s account and transfer all his credits to the Raiders right?” Swann said. Jean nodded. After she shot Tosh, she offered to hack into Tosh’s account and give all his credits to the Raiders. Raynor wasn’t normally ok with hacking for a profit but he was willing to let is slide against someone like Tosh. Tosh’s computer had great firewalls, but Jean literally had dozens of computers connected to her brain. As a result...let’s just say the specteur was rich.
Swann continued. “I used that money and bought a load of new stuff from deadman’s port. I just completed linking them to the Raider’s network. Speaking of, what are you planning to call this network now that the entire Raider depends on it?” Swann suddenly remembered Jean never named the computer network system that she created. Usually in the terran society inventors get to name their creations.
“Warden.” Jean said quietly.
“Ok. Great name. I’ll tell cowboy about it.” Swann realized he was off topic. “Anyways, this is…” He pointed to a vehicle with railguns on the back. Jean’s internal cpu already brought up the information. “Diamondback. It has railguns that can…”
“Shoot while moving, making it a great units at pursuing enemy units.” Jean finished her sentence. “I did my homework.”
“Right…” Swann nodded and walked to a fighter. “This is a wraith. This is a fighter dating back to the time of the Confederacy. But don’t undermine its power. Its cloaking field is updated and its missiles and lasers can still pack a punch. It also has great speed.”
Jean nodded. Finally the Raiders have something that could fight in the air that wasn’t their flagship. “And this?” She pointed at a motorbike even though she already knew what it is.
“Ahhh. No wonder you don’t recognize it. It’s a vulture, also from the age of the Confederacy. These bad boys can place spidermines underground and wipe out any ground enemies that goes near them. I linked the spidermines to the Warden so our units can be safe around it. By the way all three units can be piloted by AIs. You just need to code them.”
“Nice job.” Jean smiled and tapped Swann on the shoulder. “You’re my savior. I’ll get to the coding as soon as I can.” She smiled and walked out of the armory.
The biology lab was prehaps one of the places no crew members goes to. First, the place was restricted and contained important research data. Second, the owner of this lab, Egon Stetmann, wasn’t the most popular one on the ship. He was a shy man, always rumbling about his research. And that was exactly what he was doing when a beautiful girl like Jean visited him and asked for a favor.
“Well I am not saying this is impossible. I mean I am the best biological scientist on this ship...but I need a lot of time to do this and a lot of resources too. It’s just not that easy to turn common soldiers into psychic. You know what I mean?” Stetmann explained nervously. He had no intention of having the girl think he was incapable of the task.
“Of course, I am just suggesting a possibility.” Jean said, not disappointed because she physically couldn’t feel disappointment. “Good luck.” She turned and left the lab and went for the armory. She needed time and space to do the programming.
Back in the lab, Egon Stetmann wondered if she would stay longer had he said he could do this.

The Beta Test
Our nameless narrator participates in a beta test for an early VRMMO game Meridian 60. That's not the real name but it captures the spirit of the adventure given the chronological and contextual era of the game. His character is unique and special but purely for mundane reasons and not because of any inherent or social significance. The first chapter which is mandatory to submit a story on RR serves as a bit of a prologue with some exposition, although I limited that to a reasonble level. I plan to begin releasing additional chapters starting Thursday, to align with the 48 hour submission approval process and also because I have something to do Wednesday. I haven't written anything but the summary and first chapter, nor have I plotted anything out. This is because my plan is to release roughly 34000 words a day, 10 chapters of ~12.5 pages each, for 3 days at which point the story will be complete. I'd have liked to plan for more but handling the interface tables and so forth needed for a data heavy litrpg slows down the writing process. 100k words is a bit short, a standard pre epic fantasy 300 page spec fic novel, but this is mostly a writing exercise and I am considering a longer project if I can maintain the pace. Probably do a different concept, maybe a dungeon core, over 5 days, since a 500 page novel is more common these days. Slight subversion of VRMMO stories Stat heavy/crunchy No paying your bills by gaming No out of game conspiracies No angst, interpersonal drama, or damsels/dudes in distress Schedule is 30000 words a day excepting the first chapter, a limitation of RRs fiction submission system Fantasy, high magic, male lead, no party, guild, or harem No gore, some profanity, no sexual content, and no current plans for anything traumatic
