《War of Divinities》Chapter 9 - Boss

The surviving humans lined up. Men and women stood shoulder to shoulder with backs straight, their faces stoic and weapons ready. This was it, the final wave.
Everyone's levels had improved significantly. Their bodies transformed, and muscles and bones strengthened. The increased attributes allowed even the oldest to wield a sword or spear easily. Yet these gains had not been without cost. Over one-third of the original 250 people who came through the portal had perished from the last four waves—a painful loss of life. Everyone knew death could be just a moment away. However, they held firm. Just one more wave to go.
Joe did a final inspection of his sword. It had held up relatively well. A few nicks and scratches, but the edge remained sharp. He had also picked up a shield and pair of grieves for this last battle to add extra protection. The dead had no need for worldly possessions, and everyone needed whatever advantage they could get. Even the squeamish quickly dropped any ethical concerns to pick up an extra weapon or piece of armor for the final battle. Eventually, all valuable items and artifacts of the deceased were disseminated amongst the crowd, providing everyone with an additional layer of defense.
With only a minute to go before the final wave started, Joe closed his eyes, taking in the final moments of peace. His eyes and mouth stung from the air tainted with the smell of death and decay. The once verdant fields had been transformed into a hellscape. Blood seemed to flow endlessly across the landscape until eventually collecting in pits where large explosions had marred the Earth. Bodies of the dead littered the ground, goblins and humans alike, many with eyes frozen in horror and fear. The mass of goblin corpses was already beginning to rot under the bright sun.
Once this was over, they would have to give their fallen a proper burial. None deserved to be buried in a place like this. Joe didn't know these people. Who had they been back on Earth before the Tower? What dreams and aspirations did they have? Were they good people? In a sense, it didn't matter. Today they were comrades who stood side by side in the face of adversity. Perhaps this is what the heavens wanted. To forge a sense of camaraderie or instill a sense of loyalty so that they would be better soldiers? Joe couldn't help but ponder while looking up at the perfectly blue sky. The midday sun had only begun its descent to the west, which meant barely two hours had passed since they first arrived, yet they had already seen enough death to last a lifetime. Joe wondered what the next floor held. However, such thoughts would have to wait for the chimes of bells rang out through the valley. The fifth and final wave had arrived.
'Ding' 'fourth wave is complete. Final wave commencing.'
As the chimes ended, everyone froze, waiting in anticipation for what was to come. Suddenly, the air shimmered, and a beam of light descended from the heavens. The amount of light was denser than any wave before, with all the energy concentrated on a single location, making everyone shift in position while gripping their weapons. This wave was going to be different.
Eventually, the light dissipated, unveiling a gigantic being of green muscle and mass. It stood 10ft tall with arms and legs as wide as a man's torso. It wore basic rags for clothes and a club of solid stone for a weapon. It looked up and roared at the heavens. The sound was deep and primal. It reverberated across the zone, causing many to shake in fear. Only those with high Will could stand their ground with stoic looks. Ready to face a monster well above them in the food chain.

'Was this thing a goblin?' Joe's question was soon answered as one support team member shouted, "It's a level 10 Goblin Ogre!" The realization shocked everyone in the crowd. To think they would have to fight something so strong on the first floor. Even the elites were likely level 7 at most. He looked over at the speaker. The guy wore glasses and a long coat covered in Sigils, he was in his mid-20s, and his eyes shone with a blue hue. This guy must have purchased the [Inspect] skill or something similar from the store.
The man's proclamation caused the Ogre to look down. It sniffed the air before shifting its attention to the line of humans in front of it. With its prey found, it smacked its chest and roared again. It hefted its club and leaped across the muddy field in large bounds.
Shouts went out, and the long-range skill users launched a torrent of attacks at the Ogre. Fire, lightning, ice, empowered arrows, and arcane orbs fell around the creature with enough firepower to wipe out a small company of soldiers. However, any hope of a quick victory soon evaporated. The Ogre shrugged off attacks like they were pinpricks. Nothing seemed to slow its charge, not even the muddy fields that caused it to sink up to its ankles.
