《A Modern Day Demon King》* Prologue – Final Battle

An intense battle rages between the Human kingdom’s troops and that of the Demon King’s forces. The screams of anger and pain fill the air of those dying and fighting for their very lives. A warrior rushes to the aid of his fallen brother to only be stabbed in the back by a Demon spear wielder. The warrior in shining knight’s armor lets out a wail of anger and unleashes his special ability attack. The demon soldier lets out a wail of terror as a blast of energy destroys twenty nearby demons. The demon warriors let out wails of anger and rush forward with renewed vigor.
On both of sides of the field, the troops gather for a final assault that will determine the winner. An impossibly handsome warrior in white armor gathers the men for a final wave. “For our homeland and those that we protect!” The hero roared igniting the flames of valor among the weary human soldiers.
The warriors, in turn, respond by crying out, “Hurrah! Hurrah! Hurrah!” The human knights and soldiers gather together to form a charging line. At the center of the line, the white armored hero leads the charge into the thickest part of the demon front lines.
On the opposite end of the field, a silver-haired demon covered in sleek black armor walks forward as the blood splattered decoration skulls on his shoulder armor drips ominously with each step. Rivers of blood from slain humans and their fallen demon brethren cover the already blood-soaked fields. The ebony armored demon proudly halts and kneels before the young teenage Demon King. His large black horns on the side of his head almost reach out to touch the small youthful figure of the Demon King before him.
The current Demon King only thirteen-years-old had inherited the throne at the tender young age of nine years old with the death of her father, the previous Demon King. Demon King has sleek ebony hair and piercing crimson eyes. Her hair flutters in the breeze as she removes the military cap from her head. Her small, child demon horns can be seen as her red cloak flutters dramatically behind her. Her dark military uniform is untouched despite the battle as her sheathed blade at her side drips blood onto the soaked earth.

“Milord, the humans are preparing another assault. What will you have us do?” The silver-haired demon quietly asked. The Demon King did not react only watching the hero in blazing armor led the charge forward as battle horns sound dramatically behind him. Failing to hear a response, the silver-haired demon asks once more, “Milord, what will you have us do?”
Without taking her eyes off of the battlefield, the crimson cloaked Demon King flatly answers, “Sound the horn for retreat.”
The silver-haired demon with glowing blue eyes gapes in surprise. “But Milord, we have not yet lost!” The silver-haired demon protested.
The Demon King tiredly sighs and says, “It’s too late, their final charge will destroy our front lines. All we can do at this point is minimize our losses.” Turning her eyes away from the attack, the teenage Demon King takes a step forward and gently places her cap on the startled silver-haired demon’s head.
“Milord?” The silver-haired demon asked.
“Seamus Blackheart, I, Reyn Valerius Maximanious the Ⅳ, the last surviving member of the royal demon bloodline, and present Demon King of the entire demon realm; being of sound mind and body, I declare Seamus Blackheart, my heir and the next Demon King in the absence of any biological heir or living royal bloodline carrier,” The Demon King firmly declared.
Tears form in Seamus’s eyes as the Demon King turns away and briskly says, “Now Go!”
Bowing once more to the Demon King, Seamus forces himself to march away and obey the Demon King’s orders. Seamus takes a white horn form his side and begins to sound the call for retreat.
A beautiful demoness with crimson hair and curved side horns, shouts, “Seamus, where is Milord?”
“Milord has ordered the sound of retreat,” Seamus tiredly croaked.
Before the demoness can protest an older wiser demon mutters, “He bears the Demon King’s crown. The Demon King has named a new apparent heir, we must obey orders whether we wish to or not.” The demoness clamps her mouth shut in anger, but sullenly darts away to aide in the retreat. The older demon nods to Seamus as they gather their wounded as swiftly as they can and retreat.
Those at the front brace themselves in understanding that they were to sacrifice their lives for those retreating at their back. The demon soldiers dig their feet into the ground hoping to stave off the humans long enough to ensure that their comrades would live. The two opposing enemy lines clash in an epic flash of lights and sound the echo throughout the valley.

A scream of despair is heard as the Demon front line is broken through and like dominos, the rest of the line begins to crumble. With ease, the Human break through and chase after the retreating Demon forces. However, standing amid the field, a petite, lone figure in a red cloak stands firmly between the charging human forces and that of the retreating demon king’s forces.
The Demon King sighs and unsheathes her blade as dark crimson energy gathers around her. Tightening her grip on the sword’s hilt, the Demon King raises her blade upward and unleashes a violent red barrage of power. The human forces falter as the Demon King swings her blade and an explosive discharge of energy bursts from her single swing cleaving those nearest her in half.
The human’s scream as the Hero motions for the forces to retreat. The Hero charges forward and unleashes a barrage of holy might from his blade. The Demon King parries the move with a flick of her blade as she narrows her eyes at the Hero. Sneering quietly to herself, the Demon King moves forward but does not release all her power.
The hero and the Demon King clash in battle as the force of their blows tear the very earth around them to smithereens. Their violent attacks thunder across the valley as the humans gaze on with fear and awe at the battle unfolding before them, while the retreating demon forces weep soundlessly at their leader’s valor.
The Demon King shoves the Hero back as she unleashes a torrent of energy. The Hero ducks for nothing as instead of destroying him, the energy gathers to form a large gate on the opposite end of the valley in front of the retreating Demons allowing them to escape.
The Hero bitterly shouts, “Stop them, we can’t let them escape!” The human forces dive forward, but the Demon King unleashes an attack that destroys the very ground before them. The Hero glares at the Demon King and dives forward in retribution.
The Demon King grits her teeth to dodge the hero’s attack and is barely able to. The majority of the Demon King’s power is concentrated on keeping the Gate open long enough for her people to escape. The Demon King weakly parries the Hero’s attacks as she feels herself grow weaker under the strain of holding the transfer gates open.
The Hero recklessly charges forward and moves to the left in act of deception, but instead slides underneath for a surprise attack. The Demon King is unable to dodge as the blade moves steadily towards her chest. Rather than dodging, the Demon King watches the last of her forces disappear beyond the gate. As the blade cruelly pierces through her, the Demon King closes the gate as blood wells up in her throat.
The Hero carelessly removes his sword from the Demon King’s chest as the Demon King crumbles to her knees. Not taking pity on her age or appearance, the Hero coldly says, “Any last words?”
Blood wells up the Demon King’s throat as she grins a terrible bloody grin. “Foolish hero, I wonder what you will do when you learn the truth? I wonder if you will feel guilty for killing a helpless child? And when those that you serve betray you, I hope you will always think of me,” the Demon King croaked.
With cold eyes, the Hero swings his blade forward to slay the Demon King. But to the shock of many, as soon the holy blade grazes the Demon King’s body, the Demon King’s body turns into a mist of smoke and vanishes to the surprise of many.
The Hero and the soldiers pay the circumstances no mind as the holy sword was known to purify evil. The Hero turns to his men with a triumphant smile as the human soldier’s let out cries of victory. With time, the humans would move to gather their dead in a funeral pyre, before marching victoriously back home. But the sheer cruel irony would be that the Demon King’s words would prove true with the passing of time.
