Fang Hao accepted the additional challenge and soon an arrogant looking young man in a set of white robes entered the fighting ring. He was reedy looking and had a permanent smirk on his face as he eyed the meatball before him in disdain. ‘Even though I am in the 1st layer of Qi Condensation and not allowed to use a single magic tool… taking care of this Qi gathering trash will net me easy contribution points.’ Fang Hao was cursing in his mind. ‘Damn elders. What the fuck are you oldies smoking? A Qi Condensation Disciple to fight against me?’ He immediately protested to the presiding judge.
“Senior, how am I supposed to fight a Qi Condensation cultivator? He can stab my eyes from afar with a flying sword or something!” The copper skinned judge did a sneer which made her look like an ugly hag as she replied. “What you expect an elder to look after you without even a bit of effort? Your opponent is forbidden from using any magic tools or talismans and is only in the 1st layer of Qi Condensation. It hasn’t been too long since he stabilized his cultivation, so he shouldn’t know more than a few spells at greater proficiency than initial mastery. You can admit defeat now if you want. Rules remain the same.”

“Senior, this junior is willing to fight.” said Fang Hao as he gripped his wooden sledgehammer tightly. The presiding judge nodded in approval as she addressed the Inner Disciple. “Remember, you may not use any magical tool. You may use any spells you know. But do not kill or cripple the fatty. An Elder has an eye on him and would be very displeased if you don’t behave.” The reedy looking young man paled visibly at the mention of an elder and hurriedly nodded his head. The judge then said, “Both of you juniors, move to the edge of the ring and … Start!”
The ring was around 100 m in diameter, and as soon as the judge gave the signal, Fang Hao rushed towards the inner disciple, readying the sledgehammer for a solid whack. The Qi Condensation Inner Disciple hurriedly performed double-handed gestures casting a spell. By the time Fang Hao had reached halfway, a two finger wide and half a meter long snake made of flames shot from the Inner Disciple. Fang Hao had built up huge momentum in his dash, and had difficulty dodging the spell completely.
The spell was aimed at his chest, but he managed to veer to the side and the spell brushed against his arm. His robes sizzled and he felt as if scalding hot water was poured on his arm. He clenched his teeth and charged forward. The inner disciple was immediately casting another spell with double handed hand gestures and a low chant. Within half a breath a translucent spherical shield had appeared surrounding him. ‘Fuck! That inner disciple used some sort of barrier! Hope I can smash it apart before he can cast another of those fire snakes.’ thought Fang Hao.
Before the inner disciple could complete his third spell, Fang Hao had managed to reach the inner disciple. Using the momentum of his charge he swung the hammer sideways, smashing the barrier with all his might. The barrier shuddered, and multiple cracks appeared on it, and it looked very similar to shattered class. Seeing this, the inner disciple was alarmed, but maintained his cool as he finished casting his spell. A fire snake appeared and rushed as swift as an arrow towards Fang Hao, who judged that it was impossible to dodge in time. He swung his sledgehammer again as the fire snake smashed his chest.

Fang Hao felt as if hot coals were thrown at his chest, his robes burned away in a flash and the fire snake collided with his chest and dissipated. Despite the pain, Fang Hao completed his sledgehammer swing, successfully shattering the barrier. The inner disciple had a look of panic on his face as he warily glanced at the sledge hammer. He hastily continued casting his fourth spell taking advantage of the fact that the fire snake’s impact had pushed back Fang Hao by a couple of steps.
Still, he was shocked to see that the fire snake hadn’t managed to burn away even that fatty’s skin! All his last spell had done was give the fatty an ugly reddish burn on his chest. ‘Damn that fatty! That was my most powerful offensive spell at full power…and it just looks like some boiling water was poured on his chest. I have to finish him quick, or I will have no face left!’ Fang Hao was experiencing a significant amount of pain. ‘Ouch Ouch Ouch, it burns. Well I am going to fuck you up you arrogant prick!’ he had an ugly expression on his face as he swung his sledgehammer with full force. The inner disciple was smashed with the sledgehammer before he could complete his next spell. Audible sounds of crunching were heard, as the inner disciple no doubt suffered multiple fractures and he shifted a few steps sideways from the impact.
His spell casting was disrupted as Fang Hao had a menacing stare and readied his sledgehammer again. The inner disciple had an ugly look on his face as he immediately said, “I admit Defeat!” Fang Hao stopped his sledgehammer mid swing, dropped it and cupped his hands to the inner disciple as he said, “Many thanks for letting this junior win, senior!” Fang Hao was no fool. He wouldn’t dare to mock his opponent too much and leave him with no face. His opponent was an inner disciple after all. ‘Better leave him some face and not do my usual Lord trolling. He is an inner disciple after all.’
The inner disciple understood Fang Hao’s intentions and nodded amicably while suppressing his groans of pain as he quickly retreated from the ring. He was afraid that he would scream in agony if he uttered a single syllable.

Moonshot
Gregarious businessman Evin Tumble is fascinated by the sudden and inexplicable appearance of a low-orbiting moon. Specifically, he's interested in shooting it down with a giant cannon. The moon is only about eight miles overhead, but it's high enough and quick enough that nobody can reach it by balloon or airship. He hires our protagonists: taciturn Iseult Morrin, cheerful Sean Whelan, and nervous Íde Ceallaigh, to help him with his obsession. As our heroes are dispersed across the continent to perform tasks for Tumble, and the moon-hunt draws closer, they become increasingly suspicious of their benefactor's motives and true nature. Moonshot is a story centred around struggling with confidence, the difficulty of being an immigrant, and the duality of truth, all clad in the trappings of an urban fantasy. It is character-driven, from the heart, and based on tropes and ideas that are missing from a lot of contemporary fantasy (a push beyond the flawless-yet-somehow-still-needs-rescuing-by-an-oafish-man heroine trope, a touch of cosmic magic based on the shared geometries of Celtic and Arab art).