"Summoners to the front," Adam yelled. Soon after, over fifteen summoners and their creatures stepped forward. Wolves, bears, tigers, elementals, and even a giant snake appeared. They charged the Ogre, crashing into it with ferocity as they clawed, bit, and burned the Ogre. The crowd roared out in cheers as the beasts did battle. Yet, the Ogre soon responded in kind. It grabbed many of the beasts and tore them limb from limb. Even the elementals became victims. The Ogres club was an unstoppable force as it crushed ice and stone. The fire and air elementals held out for longer, but they too fell after repeated blows. The summoners looked on in horror as their summoned beasts died. A few collapsed from the backlash.
"Groups 1 & 5 flanking maneuvers. Healers to the back to provide support. Squads 6 to 15. Hold the line. "The sudden order woke Joe from his stupor. Had he heard that right? If he remembered correctly, he was in squad 9, which put him and his team right in the cross hairs of the rampaging Ogre. Were they seriously expected to stay and fight that? He looked around, seeing the look of alarm on everyone's faces.
Joe looked at his team. Their faces were a mix of emotion once they realized they were to take the brunt of the attack. He wanted to tell his team to run. This monster was way out of their league. But before he could shout out, he felt a hand on his shoulder. He looked back and saw Smokey. His face was stoic yet determined as he smiled at Joe.
"Come on, kid. Someone has to give that ugly green mug a beating. Just be sure to stay behind me, alright."
"Wait… you can't. You'll die!" Joe blurted out.
"Haha. We all have to die sometime, am I right. Besides, you young kids still have your lives left to live. Let us old fogeys take the lead this time." Before Joe could respond, Smokey stepped out and lifted his Claymore over his shoulder. "Come on, lads, let's show them how it's done," he yelled while activating his [Great Bear Transformation] skill.
Smokey's confidence seeped through the crowd, persuading more and more squads to follow his lead. They rattled their spears and shields together while yelling out in defiance.

"Hoorah!"
Those with shields ran up to the front, followed by those with spears and swords behind. Everyone locked their weapons in place as they braced for the Ogre's arrival.
The Ogre seemed to laugh at the pitiful human resistance. It leaped forward, arriving against the first line of defense. Its club hung high in the air before it smashed it down into the first line of defenders. Sword and shield did little to prevent its onslaught. The Ogre's weapon crushed two shield-bearers into a paste before it deftly swung its club horizontally, causing another two fighters to be flung several feet away with shattered bones. A few long distant heals were launched by the healers in an attempt to save their lives, but it was too little too late. They were already dead.
The only shield users capable of holding on were those with the bronze tiered skills [Bronze Skin] or [Giants Strength]. [Bronze Skin] gave the user significantly firmer skin and organs, helping to increase their defensive capabilities, while [Giants Strength] gave a percentage boost to the user's strength stat. Those with the bronze skin skill could be identified by their metallic shine as they hefted their shields to block several of the Ogre's blows. However, even they began to struggle as blood seeped from their mouths. The power behind each swing battered their bodies like a boxer punching a child.
Suddenly, golden arrows and ethereal swords of light appeared in the sky like a torrent of rain. Silver-tiered skills launched by the stronger squads rained down on the Ogre from the side, dealing powerful blows that pierced several inches into its skin. However, the sight of its own blood only caused the Ogre to enter a mad frenzy.
The monster roared out while swinging its club wildly in abandon. No longer choosing to play with its food, it broke through the first line, killing several fighters and turning them into mangled pieces of flesh and bone. Those equipped with the [Shockwaves] skill attempted to hold the beast back, bombarding the Ogre with several concussive blasts, making it stumble.
However, panic had already begun to seep through the ranks as despair gripped people's hearts. Joe stood in the second line as the woman next to him dropped her shield and started to cry in fear. Others shook in place while a few dropped their weapons in an attempt to flee. Moral began to crumble as conviction and hope were now replaced with dread.
Just when the ranks were about to collapse, Smokey charged in with a roar. His [Great Bear Transformation] made him look like a half-man, half grizzly giant as he held his Claymore high, launching a violent swing that cut through the Ogre's thigh, causing it to roar in pain. Those around him took strength from his action, jumping in and launching all their skills with abandon. New wounds began to appear on the Ogre, forcing it to take another step back. However, the Ogre refused to remain passive. It responded by continuing to swing its club violently. Each blow caused another fighter to be crushed to death, only for more to jump in and take their place.
