《A Modern Day Demon King》* Chapter 17 – Karaoke

It had been almost a month since Reyn’s transfer and the office had gotten used to having Reyn around. Those that still disliked Reyn at work gossiped about her during lunchtime, but that was all it ever amounted to now. And as for the female clerical workers, they were still being civil to Reyn given what happened to Hú Jiao. And honestly who knew, how long that would last?
Incidentally, Reyn had also made it a habit to get up a little earlier on work days to stop to feed her personal hobo every work morning. Despite never talking to each other, the man would always be waiting on the bench for Reyn. And Reyn would always buy him a coffee and a different breakfast each work day. It was just a simple routine that served to remind Reyn of her humanity.
Well, anywho it was Friday again, and it was lunch time as Reyn and the gang were going out to eat Ramen. Right before they leave, Chief Chén importantly clears his throat as the entire office falls silent. “Miss Mephistopheles has been with us for almost a month now. So, we’ll be holding a welcome party in the club after work today. I expect everyone to attend.”
The office workers cheer as Chief Chén proudly returns to his office. As they head out of the office, Reyn asks, “Is Chief Chén talking about a nightclub?”
Huáng snorts and says, “No, Chief Chén will rent out a private club karaoke room to sing, dance, eat and drink.”
“Oh,” Reyn unhappily murmured.
“So, you don’t do karaoke in Usonia?” Zhào curiously asked.
“Oh, we do, but it’s not that popular among the mainstream public. But there’s just one problem, I can’t sing. I’m utterly tone deaf,” Reyn flatly stated.

Yáng hastily says, “Surely, you can sing something. It’s always expected that the newcomer always performs and sing at their own welcome party.”
“No, seriously, I’m not being shy, I really am tone-deaf,” Reyn grumbled.
Huáng smiles impishly and says, “Okay, try to sing a note.”
Reyn sighs and opens her mouth as a terrible off-key sound emerges from her throat. The three men wince at the terrible sound and watch in relief as Reyn closes her mouth. Reyn glances at them with accusing eyes and grumbles, “See I told you, I can’t sing!”
The three men warily glance at each other as Zhào politely says, “How about you lip-sing, can you do that?”
“Probably,” Reyn grunted.
Seeing Reyn’s unhappy expression Yáng says, “Don’t worry, we’ll just explain it to Chief Chén in private. I’m sure he’ll be fine if you lip sing to a song.”
Reyn grunts in reply as the three men hastily change the topic and related the tall tales of the mystical power of the resturant Ramen that they would be eating. And upon eating said delicious Ramen, Reyn truly did forgot all her troubles for the time being.