***
Smokey had never considered himself brave or heroic. Yet, somehow he found himself tearing into a 10ft Ogre like he was chopping wood. If only his late wife could see him now. She always did love a hero.
Being so close to the monster, he couldn't help but notice the smell. The vile beast stank worse than a dumpster pit of rotten meat. Yet its strength was no joke. If this thing broke through, it would be pandemonium. He couldn't let that happen.
Smokey clutched his Claymore and, along with a few other brave fighters, lunged at the Ogre again. Its skin was thick and coarse, but the combined might behind his two skills meant his strikes tore effortlessly through its defense, cutting into bone. The Ogre roared in agony, and in a fit of rage, it lifted its club and swung down in an attempt to smite those that had hurt it. Smokey pulled away just in time, but a spearman to his right wasn't so lucky. A single hit obliterated his skull, resulting in an explosion of blood and brain matter.
Smokey jumped in again to deliver another strike while the Ogre was distracted. The sooner the beast was taken down, the better. People were now attacking the monster from all angles, but Smokey continued to attack from the front, keeping its attention on himself. He again targeted its thigh, leaving another deep gash that would hopefully limit its maneuverability.
The Ogre responded with a downward swing with its club. With no time to evade, Smokey bent his knees and prepared to receive the attack. The Ogre's club slammed against his sword with enough power to rend metal. Smokey gritted his teeth as the force behind the blow caused every bone in his body to shudder. The Ogre had to have double his strength to unleash such a strike. He pushed more energy into his skill Sigil, drawing out as much power as possible. There were only a few minutes left in his transformation state, and he had to make every second count.
Smokey pushed the Ogre's club to the side, and with all his weight, he charged and thrust his Claymore into the Ogre's chest, piercing several inches into its ribcage. The Ogre screamed in outrage. Unbelieving that such weak prey could hurt it. It dropped its club and began using its fists to smash down again against the little bug. Yet even after multiple hits, the bug continued to drive its pointy stick into its chest.
Blood began dripping down Smokeys mouth. He was sure half the bones in his upper body were broken by now. Not even the long-distance healing spells could fix this amount of damage. The Ogre finally got tired of smashing and grabbed him in irritation. He tried to free himself from the monster's grip, but his broken body refused to respond. The Ogre squeezed him, causing him to yell in agony as his bones strained under pressure.
'So this is how it's going to end?' he mused with bitter resignation.
Smokey coughed out a mouthful of blood, but he refused to go down without one last attack. He pulled out a backup blade and hurled it into the Ogre's face with everything he had. The edge shot through the air like a bullet, piercing the Ogre's eye, causing it to explode in a downpour of blood. The monster screamed in pain and retaliated by smashing Smokey's body into the ground in revenge and battering his body with its giant foot. Only once it finished venting its anger did it chuck Smokey's battered body away before letting out a guttural roar of victory. The remains of Smokey's body left no doubt. He was dead.

Joe gritted his teeth in anguish over his friend's death. Smokey had been the one he was closest to since his arrival in the Tower. The old man had looked out for him since the start, and his death left a weight on his heart he hadn't expected. Smokey was a hero, and heroes always seemed to die first. Joe had tried to reach the fight before the beast landed the final blow, but he was too far away, slow, and weak. He now could only watch in horror at the outcome.
Without Smokey to take the brunt of the attacks, the line collapsed. People dropped their weapons and ran for their lives. Who wanted to face an overwhelmingly strong enemy that a force of over 150 people was struggling to take down? Once the defensive line broke, the creature tore through the remaining ranks unhindered, making its way toward Joe and the rest of the squad.
Joe looked at his remaining teammates. Some had already run, refusing to take on such a calamity. In a way, they were the smart ones. Others held their ground, either too scared to move or resigned to their fate. He looked over to Jones, the man's [Summon Elemental] skill had been obliterated earlier, yet he stood his ground and summoned an elemental of pure fire with the last of his strength. Jones and Joe nodded to each other in recognition. This would be their last stand.
With a final hoorah, Joe and the others charged into the Ogre with everything they had. Joe held his long sword tightly in one hand and shield in the other and lunged with all his might toward the Ogre. Yet he hadn't even made it a few feet before the Ogres club swung across to meet him. Time seemed to slow down as Joe saw his inevitable demise. The club whistled through the air with impetus and Joe knew that there was nothing he could do to avoid the attack, even after increasing his level and stats. [Swords Mastery] caused his senses to buzz at the oncoming danger. Joe did his best to reorientate his body and lift his shield to absorb the damage, hoping it would be enough. It was not.
The club smashed into him with the force of a freight train. One bone after another broke, and he was sent flying over 20 feet away. He crashed and rolled across the muddy ground until finally stopping near a ditch. With his body broken, Joe wanted to scream out loud in pain, but nothing came out. Pieces of flesh and body parts barely clung together. He coughed blood, attempting to move, but it was no use. His body was unresponsive. The only condolence was that he had landed on his side with his eyes facing the Ogre. His sight began to go hazy, but he mustered all his willpower to watch the rest of the battle.
The remaining fighters who chose to stand continued attacking the Ogre. Each wore the monster down a little more after each attack. He looked on as comrades and friends he had fought with were ripped apart. Jones, Chris, and others fell under Ogre's might. Joe wanted to cry out, but it was no use. He could feel his eyes were becoming heavy. A sense of tiredness hit him, encouraging him to enter eternal rest. But he held on, searching the battle for the other groups. Where were Adam and the elites? He scanned the area until he found them. The others had split up and surrounded the monster, choosing to remain back and launch attacks from a distance.
Why weren't they helping? His answer only came a few minutes later once the Ogre no longer had the strength to chase after its prey. At that moment, the remaining squads charged toward the now weakened Ogre. The monster screamed as a barrage of powerful skills piled on. Having accumulated so much damage, the Ogre's fate was sealed. Finally, a giant halberd thrown by Adam himself took the monster down. Its blade ripped into the Ogre's neck, causing it to collapse on the blood-soaked ground.
Joe lay there in the ditch while his vision went hazy and his bodily organs failed. His last emotions were anger and sadness as a sense of clarity washed over him. It was all so clear. They had all been used as sacrificial pawns to help weaken the enemy. Just so the others could jump in and mop up the exp without risking death. "This debt will be repaid. I swear!" was his last thought before darkness finally embraced him.

Only Villains Do That
While waiting on an Akihabara train platform one day, ordinary high schooler Yoshi Shinonome was suddenly plucked from his normal life in Japan and whisked away by a beautiful goddess to Ephemera, a world of magic and adventure, to serve as her Hero and drive back the evil Dark Lord. This is not his story. Standing nearby at the moment Yoshi was isekai'd was a man named Seiji - a rude, cranky, misanthropic musician who was not at all pleased to find himself also snatched up and transported to Ephemera by the goddess's wicked sister, Virya. According to this self-proclaimed Goddess of Evil, the whole fantasy adventure thing was a game she and her sister played to stave off the boredom of immortality, and since the good goddess, Sanora, had picked her Hero...well, Virya needed a Dark Lord. A grown man with his own career and ambitions, Seiji has no interest in playing. Unfortunately for him, the call to adventure was not a request. Now, he must conquer Ephemera and defeat the Hero...or Virya promises to make him beg for the release of death before granting it. Playing along for his own survival, Seiji nonetheless is under no illusions who his true enemy is, and it's not the naive young would-be Hero from his own world. Placed in an impossible position, Seiji must make enough progress toward world domination to keep his sadistic patron goddess off his back, but not so much that he can't strike an accord with the forces of Good and convince the Hero Yoshi that it's the goddesses who are their mutual enemy. Forced to embrace Evil without being too evil, Seiji walks the razor's edge, building his forces and biding his time till he can get revenge on the goddesses and be free of them, his only certainty that he will not be getting out of this with his hands clean. A Dark Lord's gotta do what a Dark Lord's gotta do. Updates Tuesday and Friday. Most Patreon tiers get to read one chapter in advance of the public release!
